The mitochondrion which contains its own double-stranded circular DNA is a semi-independent organelle that plays critical roles in cell activity. Mitochondrial DNA （mtDNA） is maternally inherited through several mechanisms that have been proposed （Luo et al., 2013） and, if mitochondrial mutations are inherited to the offspring, it is possible to cause mitochondrial diseases such as neuropathy, cardiomyopathy, myopathy, and liver failure.

Today’ s optical neuromodulation techniques are rapidly evolving,benefiting from advances in photonics,genetics and materials science.In this review,we provide an up-to-date overview of the latest optical approaches for neuromodulation.We begin with the physical principles and constraints underlying the interaction between light and neural tissue.We then present advances in optical neurotechnologies in seven modules:conventional optical fibers,multifunctional fibers,optical waveguides,light-emitting diodes,upconversion nanoparticles,optical neuromodulation based on the secondary effects of light,and unconventional light sources facilitated by ultrasound and magnetic fields.We conclude our review with an outlo ok on new methods and mechanisms that afford optical neuromodulation with minimal invasiveness and footprint.

Flexible shape-memory polymers were synthesized by Pickering high internal phase emulsion(HIPE)polymerization and used to adsorb and separate tetrodotoxin(TTX)from an aqueous solution.SiO_(2)nanoparticles were used to stabilize the Pickering oil-in-water(O/W)HIPEs.We introduced imidazolium-modified bromobutyl rubber(IBR)with excellent mechanical properties and high viscosity into the emulsion system as the shape-memory monomer.The properties,such as shape memory and morphology,were characterized by various methods,and batches of static adsorption experiments were conducted to analyze the adsorption performance of SiO_(2)@IBR on TTX.The characterization revealed that the SiO_(2)@IBR had a porous structure and good shape memory.Thus,the combination of SiO_(2)particles and IBR prevented shedding of SiO_(2)and enhanced the mechanical and adsorption properties of SiO_(2)@IBR.The results of the adsorption experiments indicated that the SiO_(2)@IBR had good adsorption of TTX.Both the Langmuir and Freundlich models fitted the isothermal adsorption experiment process.The TTX adsorption capacity of SiO_(2)@IBR was about 290.44 mg/g at 308 K.The fitting results of the pseudo-first-order and pseudosecond-order kinetic models showed that the adsorption process involved both chemical bonding and physical adsorption.After 10 adsorption and desorption experiments,the adsorption capacity of SiO_(2)@IBR decreased less than 0.03%,indicating that it had good adsorption and regeneration performance.

Objective: Small ubiquitin-related modifiers (SUMOs) are a group of post-translational modification proteins extensively expressed in eukaryotes. Abnormal SUMOylation can lead to the development of various diseases. This article summarizes the progress on research of the role of SUMOs in various types of kidney diseases to further increase the understanding of the regulatory functions of SUMOylation in the pathogenesis of kidney diseases. Data sources: This review was based on articles published in the PubMed databases up to January 2018, using the keywords including "SUMOs," "SUMOylation," and "kidney diseases." Study selection: Original articles and critical reviews about SUMOs and kidney disease were selected for this review. A total of 50 studies were in English. Results: SUMO participates in the activation of NF-κB inflammatory signaling pathway, playing a central regulatory role in the inflammation and progression of DN, and the secretion of various chemokines in AKI. SUMO involves in the regulation of TG2 and Nrf2 antioxidant stress, affecting renal tubular injury in AKI. SUMO affects the MAPK/ERK pathway, regulating intracellular signal transduction, modulating the transcription and expression of effector molecules in DN. SUMO contributes to the TGF-β/Smad pathway, leading to fibrosis of the kidney. The conjugate combination of SUMO and p53 regulates cell proliferation and apoptosis, and participates in the regulation of tumorigenesis. In addition, SUMOylation of MITF modulates renal tumors secondary to melanoma, Similarly, SUMOylation of tumor suppressor gene VHL regulates the occurrence of renal cell carcinoma in VHL syndrome. Conclusions: Tissue injury, inflammatory responses, fibrosis, apoptosis, and tumor proliferation in kidney diseases all involve SUMOs. Further research of the substrate SUMOylation and regulatory mechanisms of SUMO in kidney diseases will improve and develop new treatment measures and strategies targeting kidney diseases.

One of the main causes of pregnancy failure and fetus abortion is oocyte aneuploidy,which is increased with maternal aging.Numerous possible causes of oocyte aneuploidy in aged women have been proposed,including cross-over formation defect,cohesin loss,spindle deformation,spindle assembly checkpoint malfunction,microtubule-kinetochore attachment failure,kinetochore mis-orientation,mitochondria dysfunction-induced increases in reactive oxygen species,protein over-acetylation,and DNA damage.However,it still needs to be answered if these aneuploidization factors have inherent relations,and how to prevent chromosome aneuploidy in aged oocytes.Epidemiologically,oocyte aneuploidy has been found to be weakly associated with higher homocysteine concentrations,obesity,ionizing radiation and even seasonality.In this review,we summarize the research progress and present an integrated view of oocyte aneuploidization.

Background The Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor(GECAM)is primarily designed to spot gamma-ray bursts corresponding to gravitational waves.In order to achieve stable observations from various astronomical phenomena,the payload performance need to be monitored during the in-orbit operation.Method This article describes the design and implementation of GECAM satellite payload performance monitoring(GPPM)software.The software extracts the payload status and telescope observations(light curves,energy spectrums,characteristic peak fitting of energy spectrums,etc)from the payload data.Considering the large amount of payload status parameters in the engineering data,we have designed a method of parameter processing based on the configuration tables.This method can deal with the frequent changes of the data formats and facilitate program maintenance.Payload status and performance are monitored through defined thresholds and monitoring reports.The entire software is implemented in python language and the huge amount of observation data is stored in MongoDB.Conclusion The design and implementation of GPPM software have been completed,tested with ground and in-orbit payload data.The software can monitor the performance of GECAM payload effectively.The overall design of the software and the data processing method can be applied to other satellites.

ABO blood type is associated with endometrial cancer risk in Chinese women

ABO blood type has been associated with risk of several malignancies. However, results are not consistent. In this population-based case-control study including 1204 incident endometrial cancer cases and 1212 population controls, we examined the association of self-reported serologic blood type with endometrial cancer risk using a logistic regression model. Women with endometrial cancer were more likely to have blood type A. Compared to women with blood type O, the adjusted odds ratios for endometrial cancer were 1.00 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.79-1.28] for type B, 1.24 (95% CI, 0.90-1.69) for type AB, and 1.50 (95% CI, 1.19-1.90) for type A. A significant dose-response relationship was observed for cancer risk and level of antigen A (P for trend = 0.0003). The positive association of blood type A with cancer risk was observed regardless of menopausal status, body mass index, oral contraceptive use, or family cancer history. our results suggest that ABO blood type may be involved in the development of endometrial cancer.

BACKGRouND Computed tomography(CT)has become a routine preoperative examination for tibial plateau fractures(TPFs).Assessing the location of the fragment and intercondylar eminence fracture can provide clinicians with valuable information;however,the evaluation of traumatic meniscal lesion(TML)and arthroscopic management are controversial.AIM To predict TML by three-dimensional skeletal anatomy changes in unilateral TPF and bilateral TPF on preoperative thin layer CT.METHODS Acute fracture of tibial plateau patients undergoing arthroscopic surgery between December 2017 and December 2019 were included in this retrospective study.The type,zone,and location of TMLs were diagnosed based on the operation records and/or arthroscopic videos.Measurement of three-dimensional fracture morphology included the following:Frontal fragment width of plateau,sagittal fragment subsiding distance(FSD),sagittal fracture line distance,sagittal posterior tibial slope,and transversal area ratio of fragment area)on preoperative CT three-dimensional plane.The correlation of TML with skeletal values was calculated according to unicondylar TPFs and bicondylar TPFs.RESULTS A total of 67 patients were enrolled in this study,among which 30 patients had TMLs,lateral/medial(23/7).FSD was a particularly positive factor to predict TML,with odds ratio of 2.31(1.26-5.63).On sagittal view of CT,FSD degree of 8 mm and posterior tibial slope exceeding 11.74°implied enhanced risk of TML in bicondylar TPFs.On coronal view,once fragment width of plateau surpassed 3 cm,incidence of TML reached 100%.On transverse view,area ratio of fragment as enhanced risk of 5.5%and FSD>4.3 mm for predicting TML were observed in unicondylar TPFs.CONCLUSION TML can be predicted by different parameters on preoperative CT views according to unicondylar fractures and bicondylar TPFs.
