Voluntary running delays primary degeneration in rat retinas after partial optic nerve transection

Running is believed to be beneficial for human health. Many studies have focused on the neuroprotective effects of voluntary running on animal models. There were both primary and secondary degeneration in neurodegenerative diseases, including glaucoma. However, whether running can delay primary or secondary degeneration or both of them was not clear. Partial optic nerve transection model is a valuable glaucoma model for studying both primary and secondary degeneration because it can separate primary(mainly in the superior retina) from secondary(mainly in the inferior retina) degeneration. Therefore, we compared the survival of retinal ganglion cells between Sprague-Dawley rat runners and non-runners both in the superior and inferior retinas. Excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and apoptosis are involved in the degeneration of retinal ganglion cells in glaucoma. So we also used western immunoblotting to compare the expression of some proteins involved in apoptosis(phospho-c-Jun N-terminal kinases, p-JNKs), oxidative stress(manganese superoxide dismutase, MnSOD) and excitotoxicity(glutamine synthetase) between runners and non-runners after partial optic nerve transection. Results showed that voluntary running delayed the death of retinal ganglion cells vulnerable to primary degeneration but not those to secondary degeneration. In addition, voluntary running decreased the expression of glutamine synthetase, but not the expression of p-JNKs and MnSOD in the superior retina after partial optic nerve transection. These results illustrated that primary degeneration of retinal ganglion cells might be mainly related with excitotoxicity rather than oxidative stress; and the voluntary running could down-regulate excitotoxicity to delay the primary degeneration of retinal ganglion cells after partial optic nerve transection.

2195 Al-li alloy was deformed through extrusion followed by *** textures of the extruded plate and cold-rolled sheet after solutionization were *** longitudinal strength and precipitates after T8 aging were measured and observed,*** to those in the sheet,T1(Al2 Cu li)precipitates in the extruded plate after T8 aging are non-uniform,and their incubation time is *** extruded plate after solutionization is not recrystallized and contains 55.28%deformation textures of Brass and *** the cold-rolled sheet after solutionization,massive recrystallization occurs and S component *** to the higher fraction of Brass and S textures with higher Schmid factor and lower equivalent sliding system number,the extruded plate possesses an yield strength not higher or even lower,but a tensile strength higher,than the cold-rolled sheet after *** addition,during the aging after pre-stretch,these textures promote T1 precipitation on preferred sliding planes of cold-rolled sheet and cause its higher yield strength and tensile strength after T8 aging.

System Size Resonance Associated with Canard Phenomenon in a Biological Cell System

The influence of internal noise on the calcium oscillations is studied. It is found that stochastic calcium oscillations occur when the internal noise is considered, while the corresponding deterministic dynamics only yields a steady state. Also,. the performance of such oscillations shows two maxima with the variation of the system size, indicating the occurrence of system size resonance. This behavior is found to be intimately connected with the canard phenomenon. Interestingly, it is also found that one of the optimal system sizes matches well with the real cell size, and such a match is robust to the variation of the control parameters.

In this paper, flow behavior and topology structure in a highly loaded compressor cascade with and without plasma aerodynamic actuation （PAA） are investigated. Streamline pattern, total pressure loss coefficient, outlet flow angle and topological analysis are considered to study the effect and mechanism of the plasma flow control on corner separation. Results presented include the boundary layer flow behavior, effects of three types of PAA on separated flows and performance parameters, topology structures and sequences of singular points with and without PAA. Two separation lines, reversed flow and backflow exist on the suction surface. The cross flow on the endwall is an important element for the comer separation. PAA can reduce the undertuming and overturning as well as the total pressure loss, leading to an overall increase of flow turning and enhancement of aerodynamic performance. PAA can change the topology structure, sequences of singular points and their corresponding separation lines. Types II and III PAA are much more efficient in controlling comer separation and enhancing aerodynamic performances than type I.

The microstructure evolution of Al-Cu-li-Mn-Zr-Ti alloy during homogenization was investigated by optical microscopy （OM）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry （EDX）, and differential scanning calorimeter （DSC） methods. The results show that severe dendritic segregation exists in the experimental alloy ingot. Numerous eutectic phases can be observed in the grain boundary, and the distribution of the main elements along the interdendritic region varies periodically. The main secondary phase is Al2Cu. The overburnt temperature of the alloy is 520 °C. The second phases are gradually dissolved into the matrix, and the grain boundaries become spare and thin during homogenization with increasing temperature or prolonging holding time. Homogenization can be described by a constitutive equation in exponential function. The suitable homogenization treatment for the alloy is （510 °C, 18 h）, which agrees well with the results of homogenization kinetic analysis.

Secondary degeneration occurs commonly in the central nervous system after traumatic injuries and following acute and chronic diseases, including glaucoma. A constellation of mechanisms have been shown to be associated with secondary degeneration including apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, derangements in ionic homeostasis and calcium influx. Glial cells, such as microglia, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, have also been demon- strated to take part in the process of secondary injury. Partial optic nerve transection is a useful model which was established about 13 years ago. The merit of this model compared with other optic nerve injury models used for glaucoma study, including complete optic nerve transection model and optic nerve crush model, is the possibility to separate primary degeneration from secondary degeneration in location. Therefore, it provides a good tool for the study of secondary degeneration. This review will focus on the research progress of the mechanisms of secondary degeneration using partial optic nerve transection model.

Grain refinement mechanism of as-cast aluminum by hafnium

The effect of Hf on the grain refinement of as-cast aluminum was investigated using optical microscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The result shows that the grain size of studied alloy decreases effectively with the addition of Hf,Hf can react with Al to form Al3Hf particles during the solidification, the primary Al3Hf particles are highly potent nucleants for Al and the nanoscale coherent Al3Hf particles can inhibit the grain growth by pinning effect. The grain refinement mechanism of studied alloys was verified by the solute theory and the crystallography study, and it can be divided into two distinct types: At low Hf contents, there are no primary Al3Hf phases to form, the acquired grain refinement is primarily attributed to the constitutional undercooling induced by the Hf solute. At medium and high Hf contents, both Hf solute and Al3Hf particles contribute to the refinement.

Thrombophilia denotes a condition,whether acquired or hereditary,characterized by increased susceptibility to hypercoagulation.[1]This condition was first described in 1965,coinciding with the discovery of an inherited predisposition to venous thromboembolism(VTE)in patients deficient in antithrombin III.[2]While arterial and venous thromboses are common in hospitalized patients,acute myocardial infarction(AMI)and pulmonary embolism(PE)stand out as ***,theoccurrenceof AMI complicated by PE is exceedingly rare,especially when considering cases where paradoxical embolism originating from a patent foramen ovale is *** report presents a case of AMI complicated with PE.A comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of this rare yet critical condition is important for ensuring prompt diagnosis and treatment.
