Nutrient transport following water transfer through the world's largest water diversion channel

Nutrient levels in the artificial channel constructed for the Middle Route Project are significant indicators of water quality safety and aquatic ecological integrity for this large,interbasin scheme.However,the distribution and transport of nutrients along the channel were poorly understood.Based on a time-series dataset as well as mass balance and material flow analysis methods,the water and nutrient transport fluxes in the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project were identified in this study.The results indicate that the nutrient concentrations varied considerably with time,but there was no significant difference among the 30 stations of the main channel.Seasonal temperature difference was the major factor in the large fluctuations of water quality indicators over time.The nutrient loadings varied with the water volume outputs from the main channel to the waterreceiving cities.Atmospheric deposition was an important source of nutrients in the main channel,accounting for 9.13%,20.6%,and 0.635%of the nitrogen,phosphorus,and sulfur input from the Danjiangkou Reservoir,respectively.In 2021,a net accumulation of 988 tons of N,29 tons of P,and 2,540 tons of S,respectively,were present in the main channel.The increase of these external and internal nutrient loadings would cause water quality fluctuation and deterioration in some local sections of the main channel.Our study quantified the spatial and temporal patterns of nutrient transport in the Middle Route and revealed the ecological effects on the aquatic environment,assisting authorities on the project to develop effective water conservation strategies.

In Europe,population ageing poses a challenge.Given accelerating population ageing in Europe,longterm care(LTC)is a growing concern.Unmet healthcare needs varied among European countries during the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,and greater attention should be paid to ensuring that the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations are met.Notably,developing common and comparable indicators is useful for monitoring the LTC and healthcare of older adults at the national and international levels,and understanding the reasons for the differences in indicators between European countries could shed light on how to improve the health of older adults.

Transformation of nanoscale inclusions in 316L stainless steel processed by laser beam powder bed fusion during isothermal heating

Transformation mechanisms and reaction kinetics for formation of nanoscale inclusions in as-built 316L stainless steel produced by laser beam powder bed fusion(LB-PBF)during subsequent isothermal heating process were investigated and clarified experimentally and theoretically.The resulting changes in morphologies,size distributions,number densities,and chemical compositions of the inclusions were measured and discussed,along with microstructure and texture of the steel.The results showed that with increasing isothermal heating time and temperature,the columnar grains in the as-built LB-PBF 316L stainless steel transformed into equiaxed grains,which grew gradually and exhibited a large number of twins in the FCC structure.During isothermal heating,the reaction of Si in the steel with MnO–Cr_(2)O_(3)in the nanoscale inclusion resulted in a transformation from the homogeneous oxide MnO–SiO_(2)–Cr_(2)O_(3)to an inclusion with an obvious core–shell structure,and the core part was eventually rich in Si and the shell part was predominantly rich in Mn and Si,depending on the heating temperature and time.An Ostwald ripening model used for predicting the growth of nanoscale inclusions during isothermal heating verified that the observed effects of isothermal heating time and temperature were predicted for Si diffusion control.

Environmental exposure to perchlorate,nitrate,and thiocyanate in relation to chronic kidney disease in the general US population,NHANES 2005-2016

Background:Few studies have explored the impact of perchlorate,nitrate,and thiocyanate(PNT)on kidney function.This study aimed to evaluate the association of urinary levels of PNT with renal function as well as the prevalence of chronic kidney disease(CKD)among the general population in the United States.Methods:This analysis included data from 13,373 adults(≥20 years)from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2016.We used multivariable linear and logistic regression,to explore the associations of urinary PNT with kidney function.Restricted cubic splines were used to assess the potentially non-linear relationships between PNT exposure and outcomes.Results:After traditional creatinine adjustment,perchlorate(P-traditional)was positively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)(adjustedβ:2.75;95%confidence interval[CI]:2.25 to 3.26;P<0.001),and negatively associated with urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio(ACR)(adjustedβ:-0.05;95%CI:-0.07 to-0.02;P=0.001)in adjusted models.After both traditional and covariate-adjusted creatinine adjustment,urinary nitrate and thiocyanate were positively associated with eGFR(all P values<0.05),and negatively associated with ACR(all P values<0.05);higher nitrate or thiocyanate was associated with a lower risk of CKD(all P values<0.001).Moreover,there were L-shaped non-linear associations between nitrate,thiocyanate,and outcomes.In the adjusted models,for quartiles of PNT,statistically significant dose-response associations were observed in most relationships.Most results were consistent in the stratified and sensitivity analyses.Conclusions:Exposures to PNT might be associated with kidney function,indicating a potential beneficial effect of environmental PNT exposure(especially nitrate and thiocyanate)on the human kidney.

Bending and wave propagation analysis of axially functionally graded beams based on a reformulated strain gradient elasticity theory

A new size-dependent axially functionally graded(AFG) micro-beam model is established with the application of a reformulated strain gradient elasticity theory(RSGET). The new micro-beam model incorporates the strain gradient, velocity gradient,and couple stress effects, and accounts for the material variation along the axial direction of the two-component functionally graded beam. The governing equations and complete boundary conditions of the AFG beam are derived based on Hamilton's principle. The correctness of the current model is verified by comparing the static behavior results of the current model and the finite element model(FEM) at the micro-scale. The influence of material inhomogeneity and size effect on the static and dynamic responses of the AFG beam is studied. The numerical results show that the static and vibration responses predicted by the newly developed model are different from those based on the classical model at the micro-scale. The new model can be applied not only in the optimization of micro acoustic wave devices but also in the design of AFG micro-sensors and micro-actuators.

Evidence on the causes of the rising levels of COD_(Mn) along the middle route of the South-to-North Diversion Project in China:The role of algal dissolved organic matter

As the biggest inter-basin water transfer scheme in the world,the South-to-North Water Diversion Project(SNWD) was designed to alleviate the water crisis in North China.The main channel of the middle route of the SNWD is of great concern in terms of the drinking water quality.In this study,we tested the hypothesis that the dissolved organic matter(DOM) derived from the planktonic algae causes the rising levels of COD_(Mn) along the middle route by monitoring data on water quality(2015-2019,monthly resolution).The results showed that algal density in the main channel increased along the channel and was significantly correlated with COD_(Mn)(p <0.01).Five fluorescent components of DOM,including tyrosine-like(14.85%),tryptophan-like(22.48%),microbial byproduct-like(26.34%),fulvic acid-like(11.41%),and humic acid-like(24.92%) components,were detected.The level of tyrosine-like components increased along the channel and was significantly correlated with algal density(p<0.01),indicating that algae significantly changed the level of DOM in the channel.Algal decomposition and metabolism were found to be the main mechanisms that drive the changes in COD_(Mn).Therefore,controlling algal density would be an important measure to prevent further increase in CODMn and for the guarantee of excellent water quality.

Identification of an immune-related gene signature for predicting prognosis and immunotherapy efficacy in liver cancer via cell-cell communication

BACKGROUND Liver cancer is one of the deadliest malignant tumors worldwide.Immunotherapy has provided hope to patients with advanced liver cancer,but only a small fraction of patients benefit from this treatment due to individual differences.Identifying immune-related gene signatures in liver cancer patients not only aids physicians in cancer diagnosis but also offers personalized treatment strategies,thereby improving patient survival rates.Although several methods have been developed to predict the prognosis and immunotherapeutic efficacy in patients with liver cancer,the impact of cell-cell interactions in the tumor microenvir-onment has not been adequately considered.AIM To identify immune-related gene signals for predicting liver cancer prognosis and immunotherapy efficacy.METHODS Cell grouping and cell-cell communication analysis were performed on single-cell RNA-sequencing data to identify highly active cell groups in immune-related pathways.Highly active immune cells were identified by intersecting the highly active cell groups with B cells and T cells.The significantly differentially expressed genes between highly active immune cells and other cells were subsequently selected as features,and a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator(LASSO)regression model was constructed to screen for diagnostic-related features.Fourteen genes that were selected more than 5 times in 10 LASSO regression experiments were included in a multivariable Cox regression model.Finally,3 genes(stathmin 1,cofilin 1,and C-C chemokine ligand 5)significantly associated with survival were identified and used to construct an immune-related gene signature.RESULTS The immune-related gene signature composed of stathmin 1,cofilin 1,and C-C chemokine ligand 5 was identified through cell-cell communication.The effectiveness of the identified gene signature was validated based on experi-mental results of predictive immunotherapy response,tumor mutation burden analysis,immune cell infiltration analysis,survival analysis,and expression an

The deployment of millimeter-wave(mmWave)cellular systems in dense urban environments with an acceptable coverage and cost-efficient transmission scheme is essential for the rollout of fifth-generation and beyond technology.In this paper,cluster-based analysis of mmWave channel characteristics in two typical dense urban environments is performed.First,radio propagation measurement campaigns are conducted in two identified mmWave bands of 28 and 39 GHz in a central business district and a dense residential area.The customdesigned channel sounder supports high-efficiency directional scanning sounding,which helps collect sufficient data for statistical channel modeling.Next,using an improved auto-clustering algorithm,multipath clusters and their scattering sources are identified.An appropriate measure for inter-and intra-cluster characteristics is provided,which includes the cluster number,the Ricean K-factor,root-mean-squared(RMS)delay spread,RMS angular spread,and their correlations.Comparisons of these parameters across two mmWave bands for both line-of-sight(LoS)and non-light-of-sight(NLoS)links are given.To shed light on the blockage effects,detailed analysis of the propagation mechanisms corresponding to each NLoS cluster is provided,including reflection from exterior walls and diffraction over building corners and rooftops.Finally,the results show that the cluster-based analysis takes full advantage of mmWave beamspace channel characteristics and has further implications for the design and deployment of mmWave wireless networks.

Carboxypeptidase A6 Promotes the Proliferation and Migration of Hepatocellular Carcinoma by Up-regulating AKT Signaling Pathway

Summary:Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)has a poor treatment prognosis and high mortality worldwide.Understanding the molecular mechanism underlying HCC development would benefit the identification of diagnostic biomarkers and the improvement of the treatment strategies.The expression of carboxypeptidase A6(CPA6)has been reported in epilepsy and febrile seizures rather than in any type of cancers.However,the function of CPA6 expression in HCC is not yet understood.In this study,we aimed to investigate the clinicopathological significance of the expression of CPA6 in HCC and the underlying mechanisms.We observed that the expression of the CPA6 protein was increased significantly in HCC tissues than in paracancerous tissues.To explore its function in HCC,both gain-and loss-of-function studies demonstrated that CPA6 played a vital role in promoting HCC growth and metastasis.When knocking down CPA6 with shRNA,HCC cell proliferation and migration could be suppressed.Meanwhile,CPA6 overexpression could promote proliferation and migration of HLF cells.Moreover,CPA6 could activate AKT serine/threonine kinase(AKT)signaling pathway as confirmed by Western blotting.In conclusion,our study revealed that CPA6 could promote HCC cell proliferation and migration via AKT-mediated signaling pathway.These findings suggest that CPA6 is a promising diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target to improve the prognosis of HCC.
