AIM:To investigate the prevalence of gallstone dis-ease(GSD) and to evaluate the risk of symptomatic GSD among diabetic ***:The study was conducted by analyzing the National Health Research Institutes(NHRI) dataset of ambulatory care patients,inpatient claims,and the updated registry of beneficiaries from 2000 to 2008.A total of 615 532 diabetic patients without a prior history of hospital treatment or ambulatory care visits for symptomatic GSD were identified in the year ***-and gender-matched control individuals free from both GSD and diabetes from 1997 to 1999 were randomly selected from the NHIR database(n = 614 871).The incidence densities of symptomatic GSD were estimated according to the subjects' diabetic *** distributions of age,gender,occupation,income,and residential area urbanization were compared between diabetic patients and control subjects using Cox proportion hazards *** between the rates of selected comorbidities were also assessed in the two ***:Overall,60 734 diabetic patients and 48 116 control patients developed symptomatic GSD and underwent operations,resulting in cumulative operation rates of 9.87% and 7.83%,*** age and gender distributions of both groups were similar,with a mean age of 60 years and a predominance of *** diabetic group had a significantly higher prevalence of all comorbidities of interest.A higher incidence of symptomatic GSD was observed in females than in males in both *** the control group,females under the age of 64 had a significantly higher incidence of GSD than the corresponding males,but this difference was reduced with increasing *** cumulative incidences of operations for symptomatic GSD in the diabetic and control groups were 13.06 and 9.52 cases per 1000 person-years,*** men exhibited a higher incidence of operations for symptomatic GSD than did their counterparts in the control group(12.35 vs 8.75 cases per 1000 pe

Features of Ocean Surface Winds Observed by the QuikSCAT Satellite Before Tropical Cyclogenesis over the South China Sea

Ocean surface winds observed by the Quick Scatterometer(QuikSCAT) satellite prior to the geneses of 36 tropical cy-clones(TCs) in the South China Sea(SCS) are investigated in this paper. The results show that there are areas with negative mean horizontal divergence around the TC genesis locations three days prior to TC formation. The divergence term [-(f+ζ)(u/x+v/y) ] in the vorticity equation is calculated based upon the QuikSCAT ocean surface wind data. The calculated mean divergence term is about 10.3 times the mean relative vorticity increase rate around the TC genesis position one day prior to TC genesis,which shows the important contributions of the divergence term to the vorticity increase prior to TC formation. It is suggested that criteria related with the divergence and divergence term be applied in early detections of tropical cyclogenesis using the QuikSCAT satellite data.

Measurement of optical mirror with a small-aperture interferometer

In this paper, the principle of subaperture stitching interferometry was introduced. A testing stage with five degrees of freedom for stitching interferometry was built. A model based on least-squares method and error averaging method for data processing was estab- lished, which could reduce error accumulation and improve the precision. A 100ram plane mirror was measured with a 50mm aperture interferometer by means of stitching interferometry. Compared with the results by a 100 mm interferometer, peak to valley （PV） and root mean square （RMS） of the phase distribution residual are 0.00382 and 0.00042, respectively. It proved that the model and method are helpful for large optical measurement.

Significance increase in dengue cases have been recorded worldwide every year and South East Asian countries have been badly ***,antiviral drug to treat dengue is still not available but papaya leaves extract(PLE)have been successfully used in treating dengue *** in PLE is the major active compounds that contributes to the anti-thrombocytopenic activity(raising platelet count in patient’s blood).The PLE also contains polyphenols that contribute to antioxidant *** were carried out to extract and quantify carpaine from young leaves,old leaves and stalks of papaya *** crystalline powders were successfully purified and confirmed by ^(1)H and ^(13)C NMR(Nuclear Magnetic Resonance).Young papaya leaves recorded significantly higher amount of carpaine(Pdant capacity(AEAC)(R^(2)=0.9581).Both young and old leaves also showed significantly higher(P<0.05)DPPH scavenging activities as compared with the stalks in both unblended and blended *** papaya leaves were recommended as source of material to extract carpaine for future development of drug in dengue treatment.

Doxorubicin-loaded PLGA Microparticles with Internal Pores for Longacting Release in Pulmonary Tumor Inhalation Treatment

Doxorubicin（DOX） loaded poly（lactic-co-glycolic acid）（PLGA） microparticles with internal pores（MP-D） were developed for long-acting release in pulmonary inhalation treatment. The PLGA microparticles exhibited favorable aerodynamic properties for pulmonary delivery. In vitro drug release profile suggested that MP-D have the advantage of long-term maintenance of drug concentrations. MTT assay demonstrated the in vitro anti-tumor efficiency of the DOX loaded PLGA microparticles. Furthermore, melanoma lung metastasis model was established to determine the in vivo antitumor efficiency. The mice treated with MP-D showed significantly fewer lesions than the untreated ones. The survival analysis indicated that MP-D prolonged the survival time of tumor-bearing mice. These results suggested that DOX loaded PLGA microparticles with internal pores have the potential to be used as long-acting release carriers in clinical lung cancer treatment.

Stent thrombosis with different types of intracoronary stents: is it still a problem?

Objective The reported results of intracoronary stenting with Palmaz Schatz stents using the low dose anticoagulation protocol have been encouraging and no stent thrombosis was observed. The effectiveness of such method extending to the use of other types of stents was therefore evaluated in this study. Methods All patients followed the anticoagulation protocol (heparin and warfarin) using non heparin coated stents. From September 1995, 92 patients received intracoronary stenting (69 men, 23 women, mean age 60.9 years). Altogether 117 stents were implanted in 99 target arteries and 106 lesions. Results A total of 50.4% of the stents were bare stents (stents without protective sheaths). Both coil stents and slotted tubular stents were used. Stenting was performed without the guidance of intravascular ultrasonography and high pressure poststenting inflation was used in only 24.0% of patients with less than optimal angiographic results. The mean (±SD) coronary minimum luminal diameter changed from 0.63±0.39 mm to 3.12±0.48 mm immediately after stenting. Both stent thrombosis rate and femoral bleeding complication rate remained at 0%. Four bare stents could not be deployed in the first instance but without sequels. No morbidity nor mortality was recorded. The mean hospital stay remained at a mean of 4.5 days. All patients (100%) were followed up regularly. The mean (±SD) clinical follow up period was 229±173 days. Clinical symptoms improved in all patients. Conclusions These findings further support that the method is safe and stent thrombosis was not observed. Post stenting recoil was more with coil stents. Dislodgment and potential risk of embolization could not be underestimated with bare stents. The restenosis rate between different types of stents remains to be determined.

Differences between soybean genotypes in physiological response to sequential soil drying and rewetting

Soybean genotypes show diverse physiological responses to drought, but specific physiological traits that can be used to evaluate drought tolerance have not been identified. In the present study we investigated physiological traits of soybean genotypes under progressive soil drying and rewetting, using a treatment mimicking field *** a preliminary study with eight soybean genotypes, two drought-tolerant genotypes and one susceptible genotype were grown in the greenhouse and subjected to water restriction. Leaf expansion rate, gas exchange, water relation parameters, total chlorophyll(Chl), proline contents of leaves, and root xylem p H were monitored in a time course, and plant growth and root traits were measured at the end of the stress cycle. Drought-tolerant genotypes maintained higher leaf expansion rate, net photosynthetic rate(Pn), Chl content,instantaneous water use efficiency(WUEi), % relative water content(RWC), water potential(ψw), and turgor potential(ψp) during progressive soil drying and subsequent rewetting than the susceptible genotypes. By contrast, stomatal conductance(gs) and transpiration rate(Tr)of tolerant genotypes declined faster owing to dehydration and recovered more sharply after rehydration than the same parameters in susceptible ones. Water stress caused a significant increase in leaf proline level and root xylem sap p H of both genotypes but tolerant genotypes recovered to pre-stress levels more quickly after rehydration. Tolerant genotypes also produced longer roots with higher dry mass than susceptible genotypes. We conclude that rapid perception and adjustment in response to soil drying and rewetting as well as the maintenance of relatively high Pn, %RWC, and root growth constitute the mechanisms by which drought-tolerant soybean genotypes cope with water stress.

The hydrogen storage properties of Ti1.2Fe+xCa (x=1%, 3% and 5% in mass fraction) alloys was investigated. Results stow that the modified alloys can be activated without any thermal treatment at room temperature due to the addition of Ca and excess Ti in (lie alloys. Hydrogen storage properties of these modified alloys vary with Ca amount and reaction temperature. In addition, the influence mechanism of the addition of Ca and excessive Ti on the activation behavior and hydrogen storage capacity of the alloys was discussed.
