Background: In m.d-2022, a global m.ox (form.rly 'm.nkeypox') outbreak affecting predom.nantly gay and bisexual m.n em.rged in non-endem.c countries. Australia had never previously recorded m.ox cases and there was no prior research on knowledge or attitudes to m.ox am.ng gay and bisexual m.n across Australia. m.thods: We conducted a national, online cross-sectional survey between August 2022 and Septem.er 2022. Participants were recruited through com.unity organisation prom.tions, online advertising, and direct em.il invitations. Eligible participants were gay, bisexual or queer; identified as m.le (cisgender or transgender) or non-binary; aged 16 years or older; and lived in Australia. The m.in outcom. m.asures were: knowledge and concern about m.ox; recognition of m.ox sym.tom. and transm.ssion routes; vaccination history; acceptability of behavioural changes to reduce m.ox risk, and willingness to be vaccinated. Results: Of 2287 participants, m.st participants were m.le (2189/2287; 95.7%) and gay (1894/2287; 82.8%). Nearly all had heard about m.ox (2255/2287; 98.6%), and the m.jority were concerned about acquiring it (1461/2287; 64.4%). m.st of the 2268 participants not previously diagnosed with m.ox correctly identified skin lesions (2087; 92%), rash (1977; 87.2%), and fever (1647; 72.6%) as potential sym.tom., and prolonged and brief skin-To-skin contact as potential ways to acquire m.ox (2124, 93.7%; and 1860, 82%, respectively). The m.st acceptable behavioural changes were reducing or avoiding attendance at sex parties (1494; 65.9%) and sex-on-prem.ses venues (1503; 66.4%), and having fewer sexual partners (1466; 64.6%). m.st unvaccinated and undiagnosed participants were willing to be vaccinated (1457/1733; 84.1%). Conclusions: People at risk of m.ox should be supported to adopt acceptable risk reduction strategies during outbreaks and to seek vaccination. © 2023 CSIRO. All rights reserved.

Cigarette sm.king is a leading cause of prem.ture m.rtality, attributable to chronic exposure to toxic com.ounds in cigarette sm.ke, including tobacco-specific nitrosam.nes, which are known carcinogens. This research aim. to assess the association between NNAL, a m.tabolite of the tobacco-specific nitrosam.ne NNK, and m.rtality. Data from.14,766 U.S. adults aged 21 - 79 in the National Health and Nutrition Exam.nation Survey (2007-2014) included sm.king status and urinary NNAL concentration at the tim. of exam.nation. These data were linked to participants’ subsequent m.rtality status as recorded in the public-use Linked m.rtality File (through 2015). Cox proportional hazards regression m.dels assessed the relative risk of all-cause, cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and other-causes m.rtality for increasing levels of natural log (creatinine-adjusted NNAL). In the whole sam.le, a unit increase in log (NNAL) is associated with a 20% higher risk of all-cause (HR = 1.20;95% CI: 1.16 - 1.24), cancer (HR = 1.20;95% CI: 1.14 - 1.26), CVD (HR = 1.21;95% CI: 1.12 - 1.31) and other-causes (HR = 1.20;95% CI: 1.15 - 1.25) m.rtality. Am.ng current sm.kers, a unit increase in log (NNAL) is associated with 44% higher cancer m.rtality risk (HR = 1.44;95% CI: 1.08 - 1.92) and a 96% higher CVD m.rtality risk (HR = 1.96;95% CI: 1.20 - 3.20). Risks of all-cause and other-causes m.rtality, but neither cancer nor CVD m.rtality, were positively associated with NNAL am.ng never and form.r sm.kers. Inferences are lim.ted by the observational nature of the data, and by the focus on a single biom.rker of tobacco-related exposure. The findings suggest that urinary NNAL concentration is acting as a proxy for exposure to the toxicants in cigarette sm.ke rather than as a biom.rker of disease-specific m.rtality risk.

A biodegradable m.tallic ureteral stent with suitable m.chanical properties and antibacterial activity rem.ins a challenge.Here we reveal the scientific significance of a biodegradable m.-Sr-Ag alloy with a favorable com.ination of balanced m.chanical properties,adjustable indwelling tim. in urinary tract and evident antibacterial activity via in vivo experim.nts in a swine m.del.Attributed to the rheo-solidification process,equiaxial m.crostructure and significantly refined grains(average grain size:27.1μm.were achieved.m.17Sr2 and m.4Ag were found as the prim.ry precipitates in the m.trix,due to which the alloy obtained ca.111%increase in ultim.te tensile strength in com.arison to pure m.gnesium.Both the in vitro and in vivo results dem.nstrated the satisfactory biocom.atibility of the alloy.Histological evaluation and bioindicators analysis suggested that there was no tissue dam.ge,inflam.ation and lesions in the urinary system.caused by the degradation process.The stent also im.roved the post-operative bladder functions viewed from.the urodynam.c results.Our findings highlight the potential of this alloy as antibacterial biodegradable urinary im.lant m.terial.

On 15 Septem.er,2010,a Pechora Pipit Anthus gustavi Swinhoe was found in the Ham. prefecture（41°13＇N and 93°29＇E,1,143 m.a.s.l.）,Xinjiang,during the period of a com.rehensive scientific survey in Lop Nur region.The bird,which was photographed,is a new avian record for Xinjiang.The pipit reproduces in northern Eurasia,m.inly in wide m.adows and low hills,and can be found in open forests and nearby residential areas in the process of on m.gration.The species is an insectivore and is a rare m.grant or vagrant in Xinjiang.The geographical distribution,character,habitat,ecological habit and subspecies of the Pechora Pipit were discussed in this paper.

We have delivered viral vectors containing either Chop2 fused with GFP, Channelrhodopsin-2 （ChR2）, or Halorhodopsin （HaloR） fused with m.herry （to form.light gated cation channels or chloride pum.s, respectively）, into the dorsal cochlear nucleus （DCN）. One to eighteen m.nths later we exam.ned the CN and inferior colliculus （IC） for evidence of virally transfected cells and processes. Production of ChR2 and HaloR was observed throughout the DCN. Rhodopsin localization within neurons was determ.ned, with elongate, fusiform.and giant cells identified based on m.rphology and location within the DCN. Production of ChR2 and HaloR was found at both the injection site as well as in regions projecting to and from.the DCN. Light driven neuronal activity in the DCN was dependent upon the wavelength and intensity of the light, with only the appropriate wavelength resulting in activation and higher intensity light resulting in m.re neuronal activity. Transfecting cells via viral delivery of rhodopsins can be useful as a tract tracer and as a neuronal m.rker to delineate pathways. In the future rhodopsin delivery and activation m.y be developed as an alternative to electrical stim.lation of neurons.

This approach to m.nufacturing engineering m.y be char acterised as one of deconstruction and replacem.nt so far as the role of the hum.an being is concerned. m.re recently design engineering has been approached in a sim.lar light with research into ’intelligent’ m.thods involving, for exam.le, expert system. or genetic algorithm. to handle an increasing proportion of desi gn tasks. Expert system. are predicated on the idea that it is possible to capture and system.se significant am.unts of professional knowledge: a task that has proved with experience to be m.ch m.re difficult than when such system. wer e first proposed. Genetic algorithm., notwithstanding considerable research eff ort, have yet to m.ke significant inroads into the practise of design and m.nufa cture. This paper will draw on new and previous experim.ntal work carried out with supp ort from.industry to propose an alternative approach that is enabled by the prod ucts of m.dern inform.tion technology. In this paradigm.it is recognised that t he involvem.nt of the hum.n design expert is, for the tim. being at least, inevi table. Rather than seeking to reduce or even elim.nate the " expert" with his or her tacit knowledge, the aim.is to provide the expert with interactive to ols including im.ersive virtual reality so that im.licit, hum.n expertise can be applied effectively in the design cycle. The 3d34p, 3d35p and 3d24s4p odd configurations of the V II spectrum.have been reanalysed and three 3d24s4p triplets are assigned higher energies than previously proposed. We have determ.ned the fine structure param.ters, the largest and next largest eigenvector percentages of levels, their calculated Landé gJ-factors and predicted positions for m.ssing experim.ntal levels up to 100,000 cm.1 for the 3d24s4p configuration. Furtherm.re for the first tim. a hyperfine structure (HFS) param.tric treatm.nt, involving levels of these two configurations has been carried out. The deduced single-electron HFS param.ter values are successfully checked with those obtained by m.ans of ab initio calculations.

Using a linked-param.ter technique of level-fitting calculations in a m.lti configuration basis, a param.tric analysis of fine structure (fs) for even-parity levels of V II, involving six configurations, has been perform.d. This led us to exchange the assignm.nts of two triplets, 3d3(2F)4s c 3F and 3d4 d 3F, reported in earlier analyses as being located at 30,300 cm.1 and 30,600 cm.1, respectively. This is confirm.d by experim.ntal hyperfine structure (hfs) A constants, used as fingerprints. m.reover, the current singlet 3d24s2 1D2 position is likely too high. The fs param.ters, m.gnetic Landé g-factors, and the percentage of leading eigenvectors of levels are calculated. We present also predicted singlet, triplet and quintet positions for m.ssing experim.ntal levels up to 100,000 cm.1. The single-electron hfs param.ters are determ.ned in their entirety for 51V II for the m.del space (3d + 4s)4 with good accuracy. For the m.del space (3d + 4s)4 of 51V II the single-electron hfs param.ters are com.uted;furtherm.re, our achieved theoretical evaluations of the single-electron hfs param.ters, thanks to the use of ab initio calculations, reinforce the validity of these hfs param.ter values, deduced from.experim.ntal data.

The purpose of this study was to develop an approach for constructing a three-dim.nsional hydrogeologic fram.work using borehole driller logs. The ultim.te goal is to increase drilling success rates via a better understanding of the regional hydrogeologic fram.work in northern Ghana. Groundwater developm.nt has increased in northern Ghana, but drilling successful boreholes is difficult due to com.lex geology and lim.ted aquifer characteristic inform.tion. An approach was developed to construct a three-dim.nsional hydrogeologic fram.work of the basin using 900 borehole logs from.World Vision International’s Ghana Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Project, located in northern Ghana. The study’s approach consists of: evaluating potential software program.;collecting borehole drilling logs;data QA/QC;data standardization and norm.lization;analysis for trends and correlations;and creation of a three-dim.nsional hydrogeologic fram.work and two-dim.nsional cross sections. This approach can be used and adapted by others working to provide groundwater in developing countries.
