Recently,there has been an upsurge of activity in image-based non-photorealistic rendering(NPR),and in particular portrait image stylisation,due to the advent of neural style transfer(NST).However,the state of performance evaluation in this field is poor,especially compared to the norms in the computer vision and machine learning communities.Unfortunately,the task of evaluating image stylisation is thus far not well defined,since it involves subjective,perceptual,and aesthetic aspects.To make progress towards a solution,this paper proposes a new structured,threelevel,benchmark dataset for the evaluation of stylised portrait images.Rigorous criteria were used for its construction,and its consistency was validated by user studies.Moreover,a new methodology has been developed for evaluating portrait stylisation algorithms,which makes use of the different benchmark levels as well as annotations provided by user studies regarding the characteristics of the faces.We perform evaluation for a wide variety of image stylisation methods(both portrait-specific and general purpose,and also both traditional NPR approaches and NST)using the new benchmark dataset.

In a recent study published in Nature,Takeuchi et al.used a multiomics strategy in humans to provide compelling evidence that increased carbohydrate metabolism by the gut microbiota contributes to insulin resistance(IR).The authors uncovered a previously unknown link between elevated gut monosaccharides and host inflammatory cytokines and suggest potential intervention opportunities to combat IR by targeting specific gut microbial species.

Star clusters were historically considered simple stellar populations,with all stars sharing the same age and initial chemical composition.However,the presence of chemical anomalies in globular clusters(GCs),called multiple stellar populations(MPs),has challenged star formation theories in dense environments.Literature studies show that mass,metallicity,and age are likely controlling parameters for the manifestation of MPs.Identifying the limit between clusters with/without MPs in physical parameter space is crucial to reveal the driving mechanism behind their presence.In this study,we look for MP signals in Whiting 1,which is traditionally considered a young GC.Using the Magellan telescope,we obtained low-resolution spectra withinλλ=3850-5500?for eight giants of Whiting 1.We measured the C and N abundances from the CN and CH spectral indices.C and N abundances have variations comparable with their measurement errors(~0.1 dex),suggesting that MPs are absent from Whiting 1.Combining these findings with literature studies,we propose a limit in the metallicity vs.cluster compactness index parameter space,which relatively clearly separates star clusters with/without MPs(GCs/open clusters).This limit is physically motivated.On a larger scale,the galactic environment determines cluster compactness and metallicity,leading to metal-rich,diffuse,old clusters formed ex situ.Our proposed limit also impacts our understanding of the formation of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy:star clusters formed after the first starburst(age≤8-10 Gyr).These clusters are simple stellar populations because the enriched galactic environment is no longer suitable for MP formation.

从2013年开始,作者团队使用自主研发电化学原理臭氧探空仪在华北平原北京地区进行每周一次观测.本研究首次使用2013-2019年期间北京地区臭氧探空数据评估Aqua卫星搭载大气红外探测仪(AIRS)和Aura卫星搭载微波临边探测器(MLS)反演垂直臭氧廓线,并对比臭氧探空,AIRS和Aura卫星搭载臭氧监测仪(OMI)臭氧柱总量结果.尽管臭氧探空与卫星反演垂直臭氧廓线在局部高度处差异较大,但整体来说两者较为接近(相对偏差大多<10%).臭氧探空,AIRS和OMI三种仪器测量臭氧柱总量的年变化特征较为一致,其年均臭氧柱总量分别为351.8±18.4 DU,348.8±19.5 DU和336.9±14.2 DU.后续对国内多站点观测数据分析将有助于进一步理解臭氧探空与卫星反演臭氧资料在不同区域的一致性.

How open is the therapeutic horizon for pancreatic cancer patients?

In the nineties of the last century,it was typical for an article about pancreatic cancer to start with an introductory remark,that this malignancy is a very desperate one and that surgery is the only curative option.But it was also obvious that surgery was not really curative and most importantly,not feasible in the majority of cases.In the last two decades,we observed a dramatic increase in research on pancreatic cancer(e.***.more than 65000 articles mentioning pancreatic cancer in PubMed only in the last decade),and clearly,there is scientific progress.

Challenges in the conduct of randomised controlled trials in cardiogenic shock complicating acute myocardial infarction

Cardiogenic shock(CS)following acute myocardial infarction(AMI)is a major challenge in cardiovascular care.Mortality remains high with 40%-50%after thirty days.Randomised controlled trials(RCTs)play a key role to generate evidence on optimal care in this field.However,the number of completed or ongoing RCTs is still relatively low compared to the gaps in evidence.Challenges in the conduct of these trials are in particular the selection of patients and ethical issues in the informed consent process.When determining eligibility criteria,special attention should be paid to the severity of CS,to the inclusion of patients with cardiac arrest and to potential age limits.Median age of AMI-CS patients is increasing.Age limits are therefore controversial as it is important to include elderly patients in RCTs in order to make the results generalisable and to address the special needs of this group.As patients with AMI-CS are in most cases unable to provide informed consent themselves,a step-wise approach with acute consent by a legal representative or independent physicians and later informed consent by the patient if possible might be established depending on regularities of the respective ethical review board and country legislation.Multicenter studies should be sought to generate adequate power.

RNA sequencing role and application in clinical diagnostic

Although whole-exome sequencing and whole-genome sequencing has tremendously improved our understanding of the genetic etiology of human disorders,about half of the patients still do not receive a molecular diagnosis.The high fraction of variants with uncertain significance and the challenges of interpretation of noncoding variants have urged scientists to implement RNA sequencing(RNA-seq)in the diagnostic approach as a high throughput assay to complement genomic data with functional evidence.RNA-seq data can be used to identify aberrantly spliced genes,detect allele-specific expression,and identify gene expression outliers.Amongst eight studies utilizing RNA-seq,a mean diagnostic uplift of 15%has been reported.Here,we provide an overview of how RNA-seq has been implemented to aid in identifying the causal variants of Mendelian disorders.

A recent study by Mohanta et al.describes a new understanding of neuroimmune interactions in atherosclerosis.While atherosclerotic plaques are not innervated,ablating the sympathetic innervation to these regions attenuated atherosclerosis,suggesting a potential novel therapeutic strategy.Atherosclerosis continues to be the leading cause of death in industrialized countries due to its complications such as acute myocardial infarction or stroke.The disease is the result of a complex process,consisting of sub-endothelial lipid retention,immune cell migration,proteolytic injury,altogether leading to a chronic inflammatory responses in the wall of large arteries and ultimately plaque development.2 The inner layer of the blood vessels is not innervated and hence the nervous system connects with the vessel through its most outer layer,the lamina adventitia,hereby controlling important functions including arterial blood pressure.Beyond such homeostatic control of vessel function,increasing evidence demonstrates that activation of the sympathetic nervous system can modulate the degree of arterial inflammation.
