Enhanced thermoelectric properties of SnSe thin films grown by pulsed laser glancing-angle deposition

SnSe single crystals have been demonstrated to possess excellent thermoelectric *** this work,we demonstrate a grain size control method in growing nanocrystalline SnSe thin films through a glancing angle pulsed-laser deposition *** characterization reveals that the SnSe film deposited at a normal angle has a preferred orientation along a axis,while by contrast,the SnSe film deposited at an 80glancing angle develops a nanopillar structure with the growth direction towards the incident atomic *** glancing angle deposition greatly reduces the grain size of the thin film due to a shadowing effect to the adatoms,resulting in significantly increased power factor for more than 100%.The maximum Seebeck coefficient and power factor are 498.5 mV=K and 18.5 mWcm^(-1)K^(-2),*** enhancement of thermoelectric property can be attributed to the potential barrier scattering at grain boundaries owing to the reduced grain size and increased grain boundaries in the *** this enhanced power factor,and considering the fact that the nanopillar structure should have much lower thermal conductivity than a plain film,the zT value of such made SnSe film could be significantly larger than the corresponding single crystal film,making it a good candidate for thin film-based thermoelectric device.

Uptake of prostate cancer screening and associated factors among Chinese men aged 50 or more: a population-based survey

Objective: To investigate the uptake rate of prostate specific antigen(PSA) testing among Hong Kong Chinese males aged 50 or above, and identify factors associated with the likelihood of undergoing a PSA ***: A population-based telephone survey was conducted in Hong Kong in 2007. The survey covered demographic information, perceived health status, use of complementary therapy, cancer screening behavior, perceived susceptibility to cancer and family history of cancer. Descriptive statistics, percentages and logistic regression analysis were used for data ***: A total of 1,002 men aged 50 or above took part in the study(response rate =67%), and the uptake rate of PSA testing was found to be 10%. Employment status, use of complementary therapy, perceiving regular visits to a doctor as good for health and the recommendations of health professionals were significant factors associated with PSA ***: The uptake rate of PSA testing in the study population was very low. Among all the factors identified, recommendations from health professionals had the strongest association with the uptake of PSA testing, and they should therefore take an active role in educating this population about cancer prevention and detection.

Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy for advanced hepatobiliary malignancies: a single-center experience

BACKGROUND: Hepatopancreatoduodenectomy is a complicated and challenging procedure but necessary for curative resection for advanced hepatobiliary malignancies. This retrospective study was to examine the safety and survival outcomes of hepatopancreatoduodenectomy in our center. METHODS: Prospectively collected data of 12 patients who underwent hepatopancreatoduodenectomy for advanced hepatobiliary malignancies in our hospital from January 1998 to December 2014 were analyzed. The primary endpoints are treatment-related morbidity and mortality and the secondary endpoints are overall survival and disease-free survival. RESULTS: Curative resection was achieved in 11 (91.7%) patients. Complications developed in 10 (83.3%) patients. Three hospital deaths resulted from multiorgan failure secondary to postoperative pancreatic fistula or hepaticojejunostomy leakage. Six of the nine remaining patients had disease recurrence. The nine patients had a median survival of 39.8 (5.3-151.8) months. The 1-, 3- and 5-year overall survival rates were 66.7%, 55.6% and 27.8%, respectively. The corresponding disease-free survival rates were 55.6%, 44.4% and 29.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Morbidity and mortality after hepatopancreatoduodenectomy were significant. With RO resection, the 5-year overall survival and disease-free survival rates were 27.8% and 29.6%, respectively.

Social security is an important social and public policy measure to help address poverty in any contemporary *** Comprehensive Social Security Assistance(CSSA)system in Hong Kong provides a safety net for those aged children and adults below 65 years old who cannot support themselves *** is designed to bring their income up to a prescribed level to meet their basic *** rapid increase in social welfare expenditure in the last decade has become a concern to the Hong Kong SAR *** overall social welfare expenditure has accounted for nearly 15.6%of government expenditure in 2018,with the total amount increasing from$58 billion to$90 billion(an increase of 72.4%)for the period ***,the amount spent on CSSA only increased from$20.7 billion to$22.3 billion with an increase of 7.7%only for the same *** much slower magnitude of increase is related to the reduction in the number of CSSA recipients,which decreased from 237,501 to 185,528 over the period.A decomposition method was used to assess the changes in the number of people in the CSSA *** showed that the rate of arriving into the system has been decreasing due to a robust economy with a very low unemployment rate;whereas moving out of the system has also been decreasing in the past 5 *** phenomenon can be partly attributed to the widening of the income gap in the community in the *** the increase in population size,as long as employment conditions remain strong and the momentum of leaving the system can be maintained,the number of CSSA recipients will continue to ***,the results also suggested that a certain proportion of CSSA recipients will not be able to move out of the system and have been *** innovative methods to help them out of CSSA are *** view of the poor economic outlook arising from the COVID-19 pandemic,it is important for the Government to have effective measures to keep people in their *** the

Importance:131I-metaiodobenzylguanidine(131I-mIBG)has a significant targeted antitumor effect for ***,currently there is a paucity of data for the use of 131I-mIBG as a"front-line"therapeutic agent in those patients with newly diagnosed high-risk neuroblastoma as part of the conditioning regimen for myeloablative chemotherapy(MAC).Objective:To evaluate the feasibility of upfront consolidation treatment with 131I-mIBG plus MAC and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT)in high-risk neuroblastoma ***:A retrospective,single-center study was conducted from 2003-2019 on newly diagnosed high-risk neuroblastoma patients without progressive disease(PD)after the completion of induction *** received 131I-mIBG infusion and MAC followed by ***:A total of 24 high-risk neuroblastoma patients were enrolled with a median age of 3.0 years at *** receiving this sequential consolidation treatment,3 of 13 patients who were in partial response(PR)before 131I-mIBG treatment achieved either complete response(CR)(n=1)or very good partial response(VGPR)(n=2)after *** a median follow-up duration of 13.0 months after 131I-mIBG therapy,the 5-year event-free survival and overall survival rates estimated were 29%and 38%for the entire cohort,and 53%and 67%for the patients who were in CR/VGPR at the time of 131I-mIBG ***:Upfront consolidation treatment with 131I-mIBG plus MAC and HSCT is feasible and tolerable in high-risk neuroblastoma patients,however the survival benefit of this 131I-mIBG regimen is only observed in the patients who were in CR/VGPR at the time of 131I-mIBG treatment.

Oncogene GAEC1 regulates CAPN10 expression which predicts survival in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

AIM: To identify the downstream regulated genes of GAEC1 oncogene in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and their clinicopathological significance. METHODS: The anti-proliferative effect of knocking down the expression of GAEC1 oncogene was stud-ied by using the RNA interference (RNAi) approach through transfecting the GAEC1 -overexpressed esophageal carcinoma cell line KYSE150 with the pSilencer vector cloned with a GAEC1 -targeted sequence, followed by MTS cell proliferation assay and cell cycle analysis using flow cytometry. RNA was then extracted from the parental, pSilencer-GAEC1 -targeted sequence transfected and pSilencer negative control vector transfected KYSE150 cells for further analysis of different patterns in gene expression. Genes differentially expressed with suppressed GAEC1 expression were then determined using Human Genome U133 Plus 2.0 cDNA microarray analysis by comparing with the parental cells and normalized with the pSilencer negative control vector transfected cells. The most prominently regulated genes were then studied by immunohistochemical staining using tissue microarrays to determine their clinicopathological correlations in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma by statistical analyses. RESULTS: The RNAi approach of knocking down gene expression showed the effective suppression of GAEC1 expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cell line KYSE150 that resulted in the inhibition of cell proliferation and increase of apoptotic population. cDNA microarray analysis for identifying differentially expressed genes detected the greatest levels of downregulation of calpain 10 (CAPN10 ) and upregulation of trinucleotide repeat containing 6C (TNRC6C ) transcripts when GAEC1 expression was suppressed. At the tissue level, the high level expression of calpain 10 protein was significantly associated with longer patient survival (month) of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma compared to the patients with low level of calpain 10 expression (37.73 ±

Trochanter/calcar preserving reconstruction in tumors involving the femoral head and neck

AIM: To evaluate the results of hip reconstruction with extensive excision for tumor confined to the femoral head and neck. METHODS: We designed a resection preserving the greater trochanter and lower portion of calcar femorale, and utilized conventional total hip prosthesis. We retrospectively reviewed 7 patients, who underwent a wide resection and reconstruction using conventional hip prosthesis. There were 3 men and 4 women and their mean age was 42.5 years(22 to 65 years). The histologic diagnosis of each patient was low-grade osteosarcoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, liposclerosing myxofibroma, intraosseous lipoma, chondroblastoma, giant cell tumor and focal intramedullary fibrosis. RESULTS: One patient with lymphoma died due to disease dissemination at 10 mo postoperatively and the remaining 6 patients were followed for a mean of 4.7 years(3 to 6 years). All patients were able to return to their daily activities and no patient had local recurrence. No radiographic signs of loosening, wear, and osteolysis were found at the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: Trochanter/calcar-preserving resectionof the proximal femur and reconstruction using conventional total hip prosthesis, is a satisfactory treatment for tumors confined to the femoral head and neck.

Phenylketonuria in Hong Kong Chinese： a call for hyperphenylalaninemia newborn screening in the Special Administrative Region, China

Hyperphenylalaninemia is one of the commonest inborn errors of metabolism affecting approximately 1 in 15 000 live births. Among Chinese, BH4 deficiency leading to hyperphenylalaninemia is much commoner than in Caucasians. Exact diagnosis is important for the treatment and genetic counseling. In 2000, newborn screening for phenylketonuria is mandatory by law in China throughout the whole country. However, it is not yet included in the newborn screening program of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China. Published data on hyperphenylalaninemia among Hong Kong Chinese are largely lacking. We report a 1-year-old Hong Kong Chinese girl with severe 6-pyruvoyl-tetrahydropterin synthase （PTPS） deficiency. The patient presented with infantile hypotonia and was misdiagnosed as cerebral palsy. She had very mild hyperphenylalaninemia （95 IJmol/L）, significantly high phenylalnine-to-tyrosine ratio （3.1）, and ele~,ated prolactin of 1109 m lU/L. Genetic analysis confirmed a homozygous known disease-causing mutation PTS NM_000317.1： c.259C〉T; NP_000308.1： p.P87S in the proband. In our local experience, while the estimated prevalence of hyperphenylalaninemia due to PTPS deficiency was reported to be 1 in 29 542 live births, not a single case of phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency has been reported. Furthermore, there is a general lack of awareness of inherited metabolic diseases in the community as well as among the medical professionals. Very often, a low index of clinical suspicion will lead to delay in diagnosis, multiple unnecessary and costly investigations, prolonged morbidity and anxiety to the family affected. We strongly recommend that expanded newborn screening for hyperphenylalaninemia should be implemented for every baby born in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China.

Background Data of classical inborn errors of metabolism （IEM） of amino acids, organic acids and fatty acid oxidation are largely lacking in Hong Kong, where mass spectrometry-based expanded newborn screening for IEM has not been initiated. The current study aimed to evaluate the approximate incidence, spectrum and other characteristics of classical IEM in Hong Kong, which would be important in developing an expanded newborn screening program for the local area.
