Aim:Serum amyloid A(SAA)is an important mammalian acute ***,weaim to investigate the effect of SAA on apoptosis and its mechanism of action inhuman amniotic WISH ***:The expression of formyl peptide receptor(FPRL1),which is reported as a SAA receptor,was tested using RT-PCR andligand binding assay with radio-labeled FPRL1 *** effect of SAA onproliferating cell population was evaluated by thymidine incorporation *** protein phosphorylation levels and caspase-3 activity were detected by West-ern blot ***:SAA inhibits thymidine incorporation in human amnioticWISH cells.A SAA-induced decrease of proliferating cell population was accom-panied with nuclear condensation and caspase-3 activation in WISH cells,sug-gesting that SAA induces WISH cell *** FPRL1 has been reportedas a SAA receptor,we investigated the effects of several FRPL1 agonists on aproliferating cell population in WISH *** the tested FPRL1 agonists,only SAA induced a decrease of proliferating cell population in WISH *** downstream signaling of SAA,we found that SAA stimulated extracellularsignal-regulated kinase and p38 kinase,which were not inhibited by pertussistoxin(PTX),ruling out the role of PTX-sensitive *** a SAA-induced decrease of proliferating cell population was not affected by PTX,sug-gesting that SAA inhibits WISH cell apoptosis in a PTX-sensitive G-protein-independent manner.A SAA-induced decrease of a proliferating cell populationwas completely blocked by PD98059 and SB203580,suggesting that mitogen-activated protein kinase activities are essentially required for the ***:SAA is a novel inducer for WISH cell apoptosis,and the PTX-insen-sitive pathway is involved in the process.

Pistons used in automobile engines are made of aluminum alloy; and endurance of high pressure and high temperature is required. Recently, high strength pistons are needed to cope with the increase of pressure and temperature in the engine cylinder. A high strength piston is possible when the piston casting has little or no casting defects, such as micro-pores and cracks. Generally the defects can be evaluated by non-destructive testing (NDT), and the most efficient ways for evaluation are using ultrasonics and computer tomography. In the present study, two NDT methods were compared and evaluated to investigate the defects in the aluminum piston castings. Artificial defects were machined by using very small drill bits with diameters 1, 0.5, 0.3, 0.2 and 0.1 mm. The defects were investigated by using an ultrasonic tester and a computer tomography system. Defects smaller than 0.3 mm may not be found by using the ultrasonic test, but the defects may be found by using the computer tomography system. The investigation conditions for detecting small defects and the scanning time for in-line defect analysis are discussed in the present study.

Surgical palliation of unresectable pancreatic head cancer in elderly patients

AIM: To determine if surgical biliary bypass would provide improved quality of residual life and safe palliation in elderly patients with unresectable pancreatic head cancer. METhoDS: Nineteen patients, 65 years of age or older, were managed with surgical biliary bypass (Group A). These patients were compared with 19 patients under 65 years of age who were managed with surgical biliary bypass (Group B). In addition, the results for group A were compared with those obtained from 17 patients, 65 years of age or older (Group C), who received percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage to evaluate the quality of residual life. RESULTS: Five patients (26.0%) in Group A had complications, including one intraabdominal abscess, one pulmonary atelectasis, and three wound infections. One death (5.3%) occurred on postoperative day 3. With respect to morbidity, mortality, and postoperative hospitalization, no statistically significant difference was noted between Groups A and B. The number of readmissions and the rate of recurrent jaundice were lower in Group A than in Group C, to a statistically significant degree (P = 0.019, P = 0.029, respectively). The median hospital-free survival period and themedian overall survival were also signifi cantly longer in Group A (P = 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Surgical palliation does not increase the morbidity or mortality rates, but it does increase the survival rate and improve the quality of life in elderly patients with unresectable pancreatic head cancer.

To investigate a possible therapeutic mechanism of cell therapy in the field of cerebral palsy using granulocyte-colony stimulating factor（G-CSF）-mobilized peripheral blood mononuclear cells（m PBMCs）,we compared the expression of inflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors in PBMCs and m PBMCs from children with cerebral palsy to those from healthy adult donors and to cord blood mononuclear cells donated from healthy *** significant differences in expression of neurotrophic factors were found between PBMCs and m ***,in cerebral palsy children,the expression of interleukin-6 was significantly increased in m PBMCs as compared to PBMCs,and the expression of interleukin-3 was significantly decreased in m PBMCs as compared to *** healthy adults,the expression levels of both interleukin-1βand interleukin-6 were significantly increased in m PBMCs as compared to *** expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factors in m PBMC from cerebral palsy children was significantly higher than that in the cord blood or m PBMCs from healthy *** expression of G-CSF in m PBMCs from cerebral palsy children was comparable to that in the cord blood but significantly higher than that in m PBMCs from healthy *** expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines（interleukin-1β,interleukin-3,and-6）and higher expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines（interleukin-8 and interleukin-9）were observed from the cord blood and m PBMCs from cerebral palsy children rather than from healthy *** findings indicate that m PBMCs from cerebral palsy and cord blood mononuclear cells from healthy newborns have the potential to become seed cells for treatment of cerebral palsy.

This study attempted to develop an appropriate catalyst used for the steam reforming of gasified spent solvents. Rh2O3/ CeOE-Al2O3 catalysts with various CeO2 loadings were prepared and heated at different temperatures of 500 and 800 ℃, and their surface properties were studied using X-ray diffraction （XRD）, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, temperature programmed reduction （TPR） and Bmmauer-Emmett-Teller （BET） analyses. Rhodium existed in the form of Rh2O3, regardless of the sample composition as well as the heating temperature. In the tested range of cerium addition （up to 12 times the rhodium mass）, no significant changes in BET surface areas and binding energy corresponding to Rh 3d5/2 were observed. Instead, the addition of cerium led to a greatly enhanced dispersion of rhodium nanoparticles, and no agglomeration of rhodium was observed for samples heated even at 800 ℃. honeycomb monolith rhodium catalysts promoted with cerium were fabricated and tested for the steam reforming of a gasified spent solvent, mainly consisting of butylene （C4H8）. The test results suggested that a cerium-promoted rhodium catalyst could be used as an appropriate reforming catalyst for treating low-quality non-methane hydrocarbons without the formation of coke at high temperatures of up to 900 ℃.

Study of fuzzy entropy and similarity measure on intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs) was proposed and analyzed. Unlike fuzzy set, IFSs contain uncertainty named hesitance, which is contained in fuzzy membership function itself. Hence, designing fuzzy entropy is not easy because of many entropy definitions. By considering different fuzzy entropy definitions, fuzzy entropy on IFSs is designed and discussed. Similarity measure was also presented and its usefulness was verified to evaluate degree of similarity.

BACKGROUND:Appropriate palliation for unresectable pancreatic head cancer is most *** study was undertaken to compare the survival of patients with biliary obstruction caused by unresectable pancreatic head cancer after surgical and non-surgical palliation. METhoDS:We retrospectively reviewed 69 patients who underwent palliative treatment for unresectable pancreatic head ***-two patients with locally advanced disease (local vascular invasion)and 17 with distant metastatic disease were *** patients were divided into two groups,surgical and non-surgical palliation. RESULTS:Thirty-eight patients underwent biliary bypass surgery and 31 had percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage(PTBD).There was no significant difference in the early complications,successful biliary drainage, recurrent jaundice,and 30-day mortality between surgical palliation and ***,in 52 patients whose tumor was unresectable secondary to local vascular invasion,the rate of recurrent jaundice after successful surgical biliary palliation was lower than that in patients who had non- surgical palliation(Pho underwent surgical palliation had a longer hospital-free survival rate(Phough they had a longer postoperative hospital stay(P=0.004)during the first admission ***:In patients with preoperative evaluations showing potentially resectable tumors and/or no metastatic lesions,surgical exploration should be ***,in patients who have unresectable cancer or limited metastatic disease on exploration,surgical palliation should be performed for longer survival and better quality of survival.

BACKGROUND The mainstay of treating nonfunctioning-pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(NFPNETs)is surgical ***,minimally invasive approaches to pancreatic resection for treating NF-PNETs are not widely accepted,and the longterm oncological outcomes of such approaches remain *** To determine the short-and long-term outcomes of minimally invasive pancreatic resection conducted in patients with *** Prospective databases from Severance hospital were searched for 110 patients who underwent curative resection for NF-PNETs between January 2003 and August *** The proportion of minimally invasive surgery(MIS)procedures performed for NF-PNET increased to more than 75%after *** was no significant difference in post-operative complications(P=0.654),including pancreatic fistula(P=0.890)and delayed gastric emptying(P=0.652),between MIS and open *** statistically significant difference was found in disease-free survival between the open approach group and the MIS group(median follow-up period,28.1 mo;P=0.428).In addition,the surgical approach(MIS vs open)was not found to be an independent prognostic factor in treating NF-PNET patients[Exp(β)=1.062;P=0.929].CONCLUSION Regardless of the type of surgery,a minimally invasive approach can be safe and feasible for select NF-PNET patients.
