Predicting the Rainfall-Triggered Landslides in a Forested Mountain Region Using TRIGRS Model

Landslides are natural disasters which can pose a serious threat to human and property in many areas around the world. The Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-based Regional Slope-stability (TRIGRS) model was used to investigate the rainfall-induced shallow landslides in a forested mountain region, Korea. Various input data for TRIGRS model include time-varying rainfall, topographic characteristics, soil depth, material strength, and hydraulic properties. A series of calculations were conducted in determining the slope stability over the Jangheung region in Korea during the storm occurred on August 6, 1998. The results show that TRIGRS model captured about 64.1% of landslides that were extracted from the IKONOS2 imageries. The model demonstrated how the factor of safety changed with time during a storm considering both the transient and spatial responses of pore water pressure in its slope stability calculation.

Photo-protective functions were investigated in phytoplankton assemblages at Kongsfjorden, Svalbard in spring, using their UV-absorbing compounds （mycosporine-like amino acids （MAAs））, xanthophyllpigments （diadinoxanthin （DD） and diatoxanthin （DT）） and〈beta〉-dimethylsulphoniopropionate （〈beta〉-DMSP）. The dominant phytoplankton species in the inner bay were dominated by Phaeocystis spp. and nanoflagellates, while the offshore waters were dominated by Thalassiosira spp. In the inner bay, UV- absorbing compounds and xanthophyll pigments exhibited higher ratios of MAA to chlorophyll a （MAA：chl a ratio）, and both DD and DT to chlorophyll a （DD：chl a ratio and DT：chl a ratio）, respectively. Thus, the photoprotective-pigrnents such as DD and DT appear to complement MAAs in the natural phytoplankton assemblage. however, the ratio of 〈beta〉-DMSP to chlorophyll a （〈beta〉-DMSP：chl a ratio） did not show a distinct spatial distribution according to environmental factors or interspecies differences. In this study, we found that photoprotective compounds occurred in a manner dependent on the phytoplankton species composition in Kongsfjorden Bay, where Phaeocystis is the dominant species.

The objective of this study is to investigate the immune-enhancing ability of viable and heat-killed Weissella cibaria JW15(JW15)isolated from Kimchi in RAW 264.7 *** immune effects were evaluated by measuring the production of NO,cytokines,inflammatory enzyme,and activation of NF-κ*** JW15 executed higher activity on stimulating the release of TNF-αas well as activating NF-κB compared to that of heatkilled ***,viable and heat-killed JW15 significantly increased the production of NO,IL-6 and TNF-αmore than that of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG(LGG).Furthermore,viable JW15 induced higher production of i NOS compared with that of viable ***,our finding indicates that viable JW15 had similar,if not more,immune-enhancing activities as heat-killed *** addition,viable JW15 had higher immune-enhancing activity than commercial strain ***,viable JW15 has the potential to be used as a functional food to improve the host immune response.

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells （BMSCs） have been shown to promote the regeneration of injured peripheral nerves. Pulsed electromagnetic field （PEMF） reportedly promotes the proliferation and neuronal differentiation of BMSCs. Low-frequency PEMF can induce the neuronal differentiation of BMSCs in the absence of nerve growth factors. This study was designed to investigate the effects of low-frequency PEMF pretreatment on the proliferation and function of BMSCs and the effects of low-frequency PEMF pre-treated BMSCs on the regeneration of injured peripheral nerve using in vitro and in vivo *** in vitro experiments, quantitative DNA analysis was performed to determine the proliferation of BMSCs, and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction was performed to detect S100 （Schwann cell marker）, glial fibrillary acidic protein （astrocyte marker）, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor （neurotrophic factors） mRNA expression. In the in vivo experiments, rat models of crush-injured mental nerve established using clamp method were randomly injected with low-frequency PEMF pretreated BMSCs, unpretreated BMSCs or PBS at the injury site （1 × 106 cells）. DiI-labeled BMSCs injected at the injury site were counted under the fluorescence microscope to determine cell survival. One or two weeks after cell injection, functional recovery of the injured nerve was assessed using the sensory test with von Frey filaments. Two weeks after cell injection, axonal regeneration was evaluated using histomorphometric analysis and retrograde labeling of trigeminal ganglion neurons. In vitro experiment results revealed that low-frequency PEMF pretreated BMSCs proliferated faster and had greater mRNA expression of growth factors than unpretreated BMSCs. In order to control the size and distribution of the high conductive Fe2P in LiFePO4/Fe2P composite, two different cooling rates (Fast: 15 ℃·min-1, Slow: 2 ℃·min-1) were employed after mechanical alloying. The discharge capacity of the fast cooled was 83 mAh·g-1 and the slow cooled 121 mAh·g-1. The particle size of the synthesized powder was examined by transmission electron microscopy and distribution of Fe2P was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, two-step heat treatment was carried out for better distribution of Fe2P. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement reveal that LiFePO4/Fe2P composite consists of 95.77% LiFePO4 and 4.33% of Fe2P.

The formation mechanism of calcareous deposit films in seawater involves an increase in pH at the metal/solution interface due to cathodic reactions, a raised carbonate ion concentration at the interface and precipitation of inorganic deposits such as CaCO3, Mg(OH)2. Environmentally friendly hybrid calcareous deposit films were formed by an electrochemical technique on steel substrates in various solution environments. And the influence of dissolved gas on formation of calcareous deposit films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and X-ray diffractometry(XRD). Consequently, these results showed that formation of good overall calcareous deposited films by dissolved gas in seawater environments can be achieved by controlling the material composition and structure through effective use of electrochemical method.

The effect of grain size on the flow stress in an ECAPed Ti with a constant texture was investigated,assuming that 2,4,5 and 6 passes microstructures have a similar *** average size of recrystallized grains decreased to 0.5 μm,0.4 μm,and 0.3 μm with respect to the ECAP pass number of 2,4,and 6,*** ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) increase with an increase in the number of *** UTS and YS of the 6 passes ECAPed sample were found to be 740.2 MPa and 580.3 MPa,*** equation for the flow stress of an ECAPed Ti with a constant texture as a function of the strain and grain size was derived for the ECAPed *** following equation was finally obtained:σ(ε)=103.9+1825ε-9.6ε1/2·d-1/2+8.3d-1/2.

The extraction and separation of aloe emodin were optimized via selective molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction. Molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared from the functional monomer, methacrylic acid and a mixture of ethanol/dodecanol（90/10, volume ratio） as porogen. It overcomes the common problems of imprin- ting biological polar compounds and shows high selectivity compared favorably with those of non-imprinted polymer and commercially available C18 and silica cartridges in similar aloe emodin tests. Good linearity was obtained be- tween 0.002 and 2.5 mg/mL（r2=0.998） with relative standard deviations below 3.3%.
