No Quantum Process Can Explain the Existence of the Preferred Basis: Decoherence Is Not Universal

Environment induced decoherence, and other quantum processes, have been proposed in the literature to explain the apparent spontaneous selection—out of the many mathematically eligible bases—of a privileged measurement basis that corresponds to what we actually observe. This paper describes such processes, and demonstrates that—contrary to common belief—no such process can actually lead to a preferred basis in general. The key observation is that environment induced decoherence implicitly assumes a prior independence of the observed system, the observer and the environment. However, such independence cannot be guaranteed, and we show that environment induced decoherence does not succeed in establishing a preferred measurement basis in general. We conclude that the existence of the preferred basis must be postulated in quantum mechanics, and that changing the basis for a measurement is, and must be, described as an actual physical process.

The effects of ethephon and abscisic acid(ABA) application on ripening-related genes of pre-harvest ‘Kohi' kiwifruit(Actinidia chinensis) were studied to clarify the possibility of the fruit ripening on the vine. The fruits were treated on the vine at mature stage with 250 μL·L^(-1)ethephon or 100 μmol·L^(-1)ABA, and the expression levels of chlorophyll synthase(Ac CLS), chlorophyllase1(Ac CLH1), polygalacturonase(Ac PG), expansin(Ac EXP),β-amylase(Acβ-AM), sucrose synthase(Ac SUSY), MADS-box SEPALLATA4/RIPENING INHIBITOR-like(Ac SEP4/RIN) and FRUITFUL-like(Ac TDR4/FUL) genes were analyzed. The expression levels of Ac PG, Ac EXP, Acβ-AM, and Ac SUSY increased in the ethephon-treated fruit, but those of Ac CLH1 at 6and 9 days after treatment and Ac CLS decreased. Moreover, the expression levels of Ac SEP4/RIN and Ac TDR4/FUL, the latter of which is associated with ethylene biosynthesis, were higher in the ethephon-treated fruit. The expression level of each gene in ABA-treated fruit was not significantly different from that of the untreated control. The results suggest that ethephon application increases the expression levels of Ac PG,Ac EXP, Acβ-AM, Ac SUSY, Ac SEP4/RIN, and Ac TDR4/FUL in ‘Kohi' kiwifruit on the vine.

Elastic neutron diffraction measurements were performed on single crystals to study the ground state below the mysterious exotic transition temperature 0.86 K. An antiferromagnetic order with a tiny moment of 0.027 μB per formula is formed as the ground state for CeOs4Sb12 below the transition point. Our neutron data gives the evidence of spin density wave state for CeOs4Sb12 in this work.

Increased tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 expression in human colorectal adenomas

AIM: To determine the expression statuses of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, its receptors (TNF-R) and downstream effector molecules in human colorectal adenomas. METHODS: We measured the serum concentrations of TNF-α and its receptors in 62 colorectal adenoma patients and 34 healthy controls. The protein expression of TNF-α, TNF-R1, TNF-R2 and downstream signals of the TNF receptors, such as c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), nuclear factor-κ B and caspase-3, were also investigated in human colorectal adenomas and in normal colorectal mucosal tissues by immunohistochemistry. Immunofluorescence confocal microscopy was used to investigate the consistency of expression of TNF-R1 and phospho-JNK (p-JNK). RESULTS: The serum levels of soluble TNF-R1 (sTNF-R1) in adenoma patients were significantly higher than in the control group (3.67 ± 0.86 ng/mL vs 1.57 ± 0.72 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed the high diagnostic sensitivity of TNF-R1 measurements (AUC was 0.928) for the diagnosis of adenoma, and the best cut-off level of TNF-R1 was 2.08 ng/mL, with a sensitivity of 93.4% and a specificity of 82.4%. There were no significant differences in the serum levels of TNF-α or sTNF-R2 between the two groups. Immunohistochemistry showed high levels of TNF-R1 and p-JNK expression in the epithelial cells of adenomas. Furthermore, a high incidence of co-localization of TNF-R1 and p-JNK was identified in adenoma tissue. CONCLUSION: TNF-R1 may be a promising biomarker of colorectal adenoma, and it may also play an important role in the very early stages of colorectal carcinogenesis.

AIM: To evaluate the effectuality and safety of cataract surgery combined with either ab interno trabeculotomy by the microhook(μLOT) or a single i Stent? trabecular bypass implantation(i Stent) in eyes with cataract and mild-tomoderate glaucoma. METHODS: This study enrolled subjects with mild-tomoderate open angle glaucoma with visually significant cataract who used two or more ophthalmic antiglaucoma agents between 60 and 90 y of age. Patients underwent cataract surgery cooperated with either implantation of an i Stent(i Stent-phaco) or excisional goniotomy with the μLOT(μLOT-phaco). Patients underwent μLOT-phaco in the eye with lower the mean deviation, according to the Humphrey field analyzer, while i Stent-phaco was carried out on the other eye. Intraocular pressure(IOP) pre-and post-surgery, alterations in anterior chamber flare(ACF), and corneal endothelial cell density(ECD) were ***: Twenty subjects were enrolled(mean age: 73.6±7.3 y). The mean medicated preoperative IOP was 16.7 mm Hg in the μLOT and 16.2 mm Hg in the i Stent eyes. The mean final IOP at 12 mo was 13.6 mm Hg in the μLOT eyes and 13.6 mm Hg in the i Stent eyes, representing a 17.8% and 17.2% reduction, respectively. The preoperative ACF in the μLOT eyes was 9.5 pc/ms and it returned to normal in 30 d postoperatively, with a value of 11.4 pc/ms. In the i Stent eyes, ACF was 9.6 pc/ms preoperatively and it returned to normal by 7 d postoperatively(11.2 pc/ms atday 7), demonstrating that postoperative inflammation was less in the i Stent eyes. The corneal ECD in both groups was not significantly ***: In this study, i Stent and μLOT are both effective through 12 mo of follow-up. Safety is more favorable in the i Stent eyes, based on early anterior chamber inflammation.

This study provides new insights into the comparison of cable-stayed and extradosed bridges based on the safety assessment of their stay *** bridges are often regarded as identical structures owing to the use of inclined cables;however,the international standards for bridge design stipulate different safety factors for stay cables of both types of *** address this misconception,a comparative study was carried out on the safety factors of stay cables under fatigue and ultimate limit states by considering the effects of various untoward and damaging factors,such as overloading,cable loss,and *** primary goal of this study is to describe the structural disparities between both types of bridges and evaluate their structural redundancies by employing deterministic and nondeterministic *** achieve this goal,three-dimensional finite-element models of both bridges were developed based on the current design guidelines for stay cables in *** the balanced states of the bridge models were achieved,static analyses were performed for different safety factors of stay cables in a parametric ***,the first-order reliability method and Monte Carlo method were applied to determine the reliability index of stay *** analysis results show that cable-stayed and extradosed bridges exhibit different structural redundancies for different safety factors under the same loading ***,a significant increase in structural redundancy occurs with an incremental increase in the safety factors of stay cables.

Two-dimensional(2D)titanium carbide MXene Ti_(3)C_(2) has attracted significant research interest in energy storage *** this study,we prepared Chl@Ti_(3)C_(2) composites by simply mixing a chlorophyll derivative(e.g.,zinc methyl 3-devinyl-3-hydroxymethylpyropheophorbide a(Chl))and Ti_(3)C_(2) in tetrahydrofuran,where the Chl molecules were aggregated among the multi-layered Ti_(3)C_(2) MXene or on its surface,increasing the interlayer space of Ti_(3)C_(2).The as-prepared Chl@Ti_(3)C_(2) was employed as the anode material in the lithium-ion battery(LIB)with lithium metal as the *** resulting LIB exhibited a higher reversible capacity and longer cycle performance than those of LIB based on pure Ti_(3)C_(2),and its specific discharge capacity continuously increased along with the increasing number of cycles,which can be attributed to the gradual activation of Chl@Ti_(3)C_(2) accompanied by the electrochemical *** discharge capacity of 1 wt-%Chl@Ti_(3)C_(2) was recorded to be 325 mA·h·g^(-1) at the current density of 50 mA·g^(-1) with a Coulombic efficiency of 56% and a reversible discharge capacity of 173 mA·h·g^(-1) at the current density of 500 mA·g^(-1) after 800 *** work provides a novel strategy for improving the energy storage performance of 2D MXene materials by expanding the layer distance with organic dye aggregates.
