Relationship between vitamin D and IL-23,IL-17 and macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 as markers of fibrosis in hepatitis C virus Egyptians

AIM: To assess vitamin D in hepatitis C patients and its relationship to interleukin (IL)-23, IL-17, and macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1). METHODS: The study was conducted on 50 Egyptian hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype number IV-infected patients and 25 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects. Venous blood samples were obtained. Samples were allowed to clot and sera were separated by centrifugation and stored at -20?°C. A 25 hydroxy vitamin D assay was carried out using solid phase RIA. A 1,25 dihydroxy vitamin D assay was carried out using a commercial kit purchased from Incstar Corporation. IL-17 and -23 and MCP-1 were assayed by an enzyme immunoassay. Quantitative and qualitative polymerase chain reaction for HCV virus were done by TaqMan technology. Only HCV genotype IV-infected subjects were included in the study. The mean ± SD were determined, a t-test for comparison of means of different parameters was used. Correlation analysis was done using Pearson’s correlation. Differences among different groups were determined using the Kruskal-Wallis test. RESULTS: The mean vitamin D level in HCV patients (group?I) was 15 ± 5.2 ng/mL while in control (group II) was 39.7 ± 10.8. For active vitamin D in group?I?as 16.6 ± 4.8 ng/mL while in group II was 41.9 ± 7.9. IL-23 was 154 ± 97.8 in group?I?and 6.7 ± 2.17 in group II. IL-17 was 70.7 ± 72.5 in cases and 1.2 ± 0.4 in control. MCP-1 was 1582 ± 794.4 in group?I?and 216.1 ± 5.38 in group II. Vitamin D deficiency affected 72% of HCV-infected patients and 0% of the control group. Vitamin D insufficiency existed in 28% of HCV-infected patients and 12% of the control group. One hundred percent of the cirrhotic patients and 40% of non cirrhotic HCV-infected patients had vitamin D deficiency. IL-23, IL-17, and MCP-1 were markedly increased in HCV-infected patients in comparison to controls.A significant negative correlation between vitamin D and IL-17 and -23 and MCP-1 was detected. Products and Kinetics of the Reaction of Monomeric Target Bis-(Acetylacetonato) Copper(II) with Transmetalator Bis-(Diethoxydithiophosphato) Zinc(II) in Methylene Chloride

Reaction of bis-(acetylacetonato) copper(ΙΙ) (A) with transmetalator Zn((EtO)2PS2)2 (B2;Et = ethyl) in methylene chloride is a simple irreversible second-order process over a wide temperature range which is the first example of a second-order reaction of mononuclear target A with a transmetalator. The plots of kobsd vs [A] are linear, meaning that there is one A and one B2 in the activated complex of the slowest reaction step. The slowest step is precursor formation on the basis that B2 is an exceptionally weak complex. The product of the A/B2 reaction is the strong successor complex Zn(acac)2•Cu(ps)2. The data are compared with those for reactions of the same target (A) with S-methyle isopropylidenehydrazinecarbodithioate-carbodithioato-metal(II) complexes M(SN)2 (M=Ni (C1) and Zn (C2)). The reaction is not like that of A with Ni ((MeO)2PS2)2 (B1;Me=methyl), because it is irreversible and also consistent with the measured lower relative thermodynamic stability of B2 compared to B1.

High Gain of UWB Planar Antenna Utilising FSS Reflector for UWB Applications

In this paper,a high gain and directional coplanarwaveguide(CPW)-fed ultra-wideband(UWB)planar antenna with a new frequency selective surface(FSS)unit cells design is proposed for UWB *** proposed UWB antenna was designed based on the Mercedes artistic-shaped planar(MAP)*** antenna consisted of a circular ring embedded with three straight legs for antenna impedance bandwidth *** modelled FSS used the integration of a two parallel conductive metallic patch with a circular loop *** FSS provided a UWB stopband filter response covering a bandwidth of 10.5 GHz,for frequencies from 2.2 to 12.7 *** proposed FSS had a compact physical dimension of 5 mm×5 mm×1.6 mm,with a printed array of 19×19 FSS unit *** FSS unit cells were printed on only one side of the dielectric FR4 substrate and placed as a sandwich between the antenna and the reflector ground *** equivalent circuit configuration(ECC)was used to verify the FSS unit cell structure’s *** simulated results indicated that the UWB MAP antenna and FSS reflector provided a fractional bandwidth of 136%and a high gain of 11.5 dB at 8.5 GHz with an acceptable radiation efficiency of 89%.Furthermore,the gain was improved across the operating band and kept between 8.3 and 11.5 *** proposed antenna was in good agreement between theoretical and experimental results and offered a wide enough bandwidth for UWB and vehicle applications.

A qualitative exploration of Pakistan’s street children, as a consequence of the poverty-disease cycle

Background:Street children are a global phenomenon,with an estimated population of around 150 million across the *** children include those who work on the streets but retain their family contacts,and also those who practically live on the streets and have no or limited family *** Pakistan,many children are forced to work on the streets due to health-related events occurring at home which require children to play a financially productive role from an early *** explanatory framework adapted from the poverty-disease cycle has been used to elaborate these ***:This study is a qualitative study,and involved 19 in-depth interviews and two key informant interviews,conducted in Rawalpindi,Pakistan,from February to May *** data was audio taped and *** themes were identified and built *** respondents were contacted through a gatekeeper ex-street child who was a member of the street children ***:We asked the children to describe their life *** stories led us to the finding that street children are always forced to attain altered social roles because health-related problems,poverty,and large family sizes leave them no choice but to enter the workforce and earn their *** also gathered information regarding high-risk practices and increased risks of sexual and substance abuse,based on the street children’s increased *** children face the issue of social exclusion because diseases and poverty push them into a life full of risks and hazards;a life which also confines their social role in the ***:The street child community in Pakistan is on the *** children are excluded from mainstream society,and the absence of access to education and vocational skills reduces their future *** in mind the implications of health-related events on these children,robust inter-sectoral interventions are required.

Effect of Chloride Concentration on the Corrosion Rate of Maraging Steel

The corrosion behavior of Maraging steel has been studied by using different techniques, including open circuit potential and polarization measurements in addition to microstructure examination such as optical microscopy and XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) investigation. The corrosion behavior of Maraging steel has been examined in sodium chloride solutions with different concentrations from 0.1 M to 2 M. It was found that the corrosion resistance of Maraging steel is inversely proportional with the concentration of sodium chloride solution. The corrosion resistance is directly proportional to the Mo and Ti content in the Maraging steel. Heat treatment of the Maraging steel improved its mechanical properties with no effect on the corrosion behavior as the precipitation of inter-metallic compounds leading to some galvanic action. However, sample IV having lower Mo content than sample V showed after heat treatment an improvement in the corrosion resistance.

Distributed and Cooperative Anomaly Detection Scheme for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Due to their unique characteristics, such as the dynamic changing topology, the absence of central management, the cooperative routing mechanisms, and the resources constraints, Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are relatively vulnerable to both active and passive attacks. In MANET, routing attacks try to disrupt the functions of routing protocol by intentionally or unintentionally dropping packets or propagating faked routing messages. However, due to their computation requirements, the prevention mechanisms are not powerful enough to secure MANET. In this paper, we propose a distributed and cooperative scheme using statistical methods to detect routing attacks in MANETs. Our scheme uses both direct and indirect observations to characterize the behaviors of both neighboring and remote nodes. Simple threshold and Grubb’s Test are utilized to propose our new detection methods. The scheme includes innovative methods to compute our proposed measures, Maximum Accusation Number (MAN) and Accusation Number (AN), which are used to make decision about node’s behavior. Experimental results show that our scheme performs well in detecting anomalous events in routing functions.

Anterior Screw Fixation in Type II Odontoid Fractures: Keys for Better Outcome in Early Experience in Developing Countries

Introduction: Representing up to 15% of cervical injuries, odontoid type II fractures may cause spinal cord compression through atlanto-axial instability. Anterior screw fixation provides direct fracture site stability, high fusion rate and most importantly keeping cervical spine move free. We will highlight success keys in early experience for better outcome. Methods: We operated ten cases with traumatic type II odontoid fractures in neurotrauma unit, Cairo University hospitals from March 2015 till June 2017. Six males and four females were included. Preoperative MRI and dynamic CT were among the assessment criteria. Uni-planner fluoroscopy was used. Results: No post-operative deficit appeared. One screw was inserted in all cases. Immediate and 6 weeks later CT cervical spine showed stable reduced fracture site. Conclusions: Anterior odontoid screw fixation done with prior good selection of the patient and fracture shape is an effective motion preserving surgical option for type II odontoid fractures. Limited resources shouldn’t prevent starting experience especially in developing countries, but larger studies are needed.
