Background and objective The safety of intravenous glycoproteinⅡb/Ⅲa inhibitors (GPI) in elderly patients admitted with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of GPI in elderly patients with ACS. Methods Ninety consecutive patients≥70 years of age admitted to a county hospital between 1999-2004 were included. All patients had typical ACS symptoms along with high-risk markers. Results There was no difference in the TIMI risk score between patients who received GPI (n=47) and those who did not (n=43). Patients who received GPI had a lower creatinine clearance (40 cc/min vs. 47cc/min, p= 0.04). Patients who received GPI had a lower incidence of death, reinfarction or major bleeding (19% vs. 4%, p=0.03). There was no significant difference in major bleeding between the 2 groups. None of the patients in either group developed thrombocytopenia. Conclusion This retrospective small study suggests that the use of GPI in a selected group of elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome may be safe. (J Geriatr Cardiol 2005; 2(4):203-205 )

Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)-based films containing Chinese bayberry tannin(BT)were prepared by cross-linking using glyoxal,glutaraldehyde and dialdehyde starch,*** presence of cross-linkers was evident to promote the transparency and decrease the moisture content of PVA/BT films,while the water solubility stayed almost unchanged in the cross-linked PVA/*** cross-linkers provided promotion of the water vapor per-meability,mechanical property and thermal stability of PVA/BT *** best water vapor barrier capacity was found in case of glutaraldehyde cross-linked PVA/BT film,while the highest tensile strength was encountered in case of glyoxal cross-linked PVA/BT films,compared with the uncross-linked *** scavenging action of the films towards DPPH radical activity was influenced by the nature of each ***,the PVA/AT film cross-linked by glutaraldehyde acquired the lowest radical scavenging activity in a certain time,suggesting that glutaraldehyde decreased the release rate of BT from *** on the experimental data,glutaraldehyde and dialdehyde starch could be more suitable for PVA/BT film preparation since they can promote the intermo-lecular interaction of PVA and BT to a reasonable extent.

A cellular material in the form of 3-layered sandwich structure material was prepared via sole use of mechanical stirring without any use of a foaming agent,while Tween-80 was employed as a foam stabilizer via a developed in-situ mold *** resulting structure displayed a good appearance with no visual *** 3-layered composition of the sandwish structure,“nonporous resin layer-porous foam layer-nonporous resin layer”,was examined in terms of the microstructure,density&density distribution,pulverization ratio,mechanical strength,insulation and flame retardant *** was indicated from the results that the bonding between the resin layer and foam layer was tight,while the tensile rupture always occurred in the porous ***,the density of the sandwich structure material was symmetrical with“saddle”distribution,and a uniform density for any given *** increase in the density at the interface layer provided a good interpretation for the tensile rupture never occurred at the *** brittleness resistance of the developed material was significantly improved,and the pulverization ratio was sharply decreased from 9.93%to 0.31%.The material acquired a thermal conductivity and limiting oxygen index(LOI)of 0.0241 W/m⋅K and 29.92%,respectively,indicating potential use of such materials broadly in fields of insulation and flame retardancy.

New data are presented for the rare-metal bearing A-type granitoids of the AlGhurayyah stock in the northwestern segment of the Arabian Shield, a composite pluton intruding metamorphosed volcano-sedimentary successions of the Silasia Formation. Metals in the granitoids are variably enriched, with up to 1 990 μg/g Zn, 7 680 μg/g Zr, 2 316 μg/g Nb, 232 μg/g Ta, 485 μg/g Hf, 670 μg/g Th, 137 μg/g U and 1 647 μg/g total rare earth elements(REE). The silexite is highly mineralized and yields higher maximum concentrations of several metals than the granitoids, including up to 1 860 μg/g Y, 9 400 μg/g Zr, 878 μg/g Hf, 1 000 μg/g Th, and 2 029 μg/g total REE. The Al-Ghurayyah stock has been assigned to an intraplate setting. Lithospheric delamination led to generation of mantle melts that supplied heat to melt the juvenile crust of the ANS. The fluorine and rare-metal enriched parental magma evolved by fractional crystallization. The quartz-rich silexite, distinct in character from ordinary hydrothermal vein quartz, is inferred to be co-genetic with the granitoids on the basis of their similar REE patterns;it is interpreted as a small volume of residual magma enriched in SiO2, volatiles, and trace metals. Mineralization took place both at the magmatic stage and later during a hydrothermal stage that concentrated these elements to economic grades.

Matrix acidizing is usually conducted on sandstone reservoirs to increase hydrocarbon *** plays an important role in designing acidizing treatments to enhance the production of oil and gas from sandstone *** most common acid in practice to acidize sandstone formation is mud acid after the pre-flush acid *** main aim of the pre-flush acid stage is to dissolve positive ions like calcium,potassium,sodium,etc,which can cause precipitation reactions during the mud acid *** research is aimed to investigate the reaction mechanism of a new pre-flush acid combination(hydrochloric acid and acetic acid)with sandstone *** flooding experiments were performed to react acid with the core samples(6 in×1.5 in)under high pressure and temperature(HPHT)condi-tions(80℃and 1000 psia).Analytical techniques such as Tescan Integrated Mineral Analysis(TIMA)have been used to illustrate the effect of these acids on sandstone *** analysis showed that the new acid combination was effective in dissolving various minerals(ankerite,magnetite)and cations(calcium,magnesium,sodium,and iron).15%HCl proved to be more effective in the dissolution of different particles from sandstone core *** dissolved 32.8%of the initial number of particles present inside the sample while the dissolving power of 5%CH_(3)COOH:10%HCl is 26.7%.Subsequently,the number of pores increased by the application of 15%HCl is 22%while that by 5%CH_(3)COOH:10%HCl is 21.8%.Density analysis showed that both acid combinations removed heavy particles effectively,whereas 5%CH_(3)COOH:10%HCl proved more efficient in dissolving calcium ions which is very important for pre-flush acidizing.

Preparation of Film Based on Polyvinyl Alcohol Modified by Alkaline Starch and Lignin Fiber

This study presents an easily prepared film based on alkaline starch-polyvinyl alcohol hybrid and lignin fiber as an additive(SPL film).The SPL film was prepared under acidic conditions through a polycondensation reaction of PVA and a mixture incorporating alkaline starch and lignin fiber from agriculture or forest *** examination using scanning electron microscopy(SEM)showed that the surface of SPL film was smooth and the lignin fiber had good compatibility within the film *** ionization mass spectroscopy(ESI-MS)and fourier transform infrared(FTIR)investigations indicated that alkaline starch and lignin fiber reacted with PVA under acidic conditions and that–CH_(2)–O–groups were involved in the cross-linking of the SPL *** addition,the SPL film exhibited only 4%light transmittance,which effectively reduces the ultraviolet and visible light(UV-Vis)penetration,along with good performance when exposed to thermal degradation,in which the mass loss reached around 60%at 400℃.More-over,the SPL film acquired excellent tensile strength,which is much higher than that of PVA-lignin(PL)composite film.

Intraluminal stenting versus external ligation of Ahmed glaucoma valve in prevention of postoperative hypotony

AIM:To compare intraluminal stenting and external ligation of Ahmed glaucoma valves(AGV)for refractory glaucoma management and postoperative hypotony ***:This randomized prospective blind study included 30 eyes of 25 patients(age range:44-56y)with refractory *** study was conducted from September 2018 to January *** study included two groups,AGV with intraluminal stenting group(n=15 eyes)and AGV with external ligation group(n=15 eyes).Follow-up period was one year *** primary outcome was intraocular pressure(IOP)and its association with the number of postoperative glaucoma ***≤21 mm Hg without medications indicated complete success while IOP≤21 mm Hg with medications indicated qualified success;and IOP<6 mm Hg was defined as ***:After a year of follow-up,IOP was significantly reduced in the intraluminal stenting group than in the external ligation group(11.67±0.89 vs 14.2±4.0 mm Hg,respectively,P=0.024).Postoperative hypotony was more common in the external ligation group(2 cases,13.33%)than in the intraluminal stenting group(1 case,6.67%).CONCLUSION:Application of intraluminal stenting or external ligation during AGV surgery usually prevents postoperative hypotony(transient and persistent)that occurs in conventional AGV surgery.

Diabetes is one of the four major non-communicable diseases,and appointed by the world health organization as the seventh leading cause of death *** scientists have turned over every rock in the corners of medical sciences in order to come up with better understanding and hence more effective treatments of *** continuous research on the subject has elucidated the role of immune disorders and inflammation as definitive factors in the trajectory of diabetes,assuring that blood glucose adjustments would result in a relief in the systemic stress leading to minimizing *** a parallel basis,microbial infections usually take advantage of immunity disorders and propagate creating a pro-inflammatory environment,all of which can be reversed by antimicrobial *** at the crossroads between diabetes,immunity and infection,we aim in this review at projecting the interplay between immunity and diabetes,shedding the light on the overlapping playgrounds for the activity of some antimicrobial and anti-diabetic ***,we focused on the antidiabetic drugs that can confer antimicrobial or anti-virulence activities.
