Experimental Study on Vortex Growth during the Early Development of Rotating Disks

In previous studies, the effects of radial clearance on the flow of a rotating disk in a cylindrical vessel have been investigated by using rotating disks of different shapes. As a result, different flow phases were observed in each disk due to the difference in disk dimensions. In this study, we focus on the end-face effect and conduct experiments to visualize the vortex growth process and elucidate the generation mechanism of the vortex structure. From the experiment results, at Re = 4000, 7000, and 9000, four types of vortex flow modes appeared in the vortex development process. However, at Re = 4000, only regular 2-cells and regular 4-cells appeared, and at Re = 9000, only mutated 2-cells and mutated 3-cells appeared. In addition, it was found that only one type appeared depending on the rotational ascent time ts. When Re = 4000, the rotational ascent time ts = 0, 2, 7, and 8 was stable at regular 4-cells, while the others were finally stable in regular 2-cells. This study revealed the influence of the acceleration of the rotating disk on the non-unique flows in the cylindrical casing.

Study on Predicting the Mode Development Process of Taylor Vortices Using Convolutional Neural Networks

The study investigated Taylor vortex flow between rotating double cylinders using a convolutional neural network (CNN). By combining numerical results of vortex flow for specific periods after vortex onset, the researchers aimed to determine if mode discrimination was possible in the combined images. They used images taken at various intervals: 20 images at 1 second, 30 images at 1.5 seconds, 40 images at 2 seconds, 50 images at 2.5 seconds, 60 images at 3 seconds, and 67 images at 3.35 seconds after vortex onset. The goal was to compare the accuracy rates in predicting the mode development process of the vortex. The study concluded that the mode development process of the Taylor vortex can be discriminated by combining images taken at specific time intervals after the vortex occurs and training the CNN with these images as teacher data. The results showed that the most efficient prediction of the mode development process was achieved when 50 images taken at 2.5 seconds were used for learning. This highlights the potential of using CNNs in fluid dynamics research, specifically in analyzing and predicting the behavior of vortex flows.

We study the reaction-diffusion Ebola PDE model that consists of equations that govern the evolution of susceptible, in fee ted, recovered and deceased human individuals, as well as Ebola virus pathogens in the environment, with diffusive terms in all except the equation of the deceased human individuals. Under the setting of a spatial domain that is bounded, we prove the global well-posedness of the system;in contrast to the previous work on similar models such as cholera, avian influenza, malaria and dengue fever, diffusion coefficients may be different. Moreover, we derive its basic reproduction number, and under the condition that the diffusion coefficients of the susceptible and infected hosts are same, we prove the global stability of the disease-free-equilibrium, and uniform persistence in cases when the basic reproduction number lies beneath and above one, respectively. Again, we do not require that the diffusion coefficients of the recovered hosts be the same as the diffusion coefficients of the susceptible and infected hosts, in contrast to previous work on other models of infectious diseases. Another technical difficulty in our model is that the solution semiflow is not compact due to the lack of diffusion in the equation of the deceased human individuals;we overcome this difficulty using functional analysis techniques concerning Kura to wski measure of non-compactness.

Surgeons may be severely criticized from the perspective of evidence-based medicine because the majority of surgical publications appear not to be convincing. In the top nine surgical journals in 1996, half of the 175 publications refer to pilot studies lacking a control group, 18% to animal experiments, and only 5% to randomized controlled trials (RCT). There are five levels of clinical evidence:level 1 (randomized controlled trial), level 2 (prospective concurrent cohort study), level 3 (retrospective historical cohort study), level 4 (pre-post study), and level 5 (case report). Recently, a Japanese evidence-based guideline for the surgical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was made by a committee (Chairman, Professor Makuuchi and five members). We searched the literature using the Medline Dialog System with four Keywords:HCC, surgery, English papers, in the last 20 years. A total of 915 publications were identified systematically reviewed. At the first selection (in which surgery-dominant papers were selected), 478 papers survived. In the second selection (clearly concluded papers), 181 papers survived. In the final selection (clinically significant papers), 100 papers survived. The evidence level of the 100 surviving papers is shown here:level-1 papers (13%), level-2 papers (11%), level-3 papers (52%), and level-4 papers (24%);therefore, there were 24% prospective papers and 76% retrospective papers. Here, we present a part of the guideline on the five main surgical issues:indication to operation, operative procedure, peri-operative care, prognostic factor, and post-operative adjuvant therapy.

The thermal fatigue behaviour of an air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coating was investigated. And also the interfacial strengths of thermal barrier coated specimens subjected to thermal fatigue, as well as a retired TBC vane were also evaluated by means of an instrumented indentation machine. The results indicated that, （1） the TGO grew at the interface during thermal fatigue cycle as a function of the exposure time at elevated temperature; （2） the microcracks were initiated in the top coating and at the interface after thermal cycle tests; （3） the interfacial strength of TBC, which was evaluated by the indentation method, increased with the thermal cycles; （4） the interfacial strength of the retired TBC vane was almost equal with that of the as-sprayed TBC specimen.

Multi-walled carbon nanotube networks were confirmed to exhibit a linear decrease in resistivity with increasing temperature from 100 to above 400 *** linearity was explained using a defect scattering model that involved Friedel oscillations(that is,electron-electron interactions).The applicability of this model,which was originally proposed for graphene,to carbon nanotubes was assessed based on a comparison of various experimental *** in the slopes of the resistivity-temperature plots following the introduction of defects,as well as an effect of charge concentration on the slope were key predictions of this *** results obtained from few-walled carbon nanotube networks are also *** the literature,linear resistivity-temperature plots were obtained from other graphene derivatives,indicating that the linearity originates from the hexagonal symmetry of these *** present work also indicated a relationship between the appearance of linearity and negative magnetoresistance above 100 *** on a mechanism incorporating scattering in association with Friedel oscillations and conventional electron conduction models,the universality of resistivity-temperature plots obtained from carbon nanotube networks is introduced.
