Flow and geochemical modeling of drainage from Tomitaka mine,Miyazaki,Japan

The chemistry and flow of water in the abandoned Tomitaka mine of Miyazaki, western Japan were investigated. This mine is located in a non-ferrous metal deposit and acid mine drainage issues from it. The study was undertaken to estimate the quantities of mine drainage that needs to be treated in order to avoid acidification of local rivers, taking into account seasonal variations in rainfall. Numerical models aimed to reproduce observed water levels and fluxes and chemical variations of groundwater and mine drainage. Rock–water interactions that may explain the observed variations in water chemistry are proposed. The results show that：（1） rain water infiltrates into the deeper bedrock through a highly permeable zone formed largely by stopes that are partially filled with spoil from excavations（ore minerals and host rocks）;（2） the water becomes acidic（p H from 3 to 4） as dissolved oxygen oxidizes pyrite;（3） along the flow path through the rocks, the redox potential of the water becomes reducing, such that pyrite becomes stable and p H of the mine drainage becomes neutral; and（4） upon leaving the mine, the drainage becomes acidic again due to oxidation of pyrite in the rocks. The present numerical model with considering of the geochemical characteristics can simulate the main variations in groundwater flow and water levels in and around the Tomitaka mine, and apply to the future treatment of the mine drainage.

Absence of asymptomatic unruptured renal artery pseudoaneurysm on contrast-enhanced computed tomography after robot-assisted partial nephrectomy without parenchymal renorrhaphy

Objective:To assess the incidence of asymptomatic unruptured renal artery pseudoaneurysm(RAP)on contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CE-CT)after robot-assisted partial nephrectomy(RAPN)without parenchymal renorrhaphy.Methods:From May 2016 to December 2017,78 patients underwent RAPN for renal tumors.Inner suture was performed in the opened collecting system or renal sinus,whereas parenchymal renorrhaphy was not.For hemostasis,the soft coagulation system was used,and absorbable hemostats were placed on the resection bed.CE-CT was carried out within 7 days after surgery.Data on these patients were prospectively collected.A single radiologist determined the diagnosis of RAP.Results:Median(range)data were as follows:Patient age,65(19-82)years;radiographic tumor size,30(12-95)mm;operating time,166(102-294)min;warm ischemic time,16(7-67)min;and blood loss,15(0-4450)mL.One patient(1.6%)required a perioperative blood transfusion.No patient required conversion to open surgery or nephrectomy.CE-CT was carried out at median 6(3-7)days after surgery.CE-CT showed no RAP development in all 61 patients.Urinary leakage was not observed.One patient had acute cholecystitis,a postoperative complication classified as Clavien-Dindo grade higher than 3,which was treated with cholecystectomy.Positive surgical margin was identified in four patients(6.6%).Conclusion:RAPN using soft coagulation and absorbable hemostats without renorrhaphy appears to be feasible and safe.Our technique could eliminate the risk of RAP.

Diagnostic ability of multi-detector spiral computed tomography for pathological lymph node metastasis of advanced gastric cancer

BACKGROUND The reliability of preoperative nodal diagnosis of advanced gastric cancer by multi-detector spiral computed tomography(MDCT)is still unclear.AIM To examine the diagnostic ability of MDCT more precisely by using data on intranodal pathological metastatic patterns.METHODS A total of 108 patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent MDCT and curative gastrectomy at Kanazawa Medical University Hospital were enrolled in this study.The nodal sizes measured on computed tomography(CT)images were compared with the pathology results.A receiver-operating characteristic curve was constructed,from which the critical value(CV)was calculated by using the data of the first 69 patients retrospectively.By using the CV,sensitivity and specificity were calculated with prospectively collected data from 39 consecutive patients.This enabled a more precise one-to-one correspondence of lymph nodes between CT and pathological examination by using the size data of lymph node mapping.The intranodal pathological metastatic patterns were classified into the following four types:Small nodular,peripheral,large nodular,and diffuse.RESULTS Although all the cases were clinically suspected as having metastasis,81 had lymph node metastasis and 27 had no metastasis.The number of dissected,detected on CT,and metastatic nodes were,4241,897,and 801,respectively.The CV obtained from the receiver-operating characteristic was 7.6 mm for the long axis.The sensitivity was 91.4%and the specificity was 47.3%in the prospective phase.The large nodular and diffuse metastases were easy to diagnose becausemetastatic nodes with a large axis often exhibit these forms.CONCLUSION The ability of MDCT to contribute to a nodal diagnosis of advanced gastric cancer was examined prospectively with precise size data from node mapping,using a CV of 7.6 mm for the long axis that was calculated from the retrospectively collected data.The sensitivity was as high as 91%,and would be improved when referring to the enhanced patterns.However,its specificity was as l

Efficacy and HCC development after DAA therapy for patients with chronic hepatitis C:a single center retrospective cohort study

Aim: The development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is reduced after interferon based treatment in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC). A new therapy using direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) has been widely applied since 2014 for CHC. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy, safety and development of HCC after DAA treatment. Methods: The authors enrolled 33 consecutive patients who were treated with DAA for CHC at the hospital between January 2015 and March 2016. The laboratory data were collected at the start and 24 weeks after DAA therapy. Results: The authors analyzed 33 patients (18 male, 15 female, mean age of 68-year-old). The hepatic C virus genotypes were type 1 (27 patients) and type 2 (6 patients). The number of patients treated with sofosbuvir (SOF) +ledipasvir, daclatasvir + asunaprevir and SOF + ribavirin was 14, 13 and 6, respectively. The sustained virological response (SVR24) rate was 100%. Aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and FIB4-index were significantly decreased after SVR24. Adverse effects were observed in 9 patients (anemia, 5;liver function test disorder, 2;sarcoidosis, 1;pruritus, 1). With regard to HCC development, one elderly patient (3.0%) had multiple HCC recurrence after SVR24. Conclusion: DAA therapy achieved a high SVR24 rate with a good serological response. However, one patient had multiple HCC recurrence. These findings indicate that careful follow-up may be essential after DAA therapy.

Efficacy of the fat-dissociation method for nodal harvesting in gastric cancer

BACKGROUND There is an increased need for accurate staging for gastric cancer treatment.Consequently, it is necessary to carefully examine all dissected lymph nodes for precise staging. Recently, the fat-dissociation method has been developed as a quick and accurate method for harvesting dissected lymph nodes of colorectal cancer cases.AIM To investigate the usefulness of the fat-dissociation method for harvesting dissected lymph nodes of gastric cancer cases.METHODS Fifty-six resected specimens from gastric cancer patients who underwent standard curative gastrectomy and lymph node dissection at our hospital were used. Group 2 lymph nodes were separated from each specimen, and the remaining adipose tissue containing the group 1 lymph nodes was used. Some resected specimens were subjected to the fat-dissociation method. One vial of Imofully~? was dissolved in 50 m L of saline and injected into the tissue. The tissue was incubated for 1 h and the dissolved fat was removed. Subsequently, the nodes were identified, picked up with scissors, and mapped. The number of nodes in each lymphatic compartment and duration of lymph node harvest and mapping were compared.RESULTS The fat-dissociation method was used for 24 samples, while the conventional dissection method was used for 32 samples. The total number of harvested lymph nodes was 45.9 in the fat dissociation group and 44.3 in the control group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups. There were also no significant differences in the number of lymph nodes between the two groups based on a comparison of the lymphatic compartments. However, the total median duration of the fat-dissociation method was 38.2 min, reflecting a reduced duration of approximately 60 min compared to the control group.CONCLUSION Based on our results, the fat-dissociation method is effective in shortening the duration of lymph node harvest in gastric cancer surgery.

Material Mechanical Properties Necessary for the Structural Intervention of Concrete Structures

Structural intervention involves the restoration and/or upgrading of the mechanical performances of structures. In addition to concrete and steel, which are typical materials for concrete structures, various ber-reinforced polymers (FRPs), cementitious materials with bers, polymers, and adhesives are often applied for structural intervention. In order to predict structural performance, it is necessary to develop a generic method that is applicable to not only to steel, but also to other materials. Such a generic model could provide information on the mechanical properties required to improve the structural performance. External bonding, which is a typical scheme for structural intervention, is not applied for new structures. It is necessary to clarify material properties and structural details in order to achieve better bonding strength at the interface between the substrate concrete and an externally bonded material. This paper presents the mechanical properties of substrate concrete and relevant intervention material for the fol- lowing purposes: ① to achieve better shear strength and ultimate deformation of a member after struc- tural intervention;and ② to achieve better debonding strength for external bonding. This paper concludes that some of the mechanical properties and structural details for intervention materials that are necessary for improvement in mechanical performance in structures with structural intervention are new, and differ from those of structures without intervention. For example, high strength and stiff- ness are important properties for materials in structures without structural intervention, whereas high fracturing strain and low stiffness are important properties for structural intervention materials.

Immunolocalization of a Normal Wood Specific Pectin Methylesterase (CoPME) and Quantification of PME Gene Expression in Differentiating Xylem of <i>Chamaecyparis obtusa</i>

The transverse section of compression wood tracheids has a circular shape and intercellular spaces. The cause has not been determined yet;however, we hypothesized that peeling of the cell wall adhesion would cause cellular intervals, resulting in circularity of the transverse section of tracheids. Homogalacturonan, a type of pectin, functions in cell wall adhesion. Further, pectin methylesterase (PME) is involved in functionalization of homogalacturonan. We quantitated PME gene expression levels in differentiating xylem cells using different degrees of compression wood samples and examined the correlation with circularity of the transverse section of tracheids in each sample. We found that lower gene expression level of the sample corresponded with increasing circularity of the transverse section of tracheids. It is considered that the transverse section of compression wood tracheids becomes circular by suppression of PME gene expression during differentiation. Further, we observed the normal wood specific pectin methylesterase (CoPME) localization in differentiating xylem tracheids by immunolabeling. Labels localized at the entire perimeter of the compound middle lamella in normal wood, whereas sparse labeling was found in compression wood. It suggests that cell walls adhere at sites of CoPME function in differentiating xylem tracheids, but there is inadequate adhesion between cell walls where CoPME does not function. At the end of the expansion zone, the volume of the cell decreases due to a decrease in the turgor pressure of the tracheid. Further, due to moisture shrinkage of the tracheid, the adhesion begins to peel off in places of inadequate adhesion between cell walls, resulting in cell gaps and, thereby, generating a circular cell shape of cell wall formation in compression wood.

In this work, flexural properties and failure behavior of unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 (CF/Nylon 6) and epoxy resin (CF/ Epoxy) laminates were investigated through three-point bending test. The mechanical properties and failure behavior of 0 and 90 degree CF/Nylon 6 and CF/Epoxy laminates were discussed based on the fiber volume fraction, fiber distribution, void content, interfacial properties, transversal tensile strength and fracture toughness. The effects of fiber volume fraction, fiber distribution, void content and their hybrid effect on the flexural properties were investigated. Step-by-step observation and scanning electron microscope observation of laminates after flexural tests were employed to analyze the fracture process.

Levovist ultrasonography imaging in intracystic hemorrhage of simple liver cyst

The differential diagnosis between intracystic hemorrhage and cystadenocarcinoma of the liver is often difficult even with the use of various imaging modalities. A 73-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with the complaint of right upper quadrant pain. Ultrasonography (US) demonstrated a heterogeneous echogenic cyst measuring 11 cm × 8 cm in size in S2 of the liver, indicated intracystic hemorrhage of simple liver cyst or cystadenocarcinoma, but the differential diagnosis was considerably difficult. Levovist (Schering, Berlin, Germany) US revealed no enhancement of the intracystic structures, suggesting a clot in the case of intracystic hemorrhage. An operation was performed and the resected lesion showed a solitary benign liver cyst, measuring 5.5 cm × 4.7 cm × 8.5 cm containing a large blood clot. The patient had an uneventful recovery after the surgery. Levovist US may play an important role in discrimination between intracystic hemorrhage of simple hepatic cysts and cystadenocarcinoma of the liver.
