Development of Hydropriming Techniques for Sowing Seeds of Upland Rice in Uganda

Hydropriming is one of the presoaking, seed priming technique that allows seeds to imbibe water and go through the first stage of germination but does not allow radicle appearance. After water imbibition, seeds are dried to their original weight. This technique is used to help crops overcome environment stress. This study aims to assess the morphological traits of farmer’s seeds for developing priming treatments so as to develop appropriate methods to maximize the effect of hydropriming. We collected farmer’s samples of rice sowing seeds grown indifferent regions of Ugandan. For each sample, distribution of the seed density in percentages was calculated. Secondly, germination tests as per seed density levels and as per farmer’s seed samples were conducted for deciding appropriate priming treatment. Finally, wooden boxes experiment was conducted to confirm priming effects. As the result, it was observed that the difference in seed density levels affects the quality of farmer’s seeds, as observed in the case of NERICA4. If the radicle appears during soaking period, the newly developed radicle dies during the seed drying process in the hydropriming treatment. Seed germination was observed after 24 h of sowing at room temperature, even at a seed density level of 1.17, which is vigorous for germination. Consequently, farmer’s seeds were soaked for 24 h to promote water absorption and activate metabolic pathways and to avoid germination failure when seeds are dried to their initial weight. After hydropriming treatment, plant growth was improved. Alternatively, significant difference was not observed in the mean emergence time between hydroprimed and unprimed seeds. These results suggest that priming the seeds by soaking for 24 h and drying to their initial weight considerably affects initial growth after emergence under dry soil condition.

Controllable alignment of elongated microorganisms in 3D microspace using electrofluidic devices manufactured by hybrid femtosecond laser microfabrication

This paper presents a simple technique to fabricate new electrofluidic devices for the three-dimensional(3D)manipulation of microorganisms by hybrid subtractive and additive femtosecond(fs)laser microfabrication(fs laser-assisted wet etching of glass followed by water-assisted fs laser modification combined with electroless metal plating).The technique enables the formation of patterned metal electrodes in arbitrary regions in closed glass microfluidic channels,which can spatially and temporally control the direction of electric fields in 3D microfluidic *** fabricated electrofluidic devices were applied to nanoaquariums to demonstrate the 3D electro-orientation of Euglena gracilis(an elongated unicellular microorganism)in microfluidics with high controllability and *** particular,swimming Euglena cells can be oriented along the z-direction(perpendicular to the device surface)using electrodes with square outlines formed at the top and bottom of the channel,which is quite useful for observing the motions of cells parallel to their swimming ***,z-directional electric field control ensured efficient observation of manipulated cells on the front side(45 cells were captured in a minute in an imaging area of~160×120μm),resulting in a reduction of the average time required to capture the images of five Euglena cells swimming continuously along the z-direction by a factor of~43 compared with the case of no electric *** addition,the combination of the electrofluidic devices and dynamic imaging enabled observation of the flagella of Euglena cells,revealing that the swimming direction of each Euglena cell under the electric field application was determined by the initial body angle.

How are multiple satellites seen from the ground? Relative apparent motion and formation stabilization

This paper answers how multiple satellites are seen from the ground. This question is inspired by space-advertising, a public exhibition in the night sky using a dot matrix of satellites that are bright enough to be seen by the naked eye. Thus, it is important for space advertisement that the specific dot matrix is seen. Moreover, the stability of the dot matrix during a visible span is very valuable. To stabilize the dot matrix, this study formulates an apparent position of a dot from a representative dot seen from the ground. The formulation, linear functions of a set of relative orbital elements, reveals the appearance of the dot matrix. The proposed relative variable in the formulation drives the instability of the dot matrix, thereby revealing an initial stable configuration of deputies from a chief. The arbitrary dot matrix designed using the configuration is stable even at low elevations without orbital control during the visible span.

Determination of the free lunar libration modes from ephemeris DE430

The Moon’s physical librations have been extensively studied, and elaborate researches have been developed for the purpose of deriving accurate modes of free librations. Our motivation comes from the Planetary and Lunar Ephemeris DE430 by JPL/NASA, which was created in April 2013,and is reported to be the most accurate lunar ephemeris today using the data from Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory（GRAIL）. Therefore, the residuals after fitting the model have reduced owing to improvement in the libration models, and the free librations embedded in the Euler angles have also improved. We use Fourier analysis to extract the approximate frequencies from DE430 and then a quadratic interpolation method is used to determine higher accuracy frequencies. With the frequencies,the linear least-squares fitting method is employed to fit the lunar physical librations to DE430. From this analysis we identified the three modes of free physical librations, and estimated the amplitudes as 1.471′′in longitude, 0.025′′in latitude and 8.19′′× 3.31′′for the wobble, with the respective periods of1056.16, 8806.9 and 27262.99 d. Since the free librations damp with time, they require recent excitation or a continuous stimulating mechanism in order to sustain.

Applications of same-beam VLBI in the orbit determination of multi-spacecrafts in a lunar sample-return mission

Same-beam VLBI means that two spacecrafts with small separation angles that transmit multi-frequency signals specially designed are observed simultaneously through the main beam of receiving antennas. In same-beam VLBI,the differential phase delay between the two spacecrafts and the two receiving antennas can be obtained within a small error of several picoseconds. As a successful application,the short-arc orbit determination of several hours for Rstar and Vstar,which are two small sub-spacecrafts of SELENE,has been much improved by using the same-beam VLBI data together with the Doppler and range data. The long-arc orbit determination of several days has also been accomplished within an error of about 10 m with the same-beam VLBI data incorporated. These results show the value of the same-beam VLBI for the orbit determination of multi-spacecrafts. This paper introduces the same-beam VLBI and Doppler observations of SELENE and the orbit determination results. In addition,this paper introduces how to use the same-beam VLBI for a lunar sample-return mission,which usually consists of an orbiter,a lander and a return unit. The paper also offers the design for the onboard radio sources in the lunar sample-return mission,and introduces applications of S-band multi-frequency same-beam VLBI in lunar gravity exploration and applications during all stages in the position/orbit determinations such as orbiting,landing,sampling,ascending,and docking.

AIM: To assess the utility and safety of single-operator cholangiopancreatoscopy(SOCPS) using the Spy Glass system in widespread clinical application for biliary and pancreatic ***: This study was a prospective case series conducted in 20 referral centers in Japan. There were 148 patients who underwent SOCPS; 124 for biliary diseases and 24 for pancreatic diseases. The attempted interventions were SOCPS examination, SOCPS-directed tissue sampling, and therapy for stone removal, among others. The main outcomes were related to the procedure success rate in terms of visualizing the target lesions, SOCPS-directed adequate tissue sampling, and complete stone removal. RESULTS: A total of 148 patients were enrolled for the diagnosis of indeterminate biliary and pancreatic lesions or treatment of biliary and pancreatic disease. The overall procedure success rate of visualizing the target lesions was 91.2%(135/148). The overall procedural success rates of visualizing the target lesions of diagnostic SOCPS in the bile duct and pancreatic duct were 95.5%(84/89) and 88.2%(15/17), respectively. Diagnosis: the overall adequate tissue for histologic examination was secured in 81.4% of the 86 patients who underwent biopsy under SOCPS(bile duct, 60/75, 80.0%; pancreatic duct, 10/11, 90.9%). The accuracy of histologic diagnosis using SOCPS-directed biopsies in indeterminate bile duct lesions was 70.7%(53/75). In the pancreatic duct, the accuracy of SOCPS visual impression of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm was 87.5%(14/16). Stone therapy: complete biliary and pancreatic stone clearance combined with SOCPS-directed stone therapy using electrohydraulic lithotripsy or laser lithotripsy was achieved in 74.2%(23/31) and 42.9%(3/7) of the patients, respectively.
