Limb-loaded walking using ankle weights has been widely applied to increase exercise intensity in older adults.Examining changes in the activation pattern between proximal(RFP)and distal(RFD)regions of the rectus femoris(RF)muscle is key to clarifying gait deficits in older adults.The aim of this study was to determine regional neuromuscular regulation within the RF muscle following three-month limb-loaded walking in older adults.The study participants were 22 healthy older adults(696.3 years)who walked at least 160 min per month.Surface electromyography(EMG)and motion capture were used to measure the neuromuscular activities of RFP and RFD and generate kinematic data on the left lower extremity on walking for 240 s at the preferred gait speed on a treadmill at pre-and post-intervention,respectively.Averaged rectified values(ARV)of RFP and RFD were normalized by maximum values of ARV during a gait cycle within ten consecutive gait cycles.Normalized ARV of RFP was greater than RFD at 30%–40%and 70%–90%of the gait cycle and hip joint flexion at 0%–100%,and the walking speed and swing timing at post-were greater than at pre-intervention(p0.05).The activity of RFP compared with RFD and hip joint flexion were increased following limb-loaded walking intervention in older adults.

Abemaciclib-induced lung damage leading to discontinuation in brain metastases from breast cancer: A case report

BACKGROUND This case report addresses the dearth of effective therapeutic interventions for central nervous system metastases in patients with HER2-negative breast cancer.It presents a unique case of a woman with estrogen receptor-positive,HER2-negative breast cancer who developed brain metastasis.The report highlights her initial favorable response to abemaciclib and letrozole therapy prior to the discon-tinuation due to drug-induced lung damage(DILD).CASE SUMMARY In this comprehensive case summary,we present the clinical course of a woman in her 60s,who 11 years following primary breast cancer surgery,was diagnosed with multiple brain metastases.As a third-line systemic therapy,she underwent treatment with abemaciclib and letrozole.This treatment approach yielded a near-partial response in her metastatic brain lesions.However,abemaciclib adminis-tration ceased due to the emergence of DILD,as confirmed by a computed tomography scan.The DILD improved after 1 mo of cessation.Despite ongoing therapeutic efforts,the patient’s condition progressively deteriorated,ultimately resulting in death due to progression of the brain metastases.CONCLUSION This case underscores the challenge of managing adverse events in responsive brain metastasis patients,given the scarcity of therapeutic options.

Magnesium(Mg)alloys can be regarded as the most promising biodegradable implant materials for orthopedic and stent applications due to their good biocompatibility and low Young’s modulus which is near to that of natural bone.However,its applicability is hindered because it exhibits a high corrosion rate in the physiological environments.In this work,we fabricated Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe bulk metallic glass composites via spark plasma sintering(SPS).We studied the influence of different contents of Fe on the properties of the composites.The results indicated that Fe was uniformly distributed on the surface of Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4) metallic glass(MG)as a second phase,which led to an improvement in the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.The standard potential of Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe bulk metallic glass(BMG)composites increased as compared to Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4),while their mechanical strength improved from 355 MPa to 616 MPa.Furthermore,cytotoxicity was investigated via the CCK-8 assay and calcein-AM staining,which revealed that the extraction mediums diluted 6 times(EM×6)of the Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4) and Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe did not cause cell toxicity on day 3 and 5,while the EM×6 of the Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4) showed cytotoxicity on day 1,3 and 5.Thus,Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe BMG composites exhibit significant potential for fabricating implants with good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

Pharmacological characteristics of Kampo medicine as a mixture of constituents and ingredients

Herbal medicine in Japan is termed as Kampo medicine, which is derived from traditional Chinese medicine. Shakuyakukanzoto （Shao-Yao-Gan-Cao-Tang） as a kind of Kampo formulations is composed of just two components; Paeoniae Radix and Glycyrrhizae Radix, which produced marked relaxation of intestinal tract. Mokuboito （Mu-Fang-Ji-Tang） inhibited cardiac ionic channel currents, and as a mixture also produced great vasodilatation. Sinomenine （a main ingredient of Mokuboito） as a single compound also caused the vasodilatation, but decreased it along with ageing. Gypsum containing in Mokuboito and Chotosan （Diao-Teng-San） caused more marked effects, as compared with those without Gypsum. On the other hand, Rokumigan （Liu-Wei-Wan）, Hachimijiogan （Ba-Wei-Di-Huang-Wan） and Goshajinkigan （Niu- Che-Shen-Qi-Wan） increase in order the number of contained ingredients. The formulations with more herbs （ingredients） produced much more effective actions on rat aorta, presumably due to compensation of the decline of pharmacological sensitivity with ageing. Thus, there are some important differences between single chemical drugs and mixture drugs with many ingredients. The effects of Kampo medicine （mixture） are never just a sum of each effect induced by a lot of in qredients. For elder persons, furthermore, Kampo medicine exerts more effective actions.

A Hybrid Vision Method for Autonomous Guided Vehicle Navigation

For the autonomous guided vehicle (AGV) used mainly in unfixed work fields, a machine vision method was proposed for the navigation system, in which a series of navigation-signs are placed along the travel route. The navigation system detects and recognizes these signs, and accordingly informs the travel control system. In order for the navigation to have balanced ability of 1) covering a large area and 2) recognizing details of the sign, the proposed vision method was designed to be a hybrid one, using both the stereo vision and the traditional 2D template matching. The former implemented a coarse recognition function for above 1), and the later implemented a fine recognition function for above 2). The results from the coarse recognition were used in the fine recognition for the gaze control to input suitable 2D image of the signs. Experiments on a prototype system show the feasibility of the proposed hybrid method in achieving the objective specifications for a typical AGV.

Air pollution adversely affects skin,leading to skin inflammation and premature skin aging.Plant derived antioxidant compounds have been considered to be promising in discovery of effective agents for the protection of skin from the damage by air pollutants.Our previous studies demonstrated that Averrhoa carambola fruit(known as star fruit)is rich in flavonoid C-glycosides with unique structures and potent antioxidant activity.Thus,the star fruit extract(SFE)and main flavonoid C-glycoside components,carambolasides I,J,and P(1-3),carambolaflavone B(4),and isovitexin 2″-O-α-l-rhamnoside(5),were investigated for the activity against air pollutant stress in human epidermis.As a result,SFE and compounds 1-5 exhibited significant inhibitory activity against protein carbonylation in oxidative-stressed stratum corneum with the best activity being shown by compound 3.SFE and compounds 2-5 were also active against engine exhaust-induced protein carbonylation in stratum corneum.When further evaluated,SFE and com-pound 3 significantly inhibited gene expression of the key inflammation mediators IL-1αand COX-2 in PM-stressed keratinocytes.The results indicated that SFE and the flavonoid C-glycosides are potentially effective against air pollutant-induced skin inflammation and premature aging.

BACKGROUND Acute portal vein thrombosis(PVT)with bowel necrosis is a fatal condition with a 50%-75%mortality rate.This report describes the successful endovascular treatment(EVT)of two patients with severe PVT.CASE SUMMARY The first patient was a 22-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain lasting 3 d.The second patient was a 48-year-old man who presented with acute abdominal pain.Following contrast-enhanced computed tomography,both patients were diagnosed with massive PVT extending to the splenic and superior mesenteric veins.Hybrid treatment(simultaneous necrotic bowel resection and EVT)was performed in a hybrid operating room(OR).EVTs,including aspiration thrombectomy,catheter-directed thrombolysis(CDT),and continuous CDT,were performed via the ileocolic vein under laparotomy.The portal veins were patent 4 and 6 mo posttreatment in the 22-year-old and 48-year-old patients,respectively.CONCLUSION Hybrid necrotic bowel resection and transileocolic EVT performed in a hybrid OR is effective and safe.

Obesity and its related metabolic disorders are serious health problems worldwide,and lead to various healthrelated complications,including cancer.Among human cancers,hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the most common malignancies affected by obesity.Therefore,obesity and its related disorders might be a key target for the prevention of HCC.Recently,new research indicates that the molecular abnormalities associated with obesity,including insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia,chronic inflammation,adipokine imbalance,and oxidative stress,are possible molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of obesityrelated hepatocarcinogenesis.Green tea catechins and branched-chain amino acids,both of which are classified as nutraceutical agents,have been reported to prevent obesity-related HCC development by improving metabolic abnormalities.The administration of acyclic retinoid,a pharmaceutical agent,reduced the incidence of HCC in obese and diabetic mice,and was also associated with improvements in insulin resistance and chronic inflammation.In this article,we review the detailed molecular mechanisms that link obesity to the development of HCC in obese individuals.We also summarize recent evidence from experimental and clinical studies using either nutraceutical or pharmaceutical agents,and suggest that nutraceutical and pharmaceutical approaches targeting metabolic abnormalities might be a promising strategy to prevent the development of obesity-related HCC.

Effects of Cr and Cr/Mn Combined Additions on Semi-Solid Microstructures of Al-Mg-Si Alloys Produced by D-SSF Process

The effects of Cr and Cr/Mn combined additions on the semi-solid microstructure of wrought Al-Mg-Si alloys are investigated.In the Cr-added alloy,the Al-7Cr compound is formed with homogeneously distributed in theα-Al matrix after homogenization.Both of the Al-7Cr andα-Al-（12）Mn3-Si-2 dispersiod particles are found in the homogenized microstructure of the Cr/Mn-added alloy.In the semi-solid microstructures,the smallestα-Al grains are obtained in the 60% cold-rolled alloys.After prolonged holding time,theα-Al grain size of the Cr/Mn-added alloy is smaller than that of the Cr-added alloy.Heavy deformation by cold-rolling accelerates spheroidization of theα-Al grains.The D-SSF process is found to be useful to modify the microstructures of both the Cr-added and Cr/Mn-added Al-Mg-Si alloys.

Lanthanum phosphate was prepared in the presence of citric acid and stearic acid under methanolic conditions at pH 4.5 and pH 7, respectively. The samples obtained were intensively characterized using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm study, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, and Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） analysis . The as-synthesized samples prepared at pH 4.5 showed lamellar mesostruroned form with high crystallinity. Results showed that the pore size and pore volume changed when the materials were prepared under different pH conditions. Morphology of the samples was observed by using TEM, which showed that the samples possessed relatively small particles closely packed together. The as-synthesized samples were investigated using FTIR, and the mesopore formation mechanism was discussed.
