Mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of powder metallurgical Mg-Zn-Ca/Fe bulk metal glass composites for biomedical application

Magnesium(Mg)alloys can be regarded as the most promising biodegradable implant materials for orthopedic and stent applications due to their good biocompatibility and low Young’s modulus which is near to that of natural ***,its applicability is hindered because it exhibits a high corrosion rate in the physiological *** this work,we fabricated Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe bulk metallic glass composites via spark plasma sintering(SPS).We studied the influence of different contents of Fe on the properties of the *** results indicated that Fe was uniformly distributed on the surface of Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4) metallic glass(MG)as a second phase,which led to an improvement in the corrosion resistance and mechanical *** standard potential of Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe bulk metallic glass(BMG)composites increased as compared to Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4),while their mechanical strength improved from 355 MPa to 616 ***,cytotoxicity was investigated via the CCK-8 assay and calcein-AM staining,which revealed that the extraction mediums diluted 6 times(EM×6)of the Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4) and Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe did not cause cell toxicity on day 3 and 5,while the EM×6 of the Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4) showed cytotoxicity on day 1,3 and ***,Mg_(66)Zn_(30)Ca_(4)/Fe BMG composites exhibit significant potential for fabricating implants with good mechanical strength and corrosion resistance.

Surface Modification of PEEK and Its Osteoconductivity and Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is known as one of the “super-engineering plastics” and is used as an intervertebral disk spacer in the body. PEEK has a hydrophobic surface (water contact angle (WCA) > 80°) and high chemical resistance, and it is thus difficult to perform any surface treatment, such as hydrophilization. In this study, we aimed to form a hydrophilic surface on PEEK without coating layers by using hydroprocessing (aqueous solution processing), and we examined the osteoconductivity and anti-inflammatory properties of surface-treated PEEK in vivo compared with Ti implants. The WCA value of PEEK reached ~20° using a combination of immersion in a solution of >16.2 M H2SO4 and ultraviolet irradiation (172 nm). In in vivo testing, the hydrophilization of PEEK by surface modification without a coating layer improved the osteoconductivity and anti-inflammatory properties. The relationship between the bone-implant contact ratio and the WCA values of the surface-modified PEEK agreed well with that of the surface-treated Ti.

The effects of Cr and Cr/Mn combined additions on the semi-solid microstructure of wrought Al-Mg-Si alloys are *** the Cr-added alloy,the Al-7Cr compound is formed with homogeneously distributed in theα-Al matrix after *** of the Al-7Cr andα-Al-（12）Mn3-Si-2 dispersiod particles are found in the homogenized microstructure of the Cr/Mn-added *** the semi-solid microstructures,the smallestα-Al grains are obtained in the 60% cold-rolled *** prolonged holding time,theα-Al grain size of the Cr/Mn-added alloy is smaller than that of the Cr-added *** deformation by cold-rolling accelerates spheroidization of theα-Al *** D-SSF process is found to be useful to modify the microstructures of both the Cr-added and Cr/Mn-added Al-Mg-Si alloys.

Pharmacological characteristics of Kampo medicine as a mixture of constituents and ingredients

Herbal medicine in Japan is termed as Kampo medicine, which is derived from traditional Chinese medicine. Shakuyakukanzoto （Shao-Yao-Gan-Cao-Tang） as a kind of Kampo formulations is composed of just two components; Paeoniae Radix and Glycyrrhizae Radix, which produced marked relaxation of intestinal tract. Mokuboito （Mu-Fang-Ji-Tang） inhibited cardiac ionic channel currents, and as a mixture also produced great vasodilatation. Sinomenine （a main ingredient of Mokuboito） as a single compound also caused the vasodilatation, but decreased it along with ageing. Gypsum containing in Mokuboito and Chotosan （Diao-Teng-San） caused more marked effects, as compared with those without Gypsum. On the other hand, Rokumigan （Liu-Wei-Wan）, Hachimijiogan （Ba-Wei-Di-Huang-Wan） and Goshajinkigan （Niu- Che-Shen-Qi-Wan） increase in order the number of contained ingredients. The formulations with more herbs （ingredients） produced much more effective actions on rat aorta, presumably due to compensation of the decline of pharmacological sensitivity with ageing. Thus, there are some important differences between single chemical drugs and mixture drugs with many ingredients. The effects of Kampo medicine （mixture） are never just a sum of each effect induced by a lot of in qredients. For elder persons, furthermore, Kampo medicine exerts more effective actions.

Synthesis of Mesoporous, Nanocrystalline Lanthanum Phosphate in the Presence of Citric Acid and Stearic Acid

Lanthanum phosphate was prepared in the presence of citric acid and stearic acid under methanolic conditions at pH 4.5 and pH 7, respectively. The samples obtained were intensively characterized using X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm study, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis, and Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） analysis . The as-synthesized samples prepared at pH 4.5 showed lamellar mesostruroned form with high crystallinity. Results showed that the pore size and pore volume changed when the materials were prepared under different pH conditions. Morphology of the samples was observed by using TEM, which showed that the samples possessed relatively small particles closely packed together. The as-synthesized samples were investigated using FTIR, and the mesopore formation mechanism was discussed.

Abemaciclib-induced lung damage leading to discontinuation in brain metastases from breast cancer: A case report

BACKGROUND This case report addresses the dearth of effective therapeutic interventions for central nervous system metastases in patients with HER2-negative breast *** presents a unique case of a woman with estrogen receptor-positive,HER2-negative breast cancer who developed brain *** report highlights her initial favorable response to abemaciclib and letrozole therapy prior to the discon-tinuation due to drug-induced lung damage(DILD).CASE SUMMARY In this comprehensive case summary,we present the clinical course of a woman in her 60s,who 11 years following primary breast cancer surgery,was diagnosed with multiple brain *** a third-line systemic therapy,she underwent treatment with abemaciclib and *** treatment approach yielded a near-partial response in her metastatic brain ***,abemaciclib adminis-tration ceased due to the emergence of DILD,as confirmed by a computed tomography *** DILD improved after 1 mo of *** ongoing therapeutic efforts,the patient’s condition progressively deteriorated,ultimately resulting in death due to progression of the brain *** This case underscores the challenge of managing adverse events in responsive brain metastasis patients,given the scarcity of therapeutic options.

Chemoprevention of obesity-related liver carcinogenesis by using pharmaceutical and nutraceutical agents

Obesity and its related metabolic disorders are serious health problems worldwide,and lead to various healthrelated complications,including *** human cancers,hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is one of the most common malignancies affected by ***,obesity and its related disorders might be a key target for the prevention of ***,new research indicates that the molecular abnormalities associated with obesity,including insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia,chronic inflammation,adipokine imbalance,and oxidative stress,are possible molecular mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of obesityrelated *** tea catechins and branched-chain amino acids,both of which are classified as nutraceutical agents,have been reported to prevent obesity-related HCC development by improving metabolic *** administration of acyclic retinoid,a pharmaceutical agent,reduced the incidence of HCC in obese and diabetic mice,and was also associated with improvements in insulin resistance and chronic *** this article,we review the detailed molecular mechanisms that link obesity to the development of HCC in obese *** also summarize recent evidence from experimental and clinical studies using either nutraceutical or pharmaceutical agents,and suggest that nutraceutical and pharmaceutical approaches targeting metabolic abnormalities might be a promising strategy to prevent the development of obesity-related HCC.

The nucleation and precipitation of Mn-containing dispersoids in an Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloy （6082） have been studied by optical microscopy,EPMA （electron probe microanalysis） and TEM （transmission electron microscopy）.The influence of Mn-containing dispersoids on the recrystallization behavior was also *** size and distribution of dispersoids were strongly affected by both the homogenization process and the alloying element distribution formed in the direct chill cast *** Mn-containing dispersoids were observed to nucleate preferentially on the β-Mg 2 Si phase and to be aligned along the 〈100〉 direction of the *** cold deformation,the morphology of dispersoids greatly influences the recrystallization and grain growth behavior in the annealing process.

Noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B

Infection with hepatitis B virus is an important healthproblem worldwide:it affects more than 350 millionpeople and is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity,accounting for 1 million deaths *** fibrosis is a consequence of the accumulation of extracellular matrix components in the *** accurate diagnosis of liver fibrosis is essential for the management of chronic liver *** biopsy has been considered the gold standard for diagnosing disease,grading necroinflammatory activity,and staging ***,liver biopsy is unsuitable for repeated evaluations because it is invasive and can cause major complications,including *** noninvasive evaluations have been introduced for the assessment of liver fibrosis:serum biomarkers,combined indices or scores,and imaging techniques including transient elastography,acoustic radiation force impulse,real-time tissue elastography,and magnetic resonance ***,we review the recent progress of noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis *** noninvasive evaluations for liver fibrosis have been validated first in patients with chronic hepatitis C,and later in those with chronic hepatitis *** establishment of a noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis is urgently needed to aid in the management of this leading cause of chronic liver disease.

Water Resource Development in the Quaternary Ryukyu Limestone Regions of Japan:Application of the GIS to the Site Selection of Underground Dams

Based on the natural and social conditions as well as hydrogeological characteristics of the Ryukyu limestone, a major aquifer in the Ryukyu Islands, a conception of underground dam, was proposed in the early 1970s in order to develop ground water resources in the Quaternary Ryukyu limestone regions of Japan. The practice of nearly thirty years has shown that the underground dam is an environment-friendly and effective way for developing ground water in these regions.
