Hand Cooling Enhances the Proprioceptive Drift during Rubber Hand Illusion

Background: The neural representation of the body is easily altered by integrating multiple sensory signals in the brain. The “Rubber Hand Illusion” (RHI) is one of the most popular experimental paradigms to investigate this phenomenon. During this illusion, ownership of a rubber hand is temporarily induced. It was shown that external and continuous cooling of the palm enhanced the RHI, suggesting an association between altered the autonomic nervous system regulation and altered the sense of ownership of a specific limb. Purpose: To investigate whether artificially cooling the entire hand for a short period affects the magnitude of the illusion. Methods: Participants immersed their entire hand in cool, cold, or warm water for 1 min before the RHI procedure. Results: We found that cooling the entire hand enhanced the proprioceptive drift during the RHI but not the subjective feeling of ownership. In contrast, warming and intense cooling of the entire hand did not affect the RHI strength. Conclusion: Our results suggest that transient and moderate cooling of the entire hand was sufficient in enhancing the illusory disembodiment of one’s own hand.

Molecular Functions of Oxygen-Evolving Complex Family Proteins in Photosynthetic Electron Flow

Oxygen-evolving complex （OEC） protein is the original name for membrane-peripheral subunits of photosystem （PS） II. Recently, multiple isoforms and homologs for OEC proteins have been iden- tified in the chloroplast thylakoid lumen, indicating that functional diversification has occurred in the OEC family. Gene expression profiles suggest that the Arabidopsis OEC proteins are roughly categorized into three groups： the authentic OEC group, the stressresponsive group, and the group including proteins related to the chloroplast NAD（P）H dehydrogenase （NDH） complex involved in cyclic electron transport around PSI. Based on the above gene expression profiles, molecular functions of the OEC family proteins are discussed together with our current knowledge about their functions.

Preparation of Gold Nanoparticles Loaded Chitin Nanofiber Composite

Chitin nanofibers (CNFs) processed from second most abundant biomolecule chitin were loaded with gold metallic nanoparticles (Au NPs) to obtained hybrid organic-inorganic composite which was molded in different forms dispersion, flakes, powder, and transparent thin film. First pre-organized Au NPs were prepared in soluble triblock copolymer poly (methyl vinyl ether) (PMVE) by reduction of gold precursor salt (HAuCl43H2O) by NaBH4 then NPs were mixed with diluted CNFs suspension to obtain CNFs-Au NPs composite. CNFs of width 25 - 40 nm were prepared by combination of chemical and mechanical processing in wet acidic condition from 1 wt% crab shell chitin slurry. When polymer stabilized Au NPs blended with CNF suspension, all Au NPs and 56% polymer were found mass transferred from water phase to entangle with more polar moieties of chitin. Composite’s suspension and compressed dried film were characterized by recording digital images, UV-vis, TEM, SEM, and XRD spectroscopies. When 70 m thin non transparent composite film was impregnated with tricyclodecane dimethanol dimethacrylate (TCDDMA) resin and subsequent polymerized with photoinitiator 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone, the film became transparent due to filling of nanosized CNFs in the cages of the resin.

Introduction of Education Systems for Clinical Engineers in Japan

Japanese clinical engineer(CE) is a significant and unique profession compared with other nations with its dual clinical and technology focus and national licensing. The CE system of licensing was established in May 1987 under the Clinical Engineers Act. CEs are required to complete 3 to 4 years in designated schools and pass a national examination. It is a professional medical position responsible for the operation and maintenance of life-support and non-life-support medical device systems under the direction of physicians. Currently approximately 70 educational institutes- including technical colleges and universities- provide diverse and wide-ranging curricula from engineering to various clinical disciplines to produce CEs. Since clinical practice training is mandatory as a part of institute work, an important approach for CEs is gained by working in hospitals. The comprehensive curricula and the licensing system in Japan together serve to keep the appropriate quantity and quality of CEs. The Japan Association for Clinical Engineers(JACE) was established in February 1990; one of its aims is to support improvement of CEs throughout their careers through various lectures, seminars, on-the-job trainings, workshops, and an annual member meeting. New CEs can now take advantage of video e-learning. For junior CEs, there are seminars for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, blood purification, heart-lung bypass, respiratory therapy, operating room, intensive care unit, arrhythmia and aphaeresis related devices, as well as healthcare technology management(HTM). Also, the institutes provide a leadership seminar alongside this clinical practice training. Besides the licensing process, a proper certification system for CEs is a critical element in the clinical field. This enhances the ability of CEs to engage in more extensive duties and develop specialties, as well as to provide better healthcare.
