Covalent organic frameworks(COFs), as an emerging class of porous crystalline materials constructed by covalent links between the building monomers, have gained tremendous attention. Over the past 15 years, COFs have made rapid progress and substantial development in the chemistry and materials fields. However, the synthesis of COFs has been dominated by solvothermal methods for a long time and it usually involves high temperature, high pressure and toxic organic solvents, which created many challenges for environmental considerations. Recently,the exploration of new approaches for facile fabrication of COFs has aroused extensive interest. Hence, in this review, we comprehensively describe the synthetic strategies of COFs from the aspects of nonconventional heating methods and reaction media. In addition, the advantages,limitations and properties of the preparation methods are compared. Finally, we outline the main challenges and development prospects of the synthesis of COFs in the future and propose some possible solutions.

L-phenylalanine-derived polymerizable organogel, N’-octadecyl-Nα-(4-vinyl)-benzoyl-L-phenylalanineami- de (4) has been prepared according to the procedure described elsewhere. Compound 4 was successfully polymerized by surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from the initiator grafted silica particles (sil-poly4). It was also telomerized with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) and the telomer (T4) was grafted on to silica (sil-T4). TGA and elemental analysis measurement revealed that higher amount of polymer can graft by ATRP process than that of “grafting to” strategy. The results of 13C CP/MAS NMR measurement showed that the N-alkyl chain of the grafted polymers for both sil-poly4 and sil-T4 remained as less ordered gauche conformational form on silica surface and no inversion to trans form was occurred until temperature is increased up to 50?C. The retention of alkylbenzene samples showed that sil-poly4 prepared by “grafting from” method yielded extremely higher retention than conventional C18 phase however, sil-T4 prepared by conventional “grafting to” method showed lower retention than C18 phase. Aspects of molecular recognition were evaluated by the retention studies of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aromatic positional isomers. We have observed sil-T4 yielded slightly higher selectivity for PAHs than sil-poly4 regardless the fact that it has low surface coverage and lower hydrophobic interactions. The enhanced selectivity observed for sil-T4 than C18 phases and sil-poly4 can be explained by the π - π interactions between the guest PAHs and carbonyl groups present in the polymer chain. In addition the aromatic moieties of compound 4 that aggregates through π - π interactions also contribute to the separation of PAHs for both sil-poly4 and sil-T4. Chitosan Sub-micron Particles Prepared Using Sulfate Ion Salt as Bacteriostatic Materials in Neutral pH Condition

In this paper, the newly developed ion exchange phase separation method to create chitosan sub-micron particles is introduced: 1) chitosan was dissolved in a lactic acid aqueous solution. 2) the obtained chitosan solution was added stepwise in a sodium sulfate aqueous solution and cooled down to 5℃ to become slightly turbid through agglutination. 3) desalinating and deacidifying of the mixture was carried out by a dialyzing tube method. IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis indicated that the agglutination of chitosan was induced by crosslinking effect with an electrostatic interaction between sulfate anions and amino groups in the glucosamine unit although large excess of Na2SO4 caused undesirable further agglutination of the resultant chitosan particles. As a result, the proper amount of Na2SO4 was approximately 1.0 - 10.0 equivalent for the amino group to create the chitosan particles with a sub-micron size. In addition, we investigated an antibacterial activity test for Escherichia coli of the obtained chitosan particles. The significant antibacterial activity was observed in incubation even at neutral pH condition while the chitosan microbeads (size: ca 200 ∫m) prepared by the conventional method and chitosan granules (size: ca 600 ∫m) as starting materials showed almost no antibacterial activity in the same condition.

Preparation and Characterization of Maltose-Pendant Polymer/Mica Nanocomposites and Their Application to Oxygen Gas Barrier Films

Maltose-pendant polymer/mica nanocomposites were prepared by a solution intercalation method. For organic composite part, 1) maltose-pendant polymer (homopolymer) and 2) the copolymer of maltose-pendant monomer and a small amount of N,N-Dimethylamino propylacrylamide, methyl chloride quartenary were used. The morphological studies (XRD and FE-SEM) revealed that the hybrid of maltose-pendant polymer was a conventional phase separated composite. On the other hand, the hybrid using the copolymer exhibited exfoliated structure. Both the conventional composite of maltose-pendant polymer and the nanocomposite of copolymer were applied to a coating material for oxygen gas barrier layer on a nylon-6 film, and oxygen transmission rates of the films were evaluated. Maltose-pendant polymer had a good oxygen barrier property under dry condition, and the barrier property under wet condition was improved by the hybridization with mica. In contrast, the barrier property of copolymer was slightly inferior to that of maltosependant polymer. However, under dry condition, it can be seen that the nanocomposite of copolymer improves the barrier property more effectively than the case of conventional composite of maltose-pendant polymer.

Machine learning is an emerging tool in the field of materials chemistry for uncovering a principle from large ***,we focus on the spherical precipitation behavior of polymers and computationally extract a hidden trend that is orthogonal to the availability bias in the chemical *** constructing a dataset,four polymers were precipitated from 416 solvent/nonsolvent combinations,and the morphology of the resulting precipitates were *** dataset was subjected to computational investigations consisting of principal component analysis and machine learning based on random forest model and support vector ***,we eliminated the effect of the availability bias and found a linear combination of Hansen parameters to be the most suitable variable for predicting precipitation *** predicted appropriate solvents are those with low hydrogen bonding capability,low polarity,and small molecular ***,we found that the capability for spherical precipitation is orthogonal to the availability bias and forms an extraordinary axis in Hansen space,which is the origin of the conventional difficulty in identifying the *** extraordinary axis points toward a void region,indicating the potential value of synthesizing novel solvents located therein.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of high-solids anaerobic mono-digestion of riverbank grass under thermophilic conditions, focusing on the effects of the strength and the amount of inoculum. Ensiled grass was inoculated with three different inocula; inoculum from liquid anaerobic digester（LI）, inoculum from dry anaerobic digester（DI）, and mixture of LI and DI（MI）, at feedstock-to-inoculum ratio（FIR） of 1, 2 and 4. The ensiling process of riverbank grass reduced moisture content（p 〉 0.05）, while the hemicellulose content was significantly increased from 30.88% to 35.15%（p 〈 0.05）, on dry matter basis. The highest methane production was at an FIR of 2 with MI（167 L/kg VSadded）,which was significantly higher（p 〈 0.05） than with DI, but not significant compared to LI（p 〉 0.05）. At an FIR of 4, digesters inoculated with LI and DI failed to produce methane,whereas 135 LCH4/kg VSaddedwas obtained with MI. The kinetic studies showed that at an FIR of 1 with LI and MI, the inoculum had less of effects on the hydrolysis rate constant（0.269 day-1and 0.245 day-1） and methane production（135 versus 149 L/kg VSadded）; rather,it affected the lag phase. In a thermophilic HS-AD of riverbank grass, the mixture of inoculum with low and high total solids content（TS） helps increase the TS of inoculum and digestion process. An FIR of 2 was deducted to be the limit for a better startup time and higher volumetric productivity of methane.

The occurre nce of biologically active pharmaceuticals in aquatic enviro nments raised the potential risks to aquatic *** these marketed biological active pharmaceuticals,it has been estimated that40%of them target G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs).We have illustrated pharmaceutical activities of GPCR targeted pharmaceuticals in English and Japanese wastewater by the in vitro transforming growth factor-α(TGFα)shedding ***,as the most important producer and consumer of pharmaceuticals,the occurrence of GPCR targeted pharmaceuticals in China had remained *** this study,we investigated the pharmaceutical activities of GPCR targeted pharmaceuticals in secondary effluents of Chinese wastewater treatment *** discovered antagonistic activities against angiotensin(AT1)receptor at up to 7.2×102 ng-valsartan-equivalent quantity/L in Chinese wastewater for the first time as well as agonistic activities against dopamine(D2)***,in parallel with the assay,we determined concentrations of GPCR targeted pharmaceuticals in target wastewater by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS/MS).Through the comparison of predicted antagonistic activities calculated by concentrations and potency values from the assay,we found that the measured antagonistic activities against AT1 receptor from the assay were higher than the predicted AT1 activities from valsartan,irbesartan,and losartan,indicating the potential existence of other unknown AT1 antagonists in wastewater.

Prognostic factors associated with mortality in patients with gastric fundal variceal bleeding

AIM To determine the prognostic factors associated with mortality in patients with gastric fundal variceal (GFV) *** In total, 42 patients were endoscopically diagnosed with GFV bleeding from January 2000 to March 2014. We retrospectively reviewed the patients' medical records and assessed their history, etiology of liver cirrhosis, disease conditions, treatment options for GFV bleeding, medications administered before and after onset of GFV bleeding, blood test results(hemoglobin, albumin, and bilirubin concentrations), and imaging results(including computed tomography and abdominal ultrasonography). We also assessed the prognostic factors associated with short-term mortality(up to 90 d) and long-term mortality in all *** Multivariate analysis showed that prophylactic administration of antibiotics was an independent prognostic factor associated with decreases in short-term mortality (OR = 0.08, 95%CI: 0.01-0.52) and longterm mortality (OR = 0.27, 95%CI: 0.08-0.91) in patients with GFV bleeding. In contrast, concurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and regular use of proton pump inhibitors (PPI) were independent prognostic factors associated with increases in shortterm mortality(HCC: OR = 15.4, 95%CI: 2.08-114.75; PPI: OR = 12.76, 95%CI: 2.13-76.52) and long-term mortality (HCC: OR = 7.89, 95%CI: 1.98-31.58; PPI: OR = 10.91, 95%CI: 2.86-41.65) in patients with GFV bleeding. The long-term overall survival rate was significantly lower in patients who regularly used PPI than in those who did not use PPI(P = 0.0074).CONCLUSION Administration of antibiotics is associated with decreased short- and long-term mortality, while concurrent HCC and regular PPI administration are associated with increased short- and long-term mortality.

AIM： To produce an antibody against rat eosinophil cationic protein （ECP） and to examine the effects of the antibody in rats with dextran sulfate sodium （DSS）-induced colitis. METHODS： An antibody was raised against rat ECP. Rats were treated with 3% DSS in drinking water for 7 d and received the antibody or normal serum. The colons were examined histologically and correlated with clinical symptoms. Immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis were estimated as a grade of inflammation. RESULTS： The ECP antibody stained the activated eosinophils around the injured crypts in the colonic mucosa. Antibody treatment reduced the severity of colonic ulceration and acute clinical symptoms （diarrhea and/or bloodstained stool）. Body weight gain was significantly greater and the colon length was significantly longer in anti-ECPtreated rats than in normal serum-treated rats. Expression of ECP in activated eosinophils was associated with the presence of erosions and inflammation. The number of Ki-67-positive cells in the regenerated surface epithelium increased in anti-ECP-treated rats compared with normal serum-treated rats. Western blot analysis revealed reduced expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor （MIF） in anti-ECP-treated rats. CONCLUSION： Our results indicate that treatment with ECP antibody, improved DSS-induced colitis in rats, possibly by increasing the regenerative activity of the colonic epithelium and downregulation of the immune response, and suggest that anti-ECP may promote intestinal wound healing in patients with ulcerative colitis （UC）.
