Combustion synthesis of YAG:Ce phosphors via the thermite reaction of aluminum

Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet（YAG：Ce） as a yellow phosphor for white light-emitting diodes（LEDs） was synthesized via a facile combustion method using Y2 O3, CeO2, Al2 O3, Al,and NaClO4 as raw materials. The combustion synthesis approach utilizes the strong exothermic oxidation of aluminum to realize a self-sustaining reaction. In this study, we investigated the effects of the ratios of Al2 O3 to AI,fluxes, and coprecipitated materials as raw materials on the luminescence properties of the synthesized YAG：Ce phosphors. When the amount of Al2 O3 x is varied, the combustion reaction proceeds at x ≤ 1.8,with x = 1.725 being the optimum condition for producing a high-performance product. When 5 wt%BaF2 is added, the luminescence intensity is significantly improved owing to a decrease of YAP（YAlO3）formation with improved uniformity. However, the addition of CaF2 and NaF does not improve the luminescence properties. To suppress the segregation of CeO2, we used the coprecipitated material Y2 O3-CeO2 as a raw material. Unlike with separate addition of Y2 O3 and CeO2, Ce ions are uniformly distributed in the coprecipitated material, resulting in improved luminescence properties. The combination of BaF2 and coprecipitated material significantly improves the internal quantum efficiency to83.0%, which is close to that of commercial phosphors.

AIM： To compare efficacy of proton pump inhibitors （PPIs） with H2-receptor antagonists （H2RA$） plus pro- kinetics （Proks） for dysmotility-like symptoms in func- tional dyspepsia （FD）. METHODS： Subjects were randomized to receive openlabel treatment with either rabeprazole 10 mg od （n = 57） or famotidine 10 mg bid plus mosapride 5 mg tid （n = 57） for 4 wk. The primary efficacy endpoint was change （%） from baseline in total dysmotility-like dyspepsia symptom score. The secondary efficacy endpoint was patient satisfaction with treatment. RESULTS： The improvement in dysmotility-like dyspep- sia symptom score on day 28 was significantly greater in the rabeprazole group （22.5% ± 29.2% of baseline） than the famotidine ＋ mosapride group （53.2%±58.6% of baseline, P 〈 0.0001）. The superior benefit of rabeprazole treatment after 28 d was consistent regardless of Helicobacter pylori status. Significantly more subjects in the rabeprazole group were satisfied or very satisfied with treatment on day 28 than in the famotidine ＋ mosapride group （87.7% vs 59.6%, P = 0.0012）. Rabeprazole therapy was the only significant predictor of treatment response （P 〈 0.0001）, defined as a total symptom score improvement ≥ 50%. CONCLUSION： PPI monotherapy improves dysmotil- ity-like symptoms significantly better than H2RAs plus Proks, and should be the treatment of first choice for Japanese FD.

Combination therapy with daclatasvir and asunaprevir for dialysis patients infected with hepatitis C virus

The standard antiviral therapy for dialysis patients infected with hepatitis C virus(HCV) is(pegylated) interferon monotherapy, but its efficacy is insufficient. Oral direct-acting antiviral agents(DAAs) have recently been developed for chronic hepatitis C patients. However, some DAAs have contraindications for chronic renal failure(CRF). Daclatasvir and asunaprevir are metabolized largely in the liver and are not contraindicated in CRF. Combination therapy with daclatasvir and asunaprevir was used for 4 dialysis patients infected with genotype 1b HCV. One patient had viral breakthrough, and the 3 others had sustained virological response 12. One patient was admitted for heart failure and percutaneous coronary intervention due to concomitant ischemic disease. Heart failure was unlikely to be caused by the combination therapy, as it was probably due to water overload. The patient continued to receive the combination therapy after the remission of the heart failure. The combination therapy was well tolerated in the other patients.

Probable case of drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptom syndrome due to combination therapy with daclatasvir and asunaprevir

A 66-year-old, interferon-ineligible, treatment-naive man who was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C due to hepatitis C virus genotype 1b began combination therapy with daclatasvir and asunaprevir. On day 14 of treatment, hepatic reserve and renal function deterioration was observed, while his transaminase levels were normal. Both daclatasvir and asunaprevir were discontinued on day 18 of treatment, because the patient complained of dark urine and a rash on his trunk and four limbs. After discontinuing antiviral therapy, the abnormal laboratory finding and clinical manifestations gradually improved, without recurrence. Our case fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of probable drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptom(DRESS) syndrome. Despite the 18-d treatment, sustained virological response 12 was achieved. Based on the clinical course, we concluded that there was a clear cause-and-effect relationship between the treatment and adverse events. To our knowledge, this patient represents the first case of probable DRESS syndrome that includes concomitant deterioration of hepatic reserve and renal function due to combination therapy with daclatasvir and asunaprevir, regardless of normalization of transaminase levels. Our case suggests that we should pay attention not only to the transaminase levels but also to allergic symptoms associated with organ involvement during combination therapy with daclatasvir and asunaprevir.

Growth inhibition of a human colon carcinoma cell, COLO 201, by a natural product, Vitex agnus-castusfruits extract, in vivoand in vivo

An extract from ripe fruit of Vitex agnus-castus (Vitex) has been used to treat patients with various obstetric and gynecological disorders in Europe. We have demonstrated that Vitex showed cytocidal effects on various types of cancer cell lines including a human colon carcinoma cell line, COLO 201. In this study, we extended our previous study to investigate the detailed mechanisms underlying cytocidal effects of Vi- tex on COLO 201. Furthermore, a possible clinical application of Vitex was also explored in vivo using nude mice xenografted with the cells. Treatment with Vitex induced apoptosis in COLO 201 in a time-dependent manner, accompanying with activa-tion of caspase-9 and -3, but not caspase-8. An inhibitor for c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK), but not p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), significantly suppressed the apoptosis induction along with caspase-3 activation. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related genes were also upregulated by Vitex treatment. Most importantly, the in vivo efficacy of Vitex evaluated by assessing the tumor growth revealed that the administration of Vitex significantly suppressed tumor growth in COLO 201 xenografted mice. Collectively, current results suggest that apoptosis induction by Vitex in COLO 201 is mediated through the activation of JNK and caspase-9, -3 resulted from ER stress. Based on the current clinical application of Vitex, these results thus provide a new insight into the clinical use of Vitex and leave open a possibility of a new regimen as an alternative medicine approach for such devastating colon cancer treatment.

Onset Time Profiles for Syncope Associated with α1-Adrenoceptor Blockers in Males: Analysis of a Spontaneous Adverse Drug Event Database

Background: α1-Adrenoceptor blockers (α1Bs) are used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and hypertension, but they are known to cause hypotension-related adverse events. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the onset time profiles for syncope associated with the use of α1Bs. Methods: We analyzed the data obtained from?the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database for a period from April 2004 until November 2016 and calculated reporting odds ratios (RORs) for eight α1Bs available on the Japanese market, using disproportionality analysis. Moreover, time information recorded in the JADER database was analyzed to evaluate the onset times of adverse events. Results: In total, 186,724 reports for males older than 20 years were analyzed. Significant RORs for syncope, with 95% confidence intervals, were obtained for naftopidil (2.53, 1.81 - 3.53), silodosin (4.24, 2.37 - 5.20), and tamsulosin (2.22, 1.75 - 2.81). The median onset times of syncope for naftopidil, silodosin, and tamsulosin were 37, 26, and 108 days, respectively. The shape parameters obtained by fitting the data for the three α1Bs to the Weibull distribution were all less than 1.0, indicating that all these drugs could be classified as the early failure type. The cumulative incidence rates showed that the onset times of syncope tended to be similar among the three α1Bs. Conclusions: Patients treated with selective α1Bs should be closely monitored for 100 days, especially in the first 20 to 40 days after initiation of silodosin or naftopidil. This information may be useful for patients and healthcare professionals in preventing syncope due to the use of selective α1Bs.

A discussion on vertical profiles of dissolved Cu, Cd and Ni in the northwestern Pacific, south of Japan

Some of the results about vertical profile of heavy metals of seawater to the south of Japan in Oct. 1990 are presented and discussed in relation to the concentration of dissolved Cu, Cd and Ni to biogeochemical environments. It points out that the distribution of dissolved Cu is higher in surface water than that in/upper 500 m layer, and maxima value attains the 8. 2 n mol/dm3 in depth of 4 000 m. The concentrations of dissolved Ni ranges from 3. 4 n mol/dm3 in surface seawater to 8. 5 n mol/dm3 in the deep to the south of Japan. The highest values are observed in the colder waters. This paper shows also that the vertical profile of dissolved Cd is perfect nutrient-type distribution. And dissolved Cd and Phosphate are linearly correlated by the regression equation. The ·Cd : ·N : ·P atomic ratio is 3. 5 × 10-4 : 14 : 1.

Effects of Soil Management on Changes of Soil Carbon Content in Alluvial Paddy Soil

Effects of soil management on carbon content in alluvial paddy were investigated using past soil survey data of Niigata prefecture, Japan. The changes of soil management were as follows：（1） slight decrease in nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer application rates; （2） decrease to half in the application of soil amendments, like calcium silicate; （3） decrease in compost application and increase in rice straw application; （4） increase in pipe drainage. In spite of these changes, negligible change of carbon content in the plow-layer of alluvial paddy soils had been observed for past 25 years. However, without rice straw application and paddy-upland rotations, the soil carbon content had been decreased. Carbon content of alluvial paddy soils classified into Gley Lowland soil （Fluvisol or Gleysol） at the depth of 0-30 cm was calculated about 49-103 g-kg＂1 and gross carbon sequestration was calculated 7.68 Mt in the paddy field soils in Niigata prefecture.
