A case study on the cyclonic eddy generated by the tropical cyclone looping over the northern South China Sea (NSCS) is presented, using TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data and AVHRR sea surface temperature (SST) data. Three cases relating to the tropical cyclone events (Typhoon Kai-Tak in July 2000, Tropical Storm Russ in June 1994 and Tropical Storm Maria in August-September 2000) over the NSCS have been analyzed. For each looping tropical cyclone case, the cyclonic eddy with an obvious sea level depression appears in the sea area where the tropical cyclone takes a loop form, and lasts for about 2 weeks with a slight variation in location. The cold core with the SST difference greater than 2℃against its surrounding areas is also observed by the satellite-derived SST data.

Previous Background: Hemodynamic factors, like blood pressure, have been established to be major determinants of cardiac left ventricular structure. However, several factors other than blood pressure to influence cardiac mass have been implicated. When we did medical survey, cardiac left ventricular mass index (LVMI) of one ethnic group that had higher blood pressure was found to be smaller than that of the other ethnic groups with a lower blood pressure. Such contradicted data from the present study were analyzed combining blood pressure, LVMI and chemical parameters obtained from blood and urine. Methods: In a medical survey conducted in Xinjiang, China, 279 people (65 - 70 years old) from three ethnic groups (Kazakh, Uygur and Han) from two separated regions provided blood and urine samples and underwent echocardiography and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). Results: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure obtained from ABPM and urinary sodium excretion values were significantly higher in Kazakh than that in Uygur and Han. However, LVMI in Kazakh was lower than that in other 2 groups. Plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) and plasma renin activity (PRA) were significantly lowest in Kazakh. The values of LVMI in all ethnic groups were positively related to both blood pressure and PAC. An inverse correlation was identified between PAC and urinary sodium excretion value. Conclusion: Although higher blood pressure in Kazakh subjects, their LVMI was lower than those of Uygur and Han, whose blood pressure was lower than that in Kazakh. These results suggest that blood pressure is not always a determinant for LVMI value. There is a possibility that relatively lower PAC resulted from higher sodium intake suppressed the rise in LVMI caused by higher blood pressure in Kazakh.

TIDAL FEATURES IN THE CHINA SEAS AND THEIR ADJACENT SEA AREAS AS DERIVED FROM TOPEX/POSEIDON ALTIMETER DATA

Some important tidal features of 8 major tidal constituents ( M 2, S 2, K 1, O 1, P 1, Sa, N 2 and K 2 ) in the China Seas and their adjacent sea areas were obtained using six years’ TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter data. The results showed that the obtained co tidal and co range charts for these major tidal constituents agreed well with those of previous researches using observational data from coastal tidal gauge stations and numerical models.

针对L波段合成孔径雷达图像尚无波浪反演算法的问题,提出了利用高级陆地观测卫星(ALOS)搭载的相控阵列L波段合成孔径雷达(PALSAR)在日本近海的图像发展的算法,反演得到了涌浪参数(包括波长和波向)。研究假设L波段SAR对涌浪的成像机制为线性的,通过图像处理得到了高质量的PALSAR图像谱,从此谱可计算得到谱峰值波长和波传播方向。此图像谱所固有的180°方向模糊,可利用涌浪只向近岸传播的特点解决。通过对反演和日本"全国港湾海洋波浪情报网"(NOWPHAS)现场观测的波参数的比较,波长的偏差是-10.5m,均方差是18.3m,相关系数是0.94;波向的偏差是-1.3°,均方差是15.5°,相关系数是0.94。上述数据表明,反演方法中将L波段PALSAR对涌浪的成像机制假设为线性是可行的。

Volatile Substances in Polymer Toys Made from Butadiene and Styrene

The residual levels and migration behavior of volatile substances were detected using HS-GC/MS for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) toys, thermoplastic elastomer toys, and rubber toys made from 1,3-butadiene and styrene found on the Japanese market. The maximum residual level of these volatile substances was 2600 μg/g of styrene in ABS toys. In particular, the levels of known carcinogens 1,3-butadiene, benzene, and acrylonitrile are 5.3, 2.5 and 55 μg/g, which are much lower than the EU limit of 0.1%. Furthermore, some volatile substances migrated from ABS toys into water in amounts of 3 -40 ng/mL. Thermoplastic elastomer toys and rubber toys contained these volatile substances at significantly lower levels than ABS toys.

Impact of laparoscopic liver resection on bleeding complications in patients receiving antithrombotics

AIM To assess the impact of laparoscopic liver resection(LLR) on surgical blood loss(SBL),especially in patients with antithrombotics for thromboembolic *** Consecutive 258 patients receiving liver resection at our institution between 2010 and 2016 were retrospectively *** antithrombotic therapy(ATT;antiplatelets and/or anticoagulation) was regularly used in 100 patients(ATT group,38.8%) whereas not used in 158(non-ATT group,61.2%).Our perioperative management of high thromboembolic risk patients included maintenance of preoperative aspirin monotherapy for patients with antiplatelet therapy and bridging heparin for patients with *** both ATT and non-ATT groups,outcome variables of patients undergoing LLR were compared with those of patients receiving open liver resection(OLR),and the independent risk factors for increased SBL were determined by multivariate *** This series included 77 LLR and 181 *** were 3 thromboembolic events(1.2%) in a whole cohort,whereas increased SBL(≥500 mL) and postoperative bleeding complications(BCs) occurred in 66 patients(25.6%) and 8(3.1%),*** in the ATT and non-ATT groups,LLR was significantly related to reduced SBL and low incidence of BCs,although LLR was less performed as anatomical *** analysis showed that anatomical liver resection was the most significant risk factor for increased SBL [risk ratio(RR)=6.54,P<0.001] in the whole cohort,and LLR also had the significant negative impact(RR = 1/10.0,P<0.001).The same effects of anatomical resection(RR=15.77,P<0.001) and LLR(RR=1/5.88,P=0.019) were observed when analyzing the patients in the ATT *** LLR using the two-surgeon technique is feasible and safely performed even in the ATT-burdened patients with thromboembolic *** from the extent of liver resection,LLR is significantly associated with reduced SBL,both in the ATT and non-ATT groups.

Extraction Method and Determination of Sudan I Present in Sunset Yellow FCF by Isocratic High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

A method to extract and analyze Sudan I present in Sunset Yellow FCF (SYF) products was developed and validated. The method included the simple extraction of Sudan I from the SYF product using water, acetonitrile, and ethyl acetate and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis with isocratic elution using acetonitrile:water (7:3) with a photodiode array detector at 485 nm. This method was found to remove most of the excess SYF colorant and other impurities before injection to the HPLC instrument, making it easy to maintain precision control in routine laboratory tests for Sudan I in the SYF colorant. The detection limit of Sudan I in SYF products was 0.2 μg/g. A survey conducted to determine Sudan I in 13 commercial SYF samples from Japanese manufacturers from 1970 to 2010 showed that the levels of Sudan I ranged from 0.3 to 1.9 μg/g in products manufactured from 1970 to 1996 and were below the limit of detection in products manufactured after 2005.

Improvement of the Assay Method for Steviol Glycosides in the JECFA Specifications

Steviol glycosides are natural sweetener constituents found in the leaves of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni (Asteraceae). The specifications for steviol glycosides were established by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) in 2008, although there was a call in the following year for the modification of this assay method to enable the determination of nine steviol glycosides rather than just seven. In response, based on a proposed method by the Japan Stevia Association, we developed an improved method by changing the HPLC conditions and including the use of an octadecylsilyl column instead of an amino-bonded column to enable the rapid and reliable determination of the nine steviol glycosides by an isocratic HPLC-UV method. With the developed method, the nine steviol glycosides can be separately determined, and identified using individual reference chemicals as standards, unlike the previous identification method, which was based on the relative retention times. In addition, the single stevioside quantification standard was replaced with both stevioside and rebaudioside A quantification standards. Importantly, the validation of the developed method was successful. The limits of quantification for the nine steviol glycosides were between 0.2% and 0.6%. The developed assay method for the nine steviol glycosides was proposed to JECFA and adopted as the revised assay method for the steviol glycosides specifications at its 73rd meeting in 2010.
