The bending strength of carbon?fiber/thermoplastic epoxy composites?(CF/TP-EP Compo.)?had?bi-linear increasewith increase of weight-average molecular weight (Mw) of matrix. The transition in the bending strength appeared at around 55k of Mw (“k”?means 103). SEM observation of fractured surface of CF/TP-EP Compo. showed that the fracture mode changed from interfacial failure to fiber breakage dominated failure. The smooth surface of carbon fibers appeared at lower Mw than 55k while some resin remained on the fibers indicating good adhesion between carbon fiber and matrix at higher Mw than 55k. The interfacial shear strength between carbon fiber and matrix bi-linearly increased with an increase of Mw similarly to the bending strength of the composite, measured by the micro droplet test. The dynamic loss tanδ?of the matrix measured at 2?Hz also showed a bi-linear relationship with respect to Mw having a knee point at Mw = 55k. The connection probability of two cracks introduced on?each side of specimens also confirmed that the interfacial strength between carbon fiber and matrix is the key for the mechanical performance of CF/TP-EP Compo. in bending.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) induces the hypertrophy in cultured H9c2 cardiomyocytes and cell death in glutathione (GSH)-depleted H9c2 cells. In the present study, we observed that pretreatment with a serine protease inhibitor, N-a-tosyl-L-lysine chloromethyl ketone (TLCK), significantly prevented the H2O2-induced cell damages in GSH-depleted H9c2 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. The phase contrast microscopy revealed that although the exposure of the GSH-depleted H9c2 cells to H2O2 resulted in a globular shape of the cells, TLCK prevented the occurrence of H2O2-induced morphological changes. TLCK also inhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species in the cells after addition of H2O2, suggesting that the antioxidant action of TLCK is involved in the protection against the cell damages by H2O2. Application of TLCK after ~30 min of exposure to H2O2 could significantly protect the cells from cell damages. The other serine protease inhibitors that were tested could not prevent the cell damages in GSH- depleted H9c2 cells. Pretreatment with an inhibitor of nuclear factor-kB translocation into the nucleus and a proteasome inhibitor did not prevent the cell damages in GSH-depleted H9c2 cells. An inhibitor of p53 significantly prevented the cell damages in GSH-depleted H9c2 cells. These results suggest that antioxidative action of TLCK prevents the death of GSH-depleted H9c2 cardiomyocytes induced by H2O2.

Homology modeling and structural analysis of human glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (hGCLC) were performed with a software package the Molecular Operating Environment. A yeast GCLC (yGCLC;PDB code: 3LVV) was selected as a template for the 3D structure modeling of hGCLC. The modeled hGCLC showed significant 3D similarities at the ligand biding site (LBS) to the yGCLC structure. The contact energy profiles of the hGCLC model were in good agreement with those of the yGCLC structure. Ramachandran plots revealed that only 1.4% of the amino acid residues were in the disfavored region for hGCLC. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) map of the hGCLC model exhibited that the model was slightly different from the yGCLC model electrostatically at the LBS. Further, docking simulations revealed the similarity of the ligand-receptor bound location between the hGCLC and yGCLC models. The different binding orientations between the glutathione (GSH)-hGCLC and GSH-yGCLC complexes reflected the different MEP maps at the LBSs between the hGCLC and yGCLC models. These results indicate that the hGCLC model was successfully modeled and analyzed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a hGCLC model with detailed analyses, and our data verify that the model can be utilized for application to target hGCLC for the development of anticancer drugs.

AIM To elucidate the role of STAT3 in hepatocarcinogenesis and biliary ductular proliferation following chronic liver injury. METHODS We investigated thioacetamide(TAA)-induced liver injury, compensatory hepatocyte proliferation, and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) development in hepatic STAT3-deficient mice. In addition, we evaluated TAAinduced biliary ductular proliferation and analyzed the activation of sex determining region Y-box9(SOX9) and Yes-associated protein(YAP), which regulate the transdifferentiation of hepatocytes to *** Both compensatory hepatocyte proliferation and HCC formation were significantly decreased in hepatic STAT3-deficient mice as compared with control mice. STAT3 deficiency resulted in augmentation of hepatic necrosis and fibrosis. On the other hand, biliary ductular proliferation increased in hepatic STAT3-deficient livers as compared with control livers. SOX9 and YAP were upregulated in hepatic STAT3-deficient *** STAT3 may regulate hepatocyte proliferation as well as transdifferentiation into cholangiocytes and serve as a therapeutic target for HCC inhibition and biliary regeneration.

This report presents a climatology of the landfall characteristics of tropical cyclones(TCs) by country. Landfalling TCs can produce strong winds, storm surges and severe flooding that may result in loss of life and widespread damages. Although historically many governments have estimated the frequency of TC landfall for their own country, less work has been undertaken from a global viewpoint. This report addresses that gap by presenting a comparative assessment that may assist global efforts toward disaster risk reduction through improved understanding of the relative level of exposure of countries to TCs. The various aspects of the climatology of TC landfalls for each country are provided. Using the definition of a TC landfall as the intersection of the TC track with a coastline, eleven countries were detected as having an average of at least one landfall per year. China has the highest rate of TC landfalls. The Philippines ranks second and Japan third. A lot of countries that face the North Western Pacific were included in TC-Landfall countries, which is attributed to the high rate of TC formation over the basin.

In this study, we compared the motion accuracy of six degrees of freedom (6D) couch for precision radiotherapy with or without weights attached to the couch. Two digital cameras were focused on the iso-center of a linear accelerator. Images of a needle which had been fixed to the 6D couch were obtained using the cameras when the couch moved in translation and rotation around each axis. The three-dimensional (3D) coordinates of the needle were calculated from coordinate values in the images. A coordinate error of the needle position relative to the theoretical position was calculated. The errors were obtained with or without a 60 kg weight attached to the 6D couch, and these errors were compared with each other. AIM： To clarify clinical features of the NSAID-induced sma bowel lesions using a new method of endoscopy. METHODS： This is a retrospective study and we analyzed seven patients with small bowel lesions while taking NSAIDs among 61 patients who had undergone doubleballoon endoscopy because of gastro-intestinal bleeding or anemia between September 2000 and March 2004, at .lichi Medical School Hospital in Japan. Neither conventional EGD nor colonoscopy revealed any lesions of potential bleeding sources including ulcerations. Double-balloon endoscopy was carried out from oral approach in three patients, from anal approach in three patients, and from both approaches in one patient. RESULTS： Ulcers or erosions were observed in the ileum in six patients and in the jejunum in one patient, respectively. The ulcers were multiple in all the patients with different features from tiny punched out ulcers to deep ulcerations with oozing hemorrhage or scar. All the patients recovered uneventfully and had full resolution of symptoms after suspension of the drug. CONCLUSION： NSAIDs can induce injuries in the small bowel even in patients without any lesions in both the stomach and colon.

AIM： To determine the efficacy of long-term lamivudine treatment of a large number of Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS： In this retrospective, multi-center trial, 318 Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis B received 100 mg of lamivudine daily for up to 36 （median 21） mo. Virological response was a decline to a serum HBV DNA level less than 3.7 log copies/mL. Virological breakthrough was defined as the reappearance of a serum HBV DNA level to more than 10-fold the minimum during treatment. RESULTS： Lamivudine produced virological response in 86.8% of the 318 patients at 6 mo, in 80.2% of 252 patients at 12 mo, in 69.2% of 133 patients at 24 mo, and in 53.6% of 28 patients at 36 mo. Forward stepwise logistic regression analysis showed an HBV DNA level less than 6.8 log copies/mL （P〈 0.0001）, HBeAg negativity （P〈 0.0001）, a platelet count of 100×10^9/L or more （P= 0.0162） at baseline, and a decline of the HBV DNA level of more than 3.2 log copies/mL as compared with the baseline level at 3 mo after the start of treatment （P= 0.0003） to be significantly associated with virological response. Among patients with a virological response, virological breakthrough was seen in 5.3% of 19 patients who responded virologically at 1 mo, in 20.7% of 203 patients at 3 mo, in 27.5% of 51 patients at 6 mo, in 33.3% of 12 patients at 9 mo, and in 100% of 3 patients at ≥15 mo. A virological breakthrough was found significantly more often in patients with delayed virological response. CONCLUSION： Lamivudine treatment could suppress serum HBV DNA in most of the tested Japanese patients. Long-term efficacy might be seen in patients without HBeAg at baseline, in the absence of cirrhosis, and in patients with a decline in HBV DNA level soon after the start of treatment.
