High relative fat-free mass is important for maintaining serum albumin levels in patients with compensated liver cirrhosis

AIM: In patients with liver cirrhosis, hypoalbuminemia causes edema and ascites, and a reduction in the quality of life. Since musculature is catabolized to supply amino acids for albumin synthesis in malnutritional cirrhotic patients, muscular volume is hypothesized to play an important role in albumin production. Therefore, we investigated the correlation between serum albumin levels and the fat-free mass (FFM) in cirrhotic ***: Fifty-seven patients (26 males and 31 females)with compensated liver cirrhosis were evaluated. Patients with edema or ascites were excluded from the *** volunteers (n = 104; 48 males and 56 females)were also evaluated as controls. FFM was measured using 5-500 kHz multifrequency bioelectric impedance *** minimize the difference in FFM distribution between males and females, we introduced a new marker, relative FFM (rFFM), which represents the ratio of FFM in a patient relative to that in a volunteer of the same height. Following FFM measurement, the serum albumin levels of patients were assayed ***: In patients with active cirrhosis (alanine aminotransaminase [ALT] ＞50 U/L), both albumin (the difference between maximum and minimum levels) and the standard deviation of albumin levels (SD-albumin) during the observation period showed a significant correlation with rFFM. Multiple linear regression analysis using variables such as rFFM, platelet number, and serum cholesterol levels,choline esterase, albumin, bilirubin, and ALT revealed that rFFM and ALT were significant and independent factors that influenced albumin or SD-albumin in cirrhotic ***: Our results indicate that cirrhotic patients with high rFFM showed less of a decrease in albumin levels, and that the muscle volume is one of the most important factors for maintaining serum albumins level in active cirrhosis. MRI Observations of Patellar Tendon Length Change after ACL Reconstruction with Hamstring Autografts

The post-operative patellar tendon length was studied to evaluate the possible tendon length change after anterior cruciate ligament（ACL） reconstruction with hamstring autografts. The Insall-Salvati index, modified Insall-Salvati index, curved modified Insall-Salvati index and Caton-Deschamps index were observed by MRI during a follow-up period of 12 weeks on 20 ACL reconstructed knees. The results showed no patellar baja or alta pre-existed on those ACL injured patients. After a follow-up period of 12 weeks, no patellar tendon length change was observed. It is suggested that the change of patella was not the primary reason that may contribute to the premature patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis after ACL reconstruction.

Patellofemoral MRI Alterations Following Single Bundle ACL Reconstruction with Hamstring Autografts Are Associated with Quadriceps Femoris Atrophy

High incidence of patellofemoral pain and patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis was found following anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)*** unstability of patellofemoral joint might be an important contribution *** study was designed to define the relationship between the unstability of patellofemoral joint and quadriceps femoris *** patients underwent MRI scan before ACL reconstruction and every two weeks after surgery,until 12 *** merchant’s patellar congruence angle,lateral inclination angle,and quadriceps femoris muscle cross-sectional area were measured and the relationship between the changes of angles and the ratio of quadriceps femoris atrophy was studied by multiple regression *** quadriceps femoris atrophy was observed after ACL reconstruction during the follow-up period of 12 *** merchant’s patellar congruence angle and lateral inclination angle significantly changed after *** alterations of the merchant’s patellar congruence angle were significantly correlated with the atrophy ratio of vastus medialis(coefficient=-5.76)and vastus lateralis(coefficient=8.35)during the follow-up period of 12 *** alterations of lateral inclination angle were significantly correlated with the atrophy ratio of vastus medialis(coefficient=20.62),vastus lateralis(coefficient=-11.38)and rectus femoris(coefficient=-0.469)during the follow-up period 12 *** sum up,ACL reconstruction can alleviate the dysfunction of patellofemoral joint to a certain ***,the unbalanced atrophy of quadriceps femoris once again destroyed the stability of patellofemoral joint following the operation,which might be one cause of patellofemoral joint pain and early onset of osteoarthritis after ACL ***,rehabilitation training that focuses on quadriceps femoris especially the vastus medialis shortly following operation is suggested.

Gold clusters and small nanoparticles supported on metal oxides could be prepared by deposition‐precipitation followed by microwave irradiation as a drying method and then *** drying method influenced the size of the Au ***(III)was partly reduced during conventional oven drying,resulting in Au *** contrast,Au(III)was preserved during microwave drying owing to rapid and uniform heating,and the Au diameter was minimized to1.4nm on *** method can be applied to several metal oxide supports having different microwave absorption efficiencies,such as MnO2,Al2O3,and *** catalysts exhibited higher catalytic activities for CO oxidation at low temperature and for selective aerobic oxidation of sulfide than those prepared by conventional methods.
