Strigolactones （SLs） are a class of plant hormones that control plant development in response to environmental conditions. In rice, mesocotyl elongation is regulated by SLs in the dark, while mesocotyls are longer in SL deficient or insensitive mutants. SLs are perceived by DWARF14 （D14）, which is a member of a small gene family. In this study, we examined the function of another D14 family gene in rice, D14 LIKE （D14L）, focusing on mesocotyl growth. The mesocotyls of D14L RNAi lines are longer than those of WT in the dark. This phenotype is enhanced when the D14L RNAi lines are combined with the d14 mutation, suggesting that D14 and D14L work independently to inhibit mesocotyl elongation. This phenotype is alleviated by the exogenous supply of GR24, a synthetic SL, suggesting that D14L is not necessary for SL signaling. D14L mRNA is predominantly expressed in vascular bundles and crown root primordia. Our results suggest that D14L and D14 confer their effects via an SL independent pathway and an SL signaling pathway respectively.

We measured electron temperatures through a hollow cathode-type discharge tube using several different floating probe methods. This method detected a shift in the floating potential when an AC voltage was applied to a probe through an intermediary blocking capacitor. The shift in the floating potential is described as a function of the electron temperature and the applied AC voltage. In this study, the effects of the frequency and waveform on the electron temperatures were systematically investigated. The electron temperature measured when using the floating probe method with applied sinusoidal and triangular voltages was lower than that measured with an applied rectangular *** value in the high frequency range was close to that of the tail electron temperature.

In this paper, the functionalities of microstructures for dragonfly wing during gliding flight are investigated. Three dragonfly-mimic airfoil-shaped wings with hybrid structures were designed and fabricated as: flat wing, zigzag-edged wing and zigzag-edged wing with pillar structure. Based on the wind tunnel experiments, the zigzag-edged wing structure significantly reduces the drag force in the gliding flight. Moreover, the drag reduction is more effective on the combination of the surface pillar and zigzag-edged structure. In addition, the zigzag-edged wing structure has less influence of Karman vortex street, and the surface pillars reduce the frictional drag and stabilized the streamline in the lower vortex region. Overall, the microstructure of the dragonfly wing is an important element in the aerodynamic study. These findings can enhance the knowledge of insect-mimic wing structure and facilitate the application of Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) in the gliding flight.

In this paper, the outline of the Mach 4 supersonic wind tunnel for the investigation of the supersonic internal flows in ducts was firstly described. Secondly, the location, structure and characteristics of the Mach 2 and Mach 4 pseudo-shock waves in a square duct were investigated by color schlieren photographs and duct wall pressure fluctuation measurements. Finally, the wall shear stress distributions on the side, top and bottom walls of the square duct with the Mach 4 pseudo-shock wave were investigated qualitatively by the shear stress-sensitive liquid crystal visualization method. The side wall boundary layer separation region under the first shock is narrow near the top wall, while the side wall boundary layer separation region under the first shock is very wide near the bottom wall.

Energy reduction of a submerged membrane bioreactor using a polytetrafluoroethylene （PTFE） hollow-fiber membrane

In this study, we modified a polytetrafluoroethylene （PTFE） hollow-fiber membrane element used for submerged membrane bioreactors （MBRs） to reduce the energy consumption during MBR processes. The high mechanical strength of the PTFE membrane made it possible to increase the effective length of the membrane fiber from 2 to 3 m. In addition, the packing density was increased by 20% by optimizing the membrane element configuration. These modifications improve the efficiency of membrane cleaning associated with aeration. The target of specific energy consumption was less than 0.4 kWh·m^-3 in this study. The continuous operation of a pilot MBR treating real municipal wastewater revealed that the MBR utilizing the modified membrane element can be stably operated under a specific air demand per membrane surface area （SADm） of 0.13 m^3·m^-2. hr I when the daily- averaged membrane fluxes for the constant flow rate and flow rate fluctuating modes of operation were set to 0,6 and 0.5m^3·m^-2·d^-1 respectively. The specific energy consumption under these operating conditions was estimated to be less than 0.37 kWh.m^-3. These results strongly suggest that operating an MBR equipped with the modified membrane element with a specific energy consumption of less than 0.4 kWh·m^-3 is highly possible.

Modeling the potential distribution of shallow-seated landslides using the weights of evidence method and a logistic regression model:a case study of the Sabae Area, Japan

A number of statistical methods are typically used to effectively predict potential landslide *** this study two multivariate statistical analysis methods were used (weights of evidence and logistic regression) to predict the potential distribution of shallow-seated landslides in the Kamikawachi area of Sabae City,Fukui Prefecture,***,the dependent variable (shallow-seated landslides) was divided into presence and absence,and the independent variables (environmental factors such as slope and altitude) were categorized according to their ***,using the weights of evidence (WE) method,the weights of pairs comprising presence ( w+ (i)) or absence ( w?(i)),and the contrast values for each category of independent variable (evidence),were *** the method that integrated the weights of evidence method and a logistic regression model,score values were calculated for each category of independent *** on these contrast values,three models were selected to sum the score values of every gird in the study *** to a receiver operating characteristic curve analysis (ROC),model 2 yielded the best fit for predicting the potential distribution of shallow-seated landslide hazards,with 89% correctness and a 54.5% hit ratio when the occurrence probability (OP) of landslides was 70%.The model was tested using data from an area close to the study region,and showed 94% correctness and a hit ratio of 45.7% when the OP of landslides was 70%.Finally,the potential distribution of shallow-seated landslides,based on the OP,was mapped using a geographical information system.

There is an increasing understanding of the roles that microsatellite instability （MSI） plays in Lynch syndrome （by mutations） and sporadic （by mainly epigenetic changes） gastrointestinal （GI） and other cancers. Defi- cient DNA mismatch repair （MMR） results in the strong mutator phenotype known as MSI, which is the hall- mark of cancers arising within Lynch syndrome. MSI is characterized by length alterations within simple repeated sequences called microsatellites. Lynch syn- drome occurs primarily because of germline mutations in one of the MMR genes, mainly MLH1 or MSH2, less frequently MSH6, and rarely PMS2. MSI is also observed in about 15% of sporadic colorectal, gastric, and en-dometrial cancers and in lower frequencies in a minor- ity of other cancers where it is often associated with the hypermethylation of the IVlLH1 gene. miRNAs are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level and are critical in many biological processes and cellular pathways. There is accumulating evidence to support the notion that the interrelationship between MSI and miRNA plays a key role in the pathogenesis of GI cancer. As a possible new mechanism underlying MSI, overexpression of m/R-IEE has been shown to downregulate expression of MLH1, IVlSH2, and MSH6. Thus, a subset of MSI-positive （MSI＋） cancers without known MMR defects may result from m/R-1E5 overexpression. Target genes of frameshift mutation for MSI are involved in various cellular func- tions, such as DNA repair, cell signaling, and apoptosis. A novel class of target genes that included not only epi- genetic modifier genes, such as HDAC2, but also miRNA processing machinery genes, including TARBP2 and XPO5, were found to be mutated in MSI＋ GI cancers. Thus, a subset of MSI＋ colorectal cancers （CRCs） has been proposed to exhibit a mutated miRNA machinery phenotype. Flexible continuous plastic films are used to produce various products, including optical films and packaging materials, because plastic film is suited to use in mass production manufacturing processes. Generally, the web handling process is applied to convey the plastic film, which is ultimately rewound into a roll using a rewinder. In this case, wrinkles, slippage and other defects may occur if the rewinding conditions are inadequate. In this paper, the authors explain the development of a rewinder system that prevents wound roll defects—primarily starring and telescoping. The system is able to prevent such defects by optimizing the rewinding conditions of tension and nip-load. Based on the optimum design technique, the tension and nip-load are calculated using a 32-bit personal computer. Our experiments have also empirically shown that this rewinder system can prevent roll defects when applying optimized tension and nip-load. Additionally, inexperienced operators can control this system easily.

Objective:To investigate the effect of human contraceptive(HC) as ability to suppress the reproductive success of blow fly,Chrysomya megacephala(Fabricius)(***) and offspring under controlled laboratory ***:Adult *** were fed with low(0.036 mg/mL) and high dose(0.072 mg/mL) HC(Microgest~?,Thailand),containing levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol,in their drinking water for 7 *** experiments were set;experimentⅠwith fed only in parental males,experimentⅡwith fed only in parental females and experimentⅢwith fed in both males and *** experiments were then maintained for 3 generations after crossing and ***:A lower ovariole production and less fully mature ovarioles were evident in F1,F2 and F3 than control when parent males,females and both had been fed with high dose *** changes during spermatogenesis in F1,F2 and F3 testes was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy(TEM),showing the low level of condensed chromatin,necrotic chromatin,irregularities and degenerated nuclear envelope in the nucleus. In the cytoplasm,mitochondrial swelling,rough endoplasmic reticulum swelling as well as vacuolated cytoplasm were *** for the sperm per se,we found the degenerated nuclei and/ or incomplete mitochondrial derivative,axoneme and vacuolated *** deformity in F1,F2 and F3 ovariole,ultrastructural alteration observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) included malformations involving fragile enveloping peritoneal sheath,cracked ovarioles, peel away chorion,crumbled eggshell and incomplete development;whereas TEM presented malformed and disorganized mass of cells,proteic yolk granules and vacuolated vesicles. Conclusions:Administer of HC to adult *** caused ovariole reduction,less matured ovariole and affected cellular changes in testes and ovariole of offspring up to F3.
