As open substructures of fullerenes,aromaticπ-bowls are promising candidates as new organic semiconductors,as well as attractive hosts for fullerenes.We demonstrate herein the synthesis and characterization of a novel C_(2v)symmetricπ-bowl,pyracyleno[6,5,4,3,2,1-pqrstuv]pentaphene(3).Bowl 3 was equipped with two distinctive reactive sites,allowing for bromination and cross-coupling reactions to readily yield functionalized bowls with two 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl(5)and triethylsilyl(TES)-ethynyl(6)substituents,respectively.Variable-temperature 1H NMR analysis and density functional theory(DFT)calculations indicated bowl-to-bowl inversions of 3,5,and 6 at room temperature.By alternating the substituents,the crystal structures of the threeπ-bowls 3,5,and 6 could be controlled from 1D linear to 1D slipped to 2D herringbone packing motifs,providing insight into the packing behavior ofπ-bowls.1H NMR titration study indicated that the TES-ethynyl substituent enhanced the ability ofπ-bowl to bind C_(70)with an association constant of 2485 M−1.The C_(70)molecules withπ-bowls 3 and 6 formed 1:1 complexes,in which C_(70)molecules aggregated into zig-zag and 1D linear arrays,respectively.The hole mobility of 2.3 cm^(2)V^(−1)^s(−1)and electron mobility of 0.16 cm^(2)V^(−1)^s(−1)ofπ-bowl 3 and its complex with C_(70)were demonstrated,respectively,which proved a great value for the development of aromaticπ-bowl semiconductors with tunable properties for organic electronic devices.

A Series of Soluble Planar Oligorylenes up to Hexarylene

Preparation of large rylenes often needs the use of solubilizing groups along the rylene backbone,which results in the distortion of the skeleton and thus broadening of the absorption spectrum.In this work,we successfully synthesized 2,5,8,16,19,22-hexakis[2,6-bis(tri-fluoromethyl)phenyl]hexarylene(H)by using an oxidative fusion reaction of perylene trimer in 5%yield.The product is soluble in common organic solvents and could be purified with column chromatography.Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the hexarylene core is not disturbed by the substituents very much and is almost planar.The longest absorption of H exhibits a sharp peak at 831 nm and an on-set at 875 nm in toluene with a small full-width-at-half-maximum(FWHM)of 660 cm^(-1).The molar extinction coefficient is as large as 131,000 M^(-1)cm^(-1).The substituents could not perturb the electronic properties of the hexarylene because aryl groups are perpendicular to the hexarylene core and the carbon atoms at 2,5,16,19-positions have negligible coeffi-cients on its HOMO and LUMO,estimated by theoretical calculations.As a result,the hexarylene having less absorption at the visible light region was stable enough in solution under the LED room light for more than 1 week.This strategy gives a useful guideline to establish the near-infrared materials that exhibit stability under ambient conditions.

Shear wave elastography(SWE)is now becoming an indispensable diagnostic tool in the routine examination of liver diseases.In particular,accuracy is required for shear wave propagation velocity measurement,which is directly related to diagnostic accuracy.It is generally accepted that the liver shear wave propagation velocity reflects the degree of fibrosis,but there are still few reports on other factors that increase the shear wave propagation velocity.In this study,we reviewed such factors in the literature and examined their mechanisms.Current SWE measures propagation velocity based on the assumption that the medium has a homogeneous structure,uniform density,and is purely elastic.Otherwise,the measurement is subject to error.The other(confounding)factors that we routinely experience are primarily:(1)Conditions that appear to increase the viscous component;and(2)Conditions that appear to increase tissue density.Clinically,the former includes acute hepatitis,congested liver,biliary obstruction,etc,and the latter includes diffuse infiltration of malignant cells,various storage diseases,tissue necrosis,etc.In any case,it is important to evaluate SWE in the context of the entire clinical picture.

Intermittent compressive force induces cell cycling and reduces apoptosis in embryoid bodies of mouse induced pluripotent stem cells

In vitro manipulation of induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSCs) by environmental factors is of great interest for three-dimensional(3D) tissue/organ induction. The effects of mechanical force depend on many factors, including force and cell type. However,information on such effects in i PSCs is lacking. The aim of this study was to identify a molecular mechanism in i PSCs responding to intermittent compressive force(ICF) by analyzing the global gene expression profile. Embryoid bodies of mouse i PSCs, attached on a tissue culture plate in 3D form, were subjected to ICF in serum-free culture medium for 24 h. Gene ontology analyses for RNA sequencing data demonstrated that genes differentially regulated by ICF were mainly associated with metabolic processes,membrane and protein binding. Topology-based analysis demonstrated that ICF induced genes in cell cycle categories and downregulated genes associated with metabolic processes. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database revealed differentially regulated genes related to the p53 signaling pathway and cell cycle. q PCR analysis demonstrated significant upregulation of Ccnd1, Cdk6 and Ccng1. Flow cytometry showed that ICF induced cell cycle and proliferation, while reducing the number of apoptotic cells. ICF also upregulated transforming growth factor β1(Tgfb1) at both m RNA and protein levels, and pretreatment with a TGF-β inhibitor(SB431542) prior to ICF abolished ICF-induced Ccnd1 and Cdk6 expression. Taken together,these findings show that TGF-β signaling in i PSCs enhances proliferation and decreases apoptosis in response to ICF, that could give rise to an efficient protocol to manipulate i PSCs for organoid fabrication.

A Relation between Resolvents of Subdifferentials and Metric Projections to Level Sets

An equation concerning with the subdifferential of convex functionals defined in real Banach spaces and the metric projections to level sets is shown. The equation is compared with the resolvents of general monotone operators, and makes the geometric properties of differential equations expressed by subdifferentials clear. Hence, it can be expected to be useful in obtaining the steepest descents defined by the convex functionals in Banach spaces. Also, it gives a similar result to the Lagrange multiplier method under certain conditions.

Motivated to obtain the second critical point of a nonlinear differential equation, which is expressed by derivatives of convex functional defined on a Banach space, an estimate with is given to see the relation between f-1(0) and g-1(0). And both the Fréchet differentiability and the continuity of Fréchet derivative of every convex functional defined on an open subset of a Banach space are shown.

Background and purpose Atherosclerosis is a very complex process influenced by various systemic and local factors.Therefore,in patients with bilateral carotid plaques(BCPs),there may be differences in carotid plaque vulnerability between the sides.We aimed to investigate the differences in BCP characteristics in patients with BCPs using magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging(MR-VWI).Methods Participants with BCPs were selected for subanalysis from a multicentre study of Chinese Atherosclerosis Risk Evaluation II.We measured carotid plaque burden,identified each plaque component and measured their volume or area bilaterally on MR-VWI.Paired comparisons of the burden and components of BCPs were performed.Results In all,540 patients with BCPs were eligible for analysis.Compared with the right carotid artery(CA),larger mean lumen area(p<0.001),larger mean wall area(p=0.025),larger mean total vessel area(p<0.001)and smaller normalised wall index(p=0.006)were found in the left CA.Regarding plaque components,only the prevalence of lipid-rich necrotic core(LRNC)in the left CA was higher(p=0.026).For patients with a vulnerable plaque component coexisting on both sides,only the intraplaque haemorrhage(IPH)volume(p=0.011)was significantly greater in the left CA than in the right CA.Conclusions There were asymmetries in plaque growth and evolution between BCPs.The left carotid plaques were more likely to have larger plaque burden,higher prevalence of LRNC and greater IPH volume,which may contribute to the lateralisation of ischaemic stroke in the cerebral hemispheres.

BACKGROUND Although the role of p53 in the evolution and prognosis of gastric cancer(GC)has been extensively examined,the exact mechanism of action is incompletely understood.In the last years,p53-target genes were supposed to be involved in the p53 pathway.One of them is the tumor-suppressor gene Maspin,which codifies the protein with the same name.Maspin activity depends on its subcellular localization.To our knowledge,the possible role of TP53 gene in Maspin subcellular localization,in GC cells,has not yet been studied in a large number of human samples.AIM To evaluate the possible role of wild-type and mutated p53 in Maspin subcellular localization.METHODS The present study included 266 consecutive patients with GC in which TP53 gene status,and mutations in exons 2 to 11,respectively,were analyzed and correlated with immunohistochemical expression of p53 and Maspin.RESULTS None of the 266 cases showed mutations in exon 9.The rate of TP53 mutations was 33.83%.The mutation rate was slightly higher in distally-located GCs,with a lower degree(≤5 buds/high power fields)of dyscohesivity(P<0.01).The wildtype cases had a longer survival,compared with mutant GCs,especially in patients without lymph node metastases,despite the high depth of tumor infiltration(P=0.01).The Dukes-MAC-like staging system was proved to have the most significant independent prognostic value(P<0.01).The statistical correlations proved that TP53 gene mutations in exon 7 might induce knockdown of Maspin,but wild-type p53 can partially restore nuclear Maspin expression and decrease the metastatic potential of gastric adenocarcinoma cells.CONCLUSION Downregulated Maspin might be induced by mutations in exon 7 of the TP53 gene but wild-type p53 can partially restore nuclear Maspin expression.These findings should be proved in experimental studies.

A predual of a predual of B_σ and its applications to commutators

A predual of B_σ-spaces is investigated. A predual of a predual of B_σ-spaces is also investigated,which can be used to investigate the boundedness property of the commutators. The relation between Herz spaces and local Morrey spaces is discussed. As an application of the duality results, one obtains the boundedness of the singular integral operators, the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operators and the fractional integral operators, as well as the commutators generated by the bounded mean oscillation(BMO) and the singular integral operators.What is new in this paper is that we do not have to depend on the specific structure of the operators. The results on the boundedness of operators are formulated in terms of B_σ-spaces and B_σ-spaces together with the detailed comparison of the ones in Herz spaces and local Morrey spaces. Another application is the nonsmooth atomic decomposition adapted to B_σ-spaces.

Moxibustion Promotes Formation of Granulation in Wound Healing Process through Induction of Transforming Growth Factor-β in Rats

Objective:To examine the effect of moxibustion on the wound healing process and its mechanism using a rat wound model.Methods:Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into a sham-treated group(n=30,wound surgery only)and a moxibustion group(n=30,wound treated with moxibustion).Circular fullthick ness skin wounds were produced in rats.Moxibustion was applied to the edge of wound and was continued on alternating days till 14 days after surgery,followed by measurement of wound size.Expression of collagens,prolyl-4-hydroxylase(P4H)and transtorming growth factor-β(TGF-β)were evaluated by histochemical study and real-time polymerase chain reaction.Results:The size of the wound lesion was significantly reduced in rats treated with moxibustion as compared to that in sham-treated rats at 4-10 days after wounding(P<0.01).Moxibusti on stimulated mRNA expressi on of collage ns at 4 days(P<0.01),but not at 7 days,accompa nied by enhanced proliferation of P4H-positive fibroblasts.Of importanee,expression of TGF-β in tissue from the wound lesio n treated with moxibusti on was sign ifica ntly in creased as compared to that in sham-treated rats at 4 days(P<0.01 or P<0.05),but not at 7 days.Conclusions:The treatment with moxibustion promoted the wound healing process in the early phase through proliferation of fibroblasts and rapid formation of granulation,possibly mediated by induction of TGF-β which is a key molecule in the physiological process of wound healing.Moxibustion can be expected to be effective as complementary treatment for intractable ulcers.
