Joint Angle Correction in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Its Reliability Analysis Based on Phase Dispersion Quantification

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis is a form of autoimmune disease characterized by synovitis that can ultimately cause joint deformities and impaired functioning. The cartilage destruction is one of the most important indicators for diagnosis and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and it is radiographically manifested as joint space narrowing. Issue: In the literature, the joint space narrowing progression between a baseline and its follow-up finger joint images can be quantified by using image registration algorithm. We found that the inconsistencies of joint angles may lead to characteristic mismatches and thus severely affect the accuracy of joint space narrowing quantifications. Methods: In this work, we introduce a rotation invariant phase only correlation in joint space narrowing quantification for the joint angle correction. Further, we propose a confidence index to quantify the quantification reliability of phase only correlation based on phase dispersion in phase difference spectrum. Conclusion: In our clinical experiments, the proposed quantification method can effectively overcome and manage the mismatch due to the inconsistency of joint angles. Additionally, the confidence index shows a high consistency with the joint space narrowing progression examinations manually done by a trained radiologist and one radiological technologist.

Cerebral lipiodol embolism related to a vascular lake during chemoembolization in hepatocellular carcinoma:A case report and review of the literature

A male patient underwent conventional transcatheter chemoembolization for advanced recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Even after the injection of 7 m L of lipiodol followed by gelatin sponge particles, the flow of feeding arteries did not slow down. A repeat angiography revealed a newly developed vascular lake draining into systemic veins; however, embolization was continued without taking noticing of the vascular lake. The patient's level of consciousness deteriorated immediately after the procedure, and non-contrast computed tomography revealed pulmonary and cerebral lipiodol embolisms. The patient's level of consciousness gradually improved after 8 wk in intensive care. In this case, a vascular lake emerged during chemoembolization and drained into systemic veins, offering a pathway carrying lipiodol to pulmonary vessels, the most likely cause of this serious complication. We should be aware that vascular lakes in HCC may drain into systemic veins and can cause intratumoral arteriovenous shunts.

Dense sintered bodies of proton conducting BaZrO3 (BZ) and Y-doped BaZrO3 (BZ-Y) were obtained at 1600℃ for a short sintering time of 5 hours, by the addition of NiO as a sintering promotion agent. The relative density and grain growth of samples, Ni-doped BaZrO3 (BZ-N) and Ni, Y co-doped BaZrO3 (BZ-NY), were increased with increasing Ni addition. The sinterability of BZ-NY was greatly improved just to add only 0.6 mol% Ni and the relative density of this sample was more than 98%, in contrast to that of 60% at most for BZ-Y without Ni addition. Electrical conductivity of BZ-NY added Ni 1.0 mol%, BaZr0.91Ni0.01Y0.08O3-α, was more than 10-3 ***-2 at 900℃?in a wet 1% hydrogen atmosphere, which value was 10 times higher than that of BZ-Y. In addition, the kind of electrical conduction carrier and an ionic transport number were also examined by employing various concentration cells. It was found that the proton conduction was dominant for both BZ-N and BZ-NY samples, although BZ-NY showed scarcely oxygenion conduction approximately 10% in a high temperature range higher than 800℃. From these results, as mall amount of Ni addition found to be effective for improvement of both the sinterability and the electrical conductivity.

Effects of Orbital Motion on the Boundary Layer Flow on a Spinning Disk

The objective of this study is to experimentally examine the effects of orbital motion on the boundary layer flow on a spinning disk. The boundary layer flow on the disk is visualized by the oil flow method, and velocity in the boundary layer is measured by the hot-wire method. For the oil flow pattern in the case of spinning motion only, streaks are clearly observed on the disk as transient vortices, but by adding orbital motion to the spinning motion, we find that streaks are not observed in a certain range of orbital conditions. With increasing orbital motion speed, the laminar re- gion becomes narrower and transition is promoted from the inward region of the disk, regardless of the direction of ro- tation. Also, with the addition of orbital motion, the velocity profile in the boundary layer becomes more asymmetric with respect to the spin axis of the disk. Furthermore, stationary vortices do not appear on the disk when the orbital speed is beyond a certain critical value. Therefore, the lack of streaks in the oil film pattern when orbital motion is added is due to the spatiotemporal unsteadiness of the flow field on the disk.

FPGA-Based Stream Processing for Frequent Itemset Mining with Incremental Multiple Hashes

With the advent of the IoT era, the amount of real-time data that is processed in data centers has increased explosively. As a result, stream mining, extracting useful knowledge from a huge amount of data in real time, is attracting more and more attention. It is said, however, that real- time stream processing will become more difficult in the near future, because the performance of processing applications continues to increase at a rate of 10% - 15% each year, while the amount of data to be processed is increasing exponentially. In this study, we focused on identifying a promising stream mining algorithm, specifically a Frequent Itemset Mining (FIsM) algorithm, then we improved its performance using an FPGA. FIsM algorithms are important and are basic data- mining techniques used to discover association rules from transactional databases. We improved on an approximate FIsM algorithm proposed recently so that it would fit onto hardware architecture efficiently. We then ran experiments on an FPGA. As a result, we have been able to achieve a speed 400% faster than the original algorithm implemented on a CPU. Moreover, our FPGA prototype showed a 20 times speed improvement compared to the CPU version.

Direct Instruction by an Experienced Surgeon Can Shorten the Learning Curve for Laparoscopic-Assisted Distal Gastrectomy

Aim: Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy (LADG) with regional lymph node dissection is a treatment option for patient with early gastric cancer. However, LADG is a technically complex and advanced procedure, which is challenging for inexperienced surgeons. In this report, we retrospectively evaluated the learning curve for LADG of a single surgeon with no previous experience in LADG and the usefulness of direct instruction by a surgeon experienced in LADG in shortening the learning curve. Patients and Methods: This study was analyzed 80 consecutive patients, who underwent LADG by a single surgeon (first assistant in 10 cases and operator in 70 cases) between January 2008 and December 2012. Patients were divided into 3 sequential groups of 10 (training period), 30 (learning period), and 40 (operating period) cases in each group. Median operation time and estimated blood loss for these 3 groups were determined. Other learning indicators, including transfusion requirement, postoperative complications, number of lymph node harvested, and rate of conversion open gastrectomy, were also evaluated. Results: During the training period, median operation time and estimated blood loss were 219.5 min and 83.0 ml, respectively. During the learning period, the operation time was significantly longer than that of training period. In the operating period, the operation time was significantly lesser than that during the learning period. However, the operation time was not different from that during the training period and reached a plateau. The estimated blood loss during the operating period was significantly lesser than that during the learning period. The difference in the number of lymph nodes retrieved between each group was not significant. Conclusions: Direct instructions by an experienced surgeon can decrease the number of cases required for learning. A Multithreaded CGRA for Convolutional Neural Network Processing

Convolutional neural network (CNN) is an essential model to achieve high accuracy in various machine learning applications, such as image recognition and natural language processing. One of the important issues for CNN acceleration with high energy efficiency and processing performance is efficient data reuse by exploiting the inherent data locality. In this paper, we propose a novel CGRA (Coarse Grained Reconfigurable Array) architecture with time-domain multithreading for exploiting input data locality. The multithreading on each processing element enables the input data reusing through multiple computation periods. This paper presents the accelerator design performance analysis of the proposed architecture. We examine the structure of memory subsystems, as well as the architecture of the computing array, to supply required data with minimal performance overhead. We explore efficient architecture design alternatives based on the characteristics of modern CNN configurations. The evaluation results show that the available bandwidth of the external memory can be utilized efficiently when the output plane is wider (in earlier layers of many CNNs) while the input data locality can be utilized maximally when the number of output channel is larger (in later layers).

A High Performance and Energy Efficient Microprocessor with a Novel Restricted Dynamically Reconfigurable Accelerator

In the era of Internet of Things, the battery life of edge devices must be extended for sensing connection to the Internet. We aim to reduce the power consumption of the microprocessor embedded in such devices by using a novel dynamically reconfigurable accelerator. Conventional microprocessors consume a large amount of power for memory access, in registers, and for the control of the processor itself rather than computation;this decreases the energy efficiency. Dynamically reconfigurable accelerators reduce such redundant power by computing in parallel on reconfigurable switches and processing element arrays (often consisting of an arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and registers). We propose a novel dynamically reconfigurable accelerator “DYNaSTA” composed of a dynamically reconfigurable data path and static ALU arrays. The static ALU arrays process instructions in parallel without registers and improve energy efficiency. The dynamically reconfigurable data path includes registers and many switches dynamically reconfigured to resolve operand dependencies between instructions mapped on the static ALU array, and forwards appropriate operands to the static ALU array. Therefore, the DYNaSTA accelerator has more flexibility while improving the energy efficiency compared with the conventional dynamically reconfigurable accelerators. We simulated the power consumption of the proposed DYNaSTA accelerator and measured the fabricated chip. As a result, the power consumption was reduced by 69% to 86%, and the energy efficiency improved 4.5 to 13 times compared to a general RISC microprocessor.
