Finite-difference time-domain simulation of partial discharges in a gas insulated switchgear

It is important to estimate the current magnitude and charge amount of a partial discharge (PD) in a gasinsulatedswitchgear (GIS). In this study, electromagnetic fields generated by a PD in an 84 kV-class three-phase GIS fortesting have been measured with a voltage probe installed on the outer surface of an insulation spacer of the GIS tank,and the corresponding simulations have been carried out using the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. FDTD-computed time-domain voltages across spacers agree reasonably well with the correspondingmeasured ones, and the current magnitude of PD and its charge amount have been estimated.

Low-cost room-temperature sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are expected to promote the development of stationary energy storage applications. However, due to the large size of Na+, most Na+ host structures resembling their Li+ counterparts show sluggish ion mobility and destructive volume changes during Na ion (de)intercalation, resulting in unsatisfactory rate and cycling performances. Herein, we report a new type of sodium iron phosphate (Na0.71Fe1.07PO4), which exhibits an extremely small volume change (~ 1%) during desodiation. When applied as a cathode material for SIBs, this new phosphate delivers a capacity of 78 mA·h·g−1 even at a high rate of 50 C and maintains its capacity over 5,000 cycles at 20 C. In situ synchrotron characterization disclosed a highly reversible solid-solution mechanism during charging/discharging. The findings are believed to contribute to the development of high-performance batteries based on Earth-abundant elements.

Influence of cognitive impairment on cardiac mortality after percutaneous coronary intervention in very elderly patients: a retrospective observational study

Background Cognitive impairment (CI) increases cardiac mortality among very elderly patients. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ischemic heart disease (IHD) patients is considered a favorable strategy for decreasing cardiac mortality. Here, we investigated the influence of CI on cardiac mortality after PCI in very elderly patients. Methods We performed a retrospective observational analysis of patients who received PCI between 2012 and 2014 at the South Miyagi Medical Center, Japan. IHD patients over 80 years old who underwent the Mini-Mental State Examination for CI screening during hospitalization and/or who had been diagnosed with CI were included. Participants were divided into CI and non-CI groups, and cardiac mortality and incidence of adverse cardiac events in a 3-year follow-up period were compared between groups. Statistical analyses were performed using the t-test,χ^2 test, and multivariable Cox regression analysis, with major comorbid illness and conventional cardiac risk factors as confounders. Results Of 565 patients, 95 were included (41 CI, 54 non-CI). Cardiac mortality during the follow-up period was significantly higher in the CI group (36%) compared with the non-CI group (13%)(OR = 4.3, 95% CI: 1.56–11.82, P < 0.05). CI was an independent cardiac prognostic factor after PCI and, for CI patients, living only with a CI partner was an independent predictor of cardiac death within three years. Conclusions CI significantly affected cardiac prognosis after PCI in very elderly patients, particularly those living with a CI partner. To improve patients’ prognoses, social background should be considered alongside conventional medical measures.

We differentiated the effects of Cu films deposited on single crystalline a-,r-,and c-plane sapphire substrates upon graphene films synthesized with atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition(CVD).The data illustrate that the realization of high-crystalline Cu film is dependent not only on the crystallinity of underlying substrate,but also on the symmetric match of crystallographic geometry between metal film and *** also systematically investigated the effects of PMMA removal on the Raman ID/IG and IG/I2D values of transferred *** results reveal that different PMMA removal methods do not alter the ID/IG values;instead,the residue of PMMA increases the IG/I2D values and the thermal decomposition of PMMA leads to higher IG/I2D values than the removal of PMMA with *** effects of PMMA removal on variations of the Raman spectra are also discussed.

Because the transient O3 injury of leaves is lost with time, the evaluation of O3 effect on the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) is difficult. Thus, the authors examined Fv/Fm in rice leaves exposed to different O3 concentrations (0, 0.1, and 0.3 cm3·m-3, expressed as O0, O0.1, and O0.3) under different dark adaptation periods (0, 1, 5, 10, 20, and 30 min, expressed as D0, D1, D5, D10, D20, and D30) to ascertain its optimum time span. Fv/Fm was inhibited by O3;however in the O0 and O0.1 plants, it recovered during dark adaptation. In the O0.3 plants, Fv/Fm decreased gradually with time. F0 was found to be increased by O3, and it increased further in the O0.3 plants during dark adaptation. Under a high light intensity, Fm was decreased by O3, and the O3-induced damage to Fv/Fm was therefore more pronounced. However, the sensitivity of

Direct numerical simulation(DNS)of turbulent planar jet with a second-order chemical reaction(A+B→R)is performed to investigate the processes of mixing and chemical reactions in spatially developing turbulent free shear *** A is premixed into the jet flow,and reactant B is premixed into the ambient *** is performed at three different Damk¨ohler numbers(Da=0.1,1,and 10).Damk¨ohler number is a ratio of a time scale of a flow to that of chemical reactions,and in this study,the large Da means a fast chemical reaction,and the small Da means a slow chemical *** visualization of velocity field shows that the jet flow is developed by entraining the ambient *** visualization of concentration of reactant A shows that concentration of reactant A for Da=1 and 10 becomes very small in the downstream region because the chemical reaction consumes the reactants and reactant A is diffused with the jet *** comparison of the profiles of chemical reaction rate and concentration of product R,it is found that product R for Da=10 is produced by the chemical reaction at the interface between the jet and the ambient fluids and is diffused into the jet flow,whereas product R for Da=0.1 is produced in the jet flow after reactants A and B are well mixed.
