Gene expression analyses suggest that more than 1000–2000 genes are expressed predominantly in mouse and human *** functional analyses of hundreds of these genes have been performed,there are still many testis-enriched genes whose functions remain *** gene function using knockout(KO)mice is a powerful tool to discern if the gene of interest is essential for sperm formation,function,and male fertility in *** this study,we generated KO mice for 12 testis-enriched genes,1700057G04Rik,4921539E11Rik,4930558C23Rik,Cby2,Ldhal6b,Rasef,Slc25a2,Slc25a41,Smim8,Smim9,Tmem210,and Tomm20l,using the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated protein 9(CRISPR/Cas9)*** designed two gRNAs for each gene to excise almost all the protein-coding regions to ensure that the deletions in these genes result in a null *** tests of KO mice reveal that these 12 genes are not essential for male fertility,at least when individually ablated,and not together with other potentially compensatory paralogous *** results could prevent other laboratories from expending duplicative effort generating KO mice,for which no apparent phenotype exists.

Operations research(OR)is a scientific approach for solving various types of societal problems and making decisions to deal with these problems ***,we briefly describe the history of OR,focusing on applying OR to public sectors,and then provide its characterization as a scientific method for decision ***,OR activities in Japan are introduced,emphasizing three major roles:(i)quantitative data analysis,(ii)mathematical modeling analysis,and(iii)theory building *** provide an example for each of these three types of major *** upon the analyses,we seek an Asian OR applicable to policy making in the public ***,we provide a summary and discuss future perspectives for OR.

There is a need for the prevention of upper extremity injuries that affect a large number of competitive baseball *** available evidence alludes to three possible ways to prevent these injuries:1) regulation of unsafe participation factors,2) implementation of exercise intervention to modify suboptimal physical characteristics,and 3) instructional intervention to correct improper pitching *** these three strategies,instruction of proper pitching technique is under-explored as a method of injury ***,the purpose of this review was to explore the utility of pitching technique instruction in prevention of pitching-related upper extremity injuries by presenting evidence linking pitching technique and pitching-related upper extremity injuries,as well as identifying considerations and potential barriers in pursuing this approach to prevent *** kinematic parameters measured using laboratory-based motion capture system have been linked to excessive joint loading,and thus pitching-related upper extremity *** we gain more knowledge about the influence of pitching kinematics on joint loading and injury risk,it is important to start exploring ways to modify pitching technique through instruction and feedback while considering the specific skill components to address,mode of instruction,target population,duration of program,and ways to effectively collaborate with coaches and parents.

Burst buffer has become a major component to meet the I/O performance requirement of HPC bursty *** paper proposes Gfarm/BB that is a file system for a burst buffer efficiently exploiting node-local storage *** node-local storages improve storage performance,they are only available during the job ***/BB should have better access and metadata performance while it should be constructed on-demand before the job *** improve the read and write performance,it exploits the file descriptor passing and remote direct memory access(RDMA).It improves the metadata performance by omitting the persistency and the redundancy since it is a temporal file *** RDMA,writes and reads bandwidth are improved by 1.7x and 2.2x compared with IP over InfiniBand(IPoIB),*** achieves 14700 operations per second in the directory creation performance,which is 13.4x faster than the fully persistent and redundant *** construction of Gfarm/BB takes 0.31 seconds using 2 *** benchmark and ARGOT-IO application I/O benchmark show the scalable performance improvement by exploiting the locality of node-local *** with BeeOND,Gfarm/BB shows 2.6x and 2.4x better performance in IOR write and read benchmarks,respectively,and it shows 2.5x better performance in ARGOT-IO.

Forecasting Daily Electric Load by Applying Artificial Neural Network with Fourier Transformation and Principal Component Analysis Technique

In this paper,we propose a hybrid forecasting model(HFM)for the short-term electric load forecasting using artificial neural network(ANN),discrete Fourier transformation(DFT)and principal component analysis(PCA)techniques in order to attain higher prediction ***,we estimate Fourier coefficients by the DFT for predicting the next-day load curve with an ANN and obtain approximate load curves by applying the inverse discrete Fourier *** curves,together with other input variables,are given to the ANN to predict the next-day hourly load ***,we predict PCA scores to obtain approximate load curves in the first step,which are then given to the ANN again in the second *** DFT and PCA models use input variables such as calendrical and meteorological data as well as past electric *** those models for forecasting hourly electric load in the metropolitan area of Japan for January and May in 2018,we train our models using historical data since January *** forecast results show that the HFM consisting of“ANN with DFT”and“ANN with PCA”predicts next-day hourly loads more accurately than the conventional three-layered ANN *** corresponding mean average absolute errors show 2.7%for ANN with DFT,2.6%for ANN with PCA and 3.0%for the conventional ANN *** also find that in May,when electric demand is smaller with smaller fluctuations,forecasting errors are much smaller than January for all the ***,we can conclude that the HFM would contribute to attaining significantly higher forecasting accuracy.

We first discuss the relationship between the optimal track maintenance scheduling model and an efficient detection method for abnormal track irregularities given by the longitudinal level irregularity displacement (LLID). The results of applying the cluster analysis technique to the sampling data showed that maintenance operation is required for approximately 10% of the total lots, and these lots were further classified into three groups according to the degree of maintenance need. To analyze the background factors for detecting abnormal LLID lots, a principal component analysis was performed;the results showed that the first principal component represents LLIDs from the viewpoints of the rail structure, equipment, and operating conditions. Binomial and ordinal logit regression models (LRMs) were used to quantitatively investigate the determinants of abnormal LLIDs. Binomial LRM was used to characterize the abnormal LLIDs, whereas ordinal LRM was used to distinguish the degree of influence of factors that are considered to have a significant impact on LLIDs.

Influence of image classification accuracy on saliency map estimation

Saliency map estimation in computer vision aims to estimate the locations where people gaze in images. Since people tend to look at objects in images, the parameters of the model pre-trained on ImageNet for image classification are useful for the saliency map estimation. However, there is no research on the relationship between the image classification accuracy and the performance of the saliency map estimation. In this study, it is shown that there is a strong correlation between image classification accuracy and saliency map estimation accuracy. The authors also investigated the effective architecture based on multi-scale images and the up-sampling layers to refine the saliency-map resolution. The model achieved the state-of-the-art accuracy on the PASCAL-S, OSIE, and MIT1003 datasets. In the MIT saliency benchmark, the model achieved the best performance in some metrics and competitive results in the other metrics.

Studies of the Methane Steam Reforming Reaction at High Pressure in a Ceramic Membrane Reactor

The effects of temperature and pressure on the steam reforming of methane （CH4＋H2O→← 3H2＋CO） were investigated in a membrane reactor （MR） with a hydrogen permeable membrane. The studies used a novel silica-based membrane prepared by using the chemical vapor deposition （CVD） technique with a permeance for H2 of 6.0×10^-8 mol·m^-2.s^-***^-1 at 923 K. The results in a packed-bed reactor （PBR） were compared to those of the membrane reactor at various temperatures （773-923 K） and pressures （1-20 atm, 101.3-2026.5 kPa） using a commercial Ni/MgAl2O4 catalyst. The conversion of methane was improved significantly in the MR by the countercurrent removal of hydrogen at all temperatures and allowed product yields higher than the equilibrium to be obtained. Pressure had a positive effect on the hydrogen yield because of the increase in driving force for the permeance of hydrogen. The yield of hydrogen increased with pressure and reached a value of 73× 10^-6 mol·g^-1 .s^-1 at 2026.5 kPa and 923 K which was higher by 108% than the value of 35×10^-6 mol·g^-1.s^-1 obtained for the equilibrium yield. The results obtained with the silica-based membrane were similar to those obtained with various other membranes as reported in the literature.

Background： Despite an increasing awareness of the risk of medical errors, few data sources are available to highlight the characteristics and patterns of medical errors in the clinical management of rheumatoid arthritis （RA）. The present study aimed to evaluate medical malpractice claims associated with the management of RA and other atltoimmune connective tissue diseases （ACTDs）. Methods： We analyzed 38 ACTD-associated closed claims extracted from a total of 8530 claims processed between July 2004 and June 2014 by the Tokyo headquarters office of Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Incorporated, a leading malpractice insurer in Japan. Results： RA was the most common ACTD assessed in this study, accounting for 20 cases. Although the male-to-female ratio among these cases was 5：15, in accordance with the general demographic distribution of RA, the proportion of patients older than 60 years （77.8%） was relatively high as the general range of RA susceptibility is 30-50 years. The analysis of allegation types among RA cases revealed statistically significant differences from non-RA cases （Fisher＇s exact test） as well as the following key findings： diagnosis-related allegations were absent （P 〈 0.01 ）, whereas medication-related allegations were distinctively common （P=0.02）. Clinical processes related to the assessment process were most vulnerable to breakdown and leading to negligence identified with subsequent medication-related allegations, particularly among RA cases. Conclusions： The characteristics of malpractice claims associated with RA management, including the high frequency of medication-related allegations, breakdowns in the assessment process, and high claim numbers among patients older than 60 years, suggest the importance of caution exercised by physicians when administering immunosuppressants for the clinical treatment of RA.
