In this work, the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and combined effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and tetrahydrofuran(THF) on thermodynamic and kinetic properties of CH4+C2H6+C3H8hydrate formation have been studied. Four different concentrations of sodium dodecyl sulfate(100 ppm, 500 ppm,1000 ppm and 1500 ppm) have been used to see its effect on phase equilibrium condition and formation kinetics. Though sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) does not vary the pressure–temperature condition of hydrate formation, it has a prominent favorable effect on induction time, gas consumption, storage capacity and formation rate. The addition of 3%(mol) tetrahydrofuran(THF) to water + SDS system results in large shifts in phase equilibrium boundary to lower pressure and higher temperature. It has been noticed that the addition of tetrahydrofuran further enhances the formation rate. So the mixture of sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and tetrahydrofuran(THF) can be effectively used as promoter for storing natural gas as hydrate.

AIM: To evaluate the influence of different intraocular lens(IOL) designs made of PMMA on posterior capsular opacification(PCO) and compare with foldable designs.· METHODS: Phacoemulsification and IOL implantation was done in one eye of 24 New Zealand White rabbits, with IOL of two different designs (Square edged or round edge) and two different materials(PMMA or HEMA). After three months, the animals were sacrificed and enucleated. Evaluation of PCO included posterior view, migration of anterior capsular epithelial cells to the posterior capsule following epithelial-mesenchymal transition were assessed by staining the histological sections of posterior capsule by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) and Periodic acid- Schiff (PAS). The IOLs were extracted and stained with HE to evaluate the presence of adherent cells on the lens surface. · RESULTS: PCO was highest with round edged rigid lens. There was no significant difference in the PCO between the square edged PMMA and square edged foldable lens.· CONCLUSION: It is the design of the IOL not the material that offers protection on PCO formation.

The radial tidal current field accounts for the formation of the radial sand ridges in the South Yellow Sea. Understanding the formation and evolution of this radial tidal current field is vital to assessing the morphodynamic features in the area. A semi-enclosed rectangular basin with and without a coastal barrier was schematized from the topography of the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. The 2D tidal current field in this basin was simulated using the DELFT3D-FLOW model. The concept of tidal wave refraction, which highlights the effect of the sloped or stepped submarine topography on the propagation of the tidal waves, was introduced to explain the formation of the radial tidal current field. Under the effect of tidal wave refraction, co-phase lines of the counterclockwise rotating tidal wave and incident tidal wave are transformed into clockwise and counterclockwise deflections, respectively, leading to the convergence and divergence of the flow field. Regardless of whether a coastal barrier exists or not, the outer radial tidal current field might emerge over certain topography. The responses of the radial tidal current field in this basin to the environmental variations such as coastline changes and bottom erosions were discussed. Results show that local protrusion near the focal point of the radial tidal current field will have limited effects on the location of the tidal system. However, a remarkable shift of the amphidromic point toward the entrance and central axis of this basin and a movement of the focal point of the radial tidal current field toward the entrance could be caused by the significant seaward coastline advance and submarine slope erosion.

Angiotensin II (Ang II) is known to elicit cardiac fibrosis by activating the AT1 receptor and CD44 expression in the in vivo model. However, the cellular/molecular mechanisms underlying cardiac fibrosis are still not well understood. This study examines the roles of the AT1 receptor and CD44 gene expression in collagen synthesis through Ang II stimulated cardiac fibroblasts. Fibroblasts were isolated from the neonatal rat hearts;the activation of fibroblasts was evaluated using the assays of cell viability and migration, and silencing of CD44 gene expression was conducted with small interfering RNA (siRNA). Results showed that Ang II significantly increases the cell proliferation and migration in a dose-dependent manner. Upon activation, the protein levels of TGF-β1, Smad2, Smad4 and collagen I were significantly increased (all p < 0.05 vs. unstimulated cells), but these changes were significantly downregulated by the AT1 receptor blocker, telmisartan (all p < 0.05 vs. Ang II activated cells). Furthermore, mRNA and protein level of CD44 were upregulated, and there was a linear correlation between CD44 and TGF-β1 as demonstrated by Pearson correlation analysis (r = 0.955, p < 0.01). Gene transfection of fibroblasts with Ad-CD44 siRNA, as evidenced by low levels of CD44 mRNA and protein, significantly reduced the production of collagen I. In summary, these results indicate that the proliferation, migration and collagen production from Ang II activated cardiac fibroblasts are potentially mediated by the AT1 receptor and CD44. Such a signaling mechanism could be crucial for the production of collagen and the development of tissue fibrosis in the heart.
