Effects of quantitative feed restriction and sex on carcass traits,meat quality and meat lipid profile of Morada Nova lambs

Background: An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feed restriction(Fr) and sex on the quantitative and qualitative carcass traits of Morada Nova lambs. Thirty-five animals with an initial body weight of 14.5 ± 0.89 kg and age of 120 d were used in a completely randomized study with a 3 × 3 factorial scheme consisting of three sexes(11 entire males, 12 castrated males and 12 females) and three levels of feeding(ad libitum – AL and 30% and 60% Fr).results: Entire males presented greater hot and cold carcass weights(P castrated males and females. However, the hot carcass yield was higher for females and castrated males than for entire males. Luminosity values were influenced(P re males presenting higher values than castrated males and *** showed higher(P concentrations of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid in the meat of the longissimus thoracis muscle. The meat of animals submitted to AL intake and 30% Fr showed similar(P > 0.05) concentrations, and the concentrations of palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and conjugated linoleic acid were higher(P r. The meat of females had a higher ω6/ω3 ratio and lower h/H ratio, and females had greater levels of feeding. The meat of animals on the 60% Fr diet had a greater ω6/ω3 ratio, lower h/H ratio and lower concentration of desirable fatty acids in addition to a greater atherogenicity index(AI) and thrombogenicity index(TI).conclusion: Lambs of different sexes had carcasses with different quantitative traits without total influence on the chemical and physical meat characteristics. The lipid profile of the meat was less favorable to consumer health when the animals were female or submitted to 60% feed restriction.

Performance on the Functional Movement Screen in older active adults

Background:The Functional Movement Screen(FMS^(TM)) has become increasingly popular for identifying functional limitations in basic functional *** exploratory and descriptive study was undertaken to confirm feasibility of performing the FMS^(TM) in older active adults,assess prevalence of asymmetries and to evaluate the relationship between functional movement ability,age,physical activity levels and body mass index(BMI).Methods:This is an observational study;97 men(n = 53) and women(n = 44) between the ages of 52 and 83 *** was computed and self-reported physical activity levels were *** were grouped by age(5-year intervals),BMI(normal,over-weight,and obese)and *** participant's performance on the FMS^(TM) was digitally recorded for later ***:The youngest age group(50–54 years) scored highest in all seven tests and the oldest age group(75+) scored lowest in most of the tests compared to all other age *** subjects in the 'normal weight' group performed no different than those who were in the 'overweight' group;both groups performed better than the 'obese' *** the 97 participants 54 had at least one *** pairwise correlations between the total FMS^(TM) score and age(r =-0.531),BMI(r =-0.270),and the measure of activity level(r = 0.287) were significant(p r all).conclusion:FMS^(TM) scores decline with increased BMI,increased age,and decreased activity *** screen identifies range of motion-and strength-related *** FMS^(TM) can be used to assess functional limitations and *** research should evaluate if a higher total FMS^(TM) score is related to fewer falls or injuries in the older population.

Miombo woodlands near human settlements are under significant pressures from human activities,with negative consequences on their structure and *** studies are limited,we assessed the structure and species composition of a portion of miombo woodland along an increasing disturbance gradient from a national park,through a buffer zone to communal lands in northeast *** concentric plots of 2 and 11 m radii were established in each area to record woody species composition,diameter,height,basal area,density and volume as well as evidence of *** of site,growth stage and their interaction on vegetation diversity and structural parameters were tested using a general linear model(GLM).Principal component analysis(PcA) tested the association between species and site and ANOVA the differences in the level of disturbance across *** diversity did not differ between sites except for evenness,which increased with *** and richness were greater in seedlings and saplings than mature trees across sites,*** and mature tree diameters differed significantly between *** and density of mature trees declined with increasing disturbance while seedling densities peaked at intermediate disturbance levels(buffer zone).Tree harvesting,was more evident in the buffer zone and in the communal area relative to the national *** contrast,fire frequency was greater in the national park and in the buffer zone relative to the communal *** results of this study identify a true miombo woodland dominated by Brachystegia boehmii with a stable population,as illustrated by an inverse-J shape in diameter class distribution on all sites,and that these woodlands are generally resilient to disturbances,maintaining similar species composition and structure at various levels of ***,continued monitoring of disturbance levels and miombo woodland response is recommended to ensure sustainable utilisation of

Additive manufacturing of Sm-Fe-N magnets

Isotropic Sm-Fe-N bonded magnets were obtained by additive manufacturing(AM). The technique used was the so-called powder bed fusion(PBF) and the feedstock was composed of a polymeric binder(PA-12) and Sm-Fe-N flake particles(Nitroquench-P). The AM set-up equipment uses a computer-controlled cO2 laser beam to melt the binder and constructs magnets layer-by-layer. In order to develop this study, a cylinder with 10 mm of both height and diameter was selected as the shape of samples. Specimens were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XrD). Magnetic properties were measured in a hysteresis graph. XrD results indicate that there is no degradation of the main magnetic phase(SmFe7 Nx). In the AM component, porous regions were identified on SEM micrographs, as well as magnetic particles and polymeric binder. remanence values(Br) as great as 0.3 T are achieved, while intrinsic coercivities remain in the range from 616 up to 642 kA/m. An additional isostatic compression of the parts results in greater remanence, which is directly proportional to the density increase. coercivity is also sensitive to the porosity decrease, probably due to a better interlocking of particles. current results indicate AM as a promising route for near net-shape manufacturing of Sm-Fe-N permanent magnets, a market niche yet to be widely explored.

calcium isotope fractionation and its controlling factors over authigenic carbonates in the cold seeps of the northern South china Sea

In this study, we analyzed stable calcium isotope results of authigenic carbonates from two cold seep areas of the Dongsha area and the Baiyun Sag in the northern South china Sea. The stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen as well as the mineral composition of authigenic carbonates were used to investigate control calcium isotope fractionation. The δ44/40ca ratios of the southwestern Dongsha area samples ranged from 1.21‰ to 1.52‰ and the ratio of the Baiyun Sag sample was 1.55‰ of the SrM915a isotope standard. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the carbonate samples consisted of dolomite, calcite and aragonite, with small amounts of high-Mg calcite and siderite. The δ13c values of the carbonates of the southwestern Dongsha area varied between δ49.21‰ and δ16.86‰ of the Vienna PeeDee Belemnite (VPDB) standard and the δ18O values ranged from 2.25‰ to 3.72‰ VPDB. The δ13c value of the Baiyun Sag sample was 2.36‰ VPDB and the δ18O value was 0.44‰ VPDB. The δ13c values of the carbonates of the southwestern Dongsha area revealed there is methane seeping into this area, with a variable contribution of methane-derived carbon. The sampled carbonates covered a range of δ13c values suggesting a dominant methane carbon source for the light samples and mixtures of δ13c values for the heavier samples, with possibly an organic or seawater carbon source. The δ18O values indicated that there is enrichment in 18O, which is related to the larger oxygen isotope fractionation in dolomite compared to calcite. The results of the Baiyun Sag sample exhibited normal seawater carbon and oxygen isotopic values, indicating that this sample is not related to methane seepage but instead to precipitation from seawater. The relatively high δ44/40ca values indicated either precipitation at comparatively high rates in pore-water regimes with high alkalinity, or precipitation from an evolved heavy fluid with high degrees of ca consumption (raleigh type fractionation). Arginine-glycine-aspartic acid （rGD） dendrimer-based nanopatterns on poly（L- lactic acid） were used as bioactive substrates to evaluate the impact of the rGD local surface density on the chondrogenic induction of adult human mesenchymal stem cells. During chondrogenic commitment, active extracellular matrix （EcM） remodeling takes place, playing an instructive role in the differentiation process. Although three-dimensional environments such as pellet or micromass cultures are commonly used for in vitro chondrogenic differentiation, these cultures are rather limited with respect to their ability to interrogate cells in celI-EcM interactions. In the present study, the nanopatterns of the tunable rGD surface density were obtained as a function of the initial dendrimer concentration. The local rGD surface density was quantified through probability contour plots for the minimum interparticle distance, constructed from the corresponding atomic force microscopy images, and correlated with the cell adhesion and differentiation response. The results revealed that the local rGD surface density at the nanoscale acts as a regulator of chondrogenic commitment, and that intermediate adhesiveness of cells to the substrates favors mesenchymal cell condensation and early chondrogenic differentiation.
