Cholinesterase Activity as an Indicator of Health Risks among Kou Valley Farmers

Introduction: Pesticides are currently an essential component of agricultural production techniques for controlling pests and weeds. In Burkina Faso, non-compliance with good practice in the use of pesticides poses a real health problem for the population. this study examines the health risks associated with pesticide management in rice-growing areas. Material and Methods: A field survey was conducted in Bama, involving farmers, focusing on their socio-demographic characteristics, pesticide usage, and health effects. Cholinesterase levels were measured in subsample of farmers using a portable device. Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel, calculating means and percentages for various practices. Health consultations, protection methods, and pesticide management were studied. Erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity was compared before and after treatment. Data were categorised into classes based on inhibition levels, and correlation analyses determined relationships between variables such as age, years of experience, and cholinesterase activity. Results: the results indicate that rice cultivation is mainly carried out by a fairly young population, with nearly 63% being under the age of 50. Common poor practices in pesticide use include improper storage and reuse of leftover pesticides. Seven types of pesticides were identified, including organophosphates such as glyphosate, which was used in 26.7% of cases. this organophosphate has resulted in class B poisoning, causing a 30% - 50% reduction in erythrocyte cholinesterase activity. the health effects of pesticide use are felt by agricultural farmers through various symptoms of poisoning. Conclusion: to reduce the occurrence of pesticide poisoning, it is essential to launch information and awareness campaigns among the population and farmers to promote safe practices in pesticide use in Bama, Burkina Faso.

Background: this study assessed the effect of a nutrition education intervention. this intervention aimed to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of mothers on food safety in the peri-urban areas of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Methods: A total of 243 mothers of children under 5 years in the peri-urban of Bobo-Dioulasso were administered the FAO questionnaire for food safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices assessment during two cross-sectional surveys, before and after the intervention, in January and October 2017. the intervention included two components consisting of a theoretical phase (counselling and discussion) and cooking demonstrations implemented for ten months. to account for the before-and-after design of the study, the McNemar’s test was used to assess the effect of the intervention on food safety KAP of mothers of children under 5 years. Results: the mean age of mothers was 29 ± 6.2 years and 50.6% of them were between 20 and 29 years old. One for knowledge (cooking thoroughly with, p-value = 0.0001) and another for attitudes (perceived benefits of reheating leftovers before eating them, p-value = 0.0001), significantly increased after the intervention. In terms of food safety practices, all the indicators (cleaning of dirty surfaces, plates and utensils and storage of perishable foods) significantly increased (all p = 0.0001 Conclusion: this study provided some evidence of an effective nutrition education intervention for improving maternal KAP on food safety for their child’s feeding.

Case Study for Undetermined Mosquito Species by Polymerase Chain Reaction in Western Burkina Faso

Introduction: Malaria eradication campaigns all over the world are largely based on parasite and vector control. Vector identification, whether morphological or molecular, is an essential component of vector control. this study analyzed the possible causes of indeterminate polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results for mosquito species in Western part of Burkina Faso. Methodology: From July 2021 to November 2021, mosquitoes were collected during the period of high malaria transmission in the village of Séguéré, Houet province, Burkina Faso, and morphologically identified. After DNA extraction, samples were amplified by sine 200× PCR to identify species of the Anopheles gambiae complex. Indeterminate samples were then selected for further analysis. the parameters studied were: DNA dilution, the effect of protocol adjusting, and the type of protocol used. Results: A total of 130 “indeterminate” DNAs diluted 1:10 were analyzed. After dilution, the mean amount was 14.73 ± 3.59 ng/μL and absorbance 1.71 ± 0.1. PCR chain reaction yielded 94.62% (123/130) anopheline species in SINE PCR, 5.38% (7/130) “negative”. A significant difference between SINE PCR before dilution and after dilution was observed (P tification tests carried out using other protocols gave no positive results. From these results, we note that the adaptation of the protocol significantly reduced the polymerase amplification results of the species. Conclusion: It is therefore necessary to respect the amplification protocols. However, the persistence of “indeterminate” results suggests that further studies should be carried out to shed more light on the subject.

the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ItNs) is increasingly compromised by the prevalence of malaria vectors resistant to pyrethroids. In response to this issue, a new generation of ItNs has been developed that incorporate synergistic components, such as piperonyl butoxide (PBO). the purpose of this study is to provide entomological evidence for the efficacy of a PBO-based ItN brand at the village level, serving as a basis for decision-making before large-scale net deployment. During the high malaria transmission period, ItNs were distributed in each group and vector sampling was conducted biweekly in selected households. Bionomic data were collected to assess the resistance of wild An. gambiae populations to various chemical insecticides. there was a significant disparity in total An. gambiae sl. collected between the ItN arms, the intervention arm (ItN arms), and the control arm (P = 0.003). An. coluzzi was identified as the predominant species in the study area, as confirmed by PCR analysis. Analysis of the blood-feeding inhibition rate revealed that 100% permethrin + PBO ItN exhibited significantly greater inhibition than 66.81% permethrin only ItN. According to the log-time probit regression analysis, permethrin exhibited a knockdown time of 256 min without synergists, while it decreased to 139 min (P = 0.001) when pre-exposed to PBO. the evidence from this trial supports the use of PBO ItNs over standard ItNs for pyrethroids to combat pyrethroid resistance and improve protection against malaria for both individuals and communities, particularly in areas with high pyrethroid resistance.

In sugar industries,the growing amount of sugarcane bagasse ash(SBA),a byproduct released after burning bagasse for producing electricity,is currently causing environmental *** residual ash displays a pozzolanic potential;and hence,it has potential as a cement *** study focuses on enhancing suitability of SBA through incorporating ground blast furnace slag(BFS)in manufacturing self-compacting concretes(SCCs).For this purpose,SBA was processed by burning at 700°C for 1 h,before being ground to the cement fineness of 4010 cm2/*** mixtures were prepared by changing the proportions of SBA and BFS(i.e.,10%,20%,and 30%)in blended systems;and their performance was *** results showed that the presence of amorphous silica was detected for the processed SBA,revealing that the strength activity index was above 80%.the compressive strength of SCC containing SBA(without BFS)could reach 98%–127%of that of the control;combination of SBA and 30%BFS gets a similar strength to the control after 28 *** durability,the 10%SBA+30%BFS mix exhibited the lowest risk of ***,the joint use of SBA and BFS enhanced significantly the SCC’s sulfate ***,a hyperbolic formula for interpolating the compressive strength of the SBA-based SCC was proposed and validated with error range estimated within±10%.

Frequency spectrum sharing between radar and communication systems has recently attracted substantial *** consider the coexistence between a massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO)downlink system and MIMO radar to enable the operation of these two systems with minimal mutual *** an asymptotic analysis,we show that by using more antennas at the base station(BS),we can improve the performance of massive MIMO,while keeping the interference to the radar system ***,if we use a large number of antennas at the BS and make the transmit power inversely proportional to the number of antennas,we can avoid the interference from the massive MIMO system to the radar system,with no compromise in the performance of the massive MIMO ***-form expressions for the probability of detection of the radar system and the downlink spectral efficiency of the massive MIMO system,are ***,we propose a power allocation scheme which selects the transmit powers at the MIMO radar and BS to maximize the probability of detection for the MIMO ***,the optimal power allocation can be determined in *** results provide valuable insights into the practical coexistence between massive MIMO and radar systems.
