Persistence of four dominant psammophyte species in central Inner Mongolia of China under continual drought

Clarifying the persistence time of seedlings of dominant species under continual drought will help us understand responses of ecosystems to global climate change and improve revegetation efforts. Drought tolerance of four dominant psammophytic shrub species occurring in different environments was studied in the semi-arid areas of Inner Mongolian grasslands. Seedlings of Hedysarum laeve, Caragana korshinskii, Artemisia sphaerocephala and Artemisia ordosica were grown under four air temperature regimes （night/day： 12.5/22.5℃, 15/25℃, 17.5/27.5℃ and 20/30℃） within climate （air temperature and humidity） controlled, naturally lit glasshouses with a night/day relative humidity of 70%/50%. Pots were watered to field capacity for each temperature treatment. Soil water condition was monitored by weighting each pot every day using an electronic balance. Date of seedling death for each treatment was recorded and the dead plants were harvested. Plant dry weights were determined after oven drying at 80℃ for 3 days. Two Artemisia species had higher growth rates than H. laeve and C. korshinskii, and the growth of all four species increased with increasing temperatures. The two Artemisia species had the highest leaf biomass increment, followed by C. korshinskii, and then H. laeve. Shoot biomass increment was higher for A. ordosica and C. korshinskii, intermediate for A. sphaerocephala and lowest for H. laeve. C. korshinskii had the highest root biomass increment. The final soil water content at death for all four species varied from 1% to 2%. C. korshinskii, A. sphaerocephala, H. laeve and A. ordosica survived for 25-43, 24-41, 26-41 and 24-37 days without watering, respectively. C. korshinskii, A. sphaerocephala, H. Laeve, and A. ordosica seedlings survived longer at the lowest temperatures （12.5/22.5℃） than at the highest temperatures （20/30℃） by 18, 17, 15 and 13 days, respectively. Effect of high magnetic field on phase transformation temperature and microstructure of Fe-based Alloys

The effect of a high magnetic field up to 30T on phase transformation temperature and microstructure of Fe-based alloys has been reviewed. A high magnetic field accelerates ferrite transformation, changes the morphology of the transformed microstructures and increases the A3 and A1 temperature. In a magnetic field of 30T, the A1 temperature increases by about 37.1℃ for Fe-0.8C, the A3 temperature for pure Fe increases by about 33.1℃. The measured transformation temperature data are not consistent with calculation results using Weiss molecular field theory. Ferrite grains are elongated and aligned along the direction of magnetic field in Fe-0.4C and Fe-0.6C alloys by ferrite transformation, but elongated and aligned structure was not found in pure Fe, Fe-0.05C alloy and Fe-1.5Mn-0.11C-0.1V alloy.

A combination of hydrophilic interaction chromatographic(HILIC) column and a weakly acidic cation-exchange resin(WCX) column was used for simultaneous separation of inorganic anions and cations by ion chromatography(IC).Firstly,the capability of HILIC column for the separation of analyte ions was evaluated under acidic eluent conditions.The columns used were SeQuant ZIC-HILIC(ZIC-HILIC) with a sulfobetaine-zwitterion stationary phase(ZIC-HILIC) and Acclaim HILIC-10 with a diol stationary phase(HILIC-10).When using tartaric acid as the eluent,the HILIC columns indicated strong retentions for anions,based on ion-pair interaction.Especially,HILIC-10 could strongly retain anions compared with ZIC-HILIC.The selectivity for analyte anions of HILIC-10 with 5 mmol/L tartaric acid eluent was in the order of I-> NO-3 > Br-> Cl-> H2PO-4.However,since HILIC-10 could not separate analyte cations,a WCX column(TSKgel Super IC-A/C) was connected after the HILIC column in series.The combination column system of HILIC and WCX columns could successfully separate ten ions(Na+,NH+4,K+,Mg2+,Ca2+,H2PO-4,Cl-,Br-,NO-3 and I-) with elution of 4 mmol/L tartaric acid plus 8 mmol/L 18-crown-6.The relative standard deviations(RSDs) of analyte ions by the system were in the ranges of 0.02%-0.05% in retention times and 0.18%-5.3% in peak areas through three-time successive injections.The limits of detection at signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were 0.24-0.30 μmol/L for the cations and 0.31-1.2 μmol/L for the anions.This system was applied for the simultaneous determination of the cations and the anions in a vegetable juice sample with satisfactory results.

Minute liver metastases from a rectal carcinoid: A case report and review

We here report a 43-year-old male patient with minute liver metastases from a rectal carcinoid.Hepatic nodules were diagnosed during surgery,although they were not diagnosed by preoperative computed tomography or ultrasound examination.The rectal carcinoid was resected together with liver metastases and the patient has had no disease recurrence for 5 years following postoperative treatment of hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy(HAIC) using 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)and oral administration of 1-hexylcarbamoyl-5-fluorouracil(HCFU).In 2003,a health check examination indicated presence of occult blood in his stool.Barium enema study revealed a rectal tumor in the lower rectum and colonoscopy showed a yellowish lesion with a size of 30 mm in diameter.Pathological examination of the biopsy specimen indicated that the rectal tumor was carcinoid.Although preoperative imaging examinations failed to detect liver metastases,2 min nodules were found on the surface of liver during surgery.A rapid pathological examination revealed that they were metastatic tumors from the rectal carcinoid.Low anterior resection was performed for the rectal tumor and the pathological report indicated that there were 4 metastatic lymph nodes in the rectal mesentery.The patient received treatment by HAIC using 5-FU plus oral administration of HCFU and survived for 5 years.We also review world-wide current treatments and their efficacy for hepatic metastases of carcinoid tumors.

＜正＞Restricted sensory experience in early life often leads to a remarkable adaptation so that animals can make maximal use of information available in a particular environment.Such restriction inevitably leaves some neurons in the brain unused or underused for an original purpose.How do cortical neurons adapt to the statistical structure of restricted environment to represent sensory signals efficiently? We addressed the question by measuring receptive field of neurons in cats reared with vertical-pass cylindrical lenses.Such lenses severely limit the range of orientation experienced by the animals essentially to vertical only,filtering out horizontal and oblique orientations.Aspect ratios of receptive fields of neurons in these animals show a marked elongation in the length dimension compared with those from normal cats.The responses of individual neurons were also examined by presenting gratings of various combinations of orientation and spatial frequency.Orientation tuning of neurons in these animals was significantly sharpened for neurons tuned to vertical and broadened for those tuned to other orientations,compared with those in normal animals.Our results indicate that limited visual experience early in life not only increases the proportion of cells tuned to the experienced parameter,but also causes changes in the shape and tuning properties of receptive fields of individual neurons.

A Case Report of Kissing Molars Class III

Kissing molars (KMs), first reported by Van Hoof in 1973, refer to molars with occlusal surfaces that contact each other in a single follicular space while their roots extend in opposite directions. This is a case of a 20-year-old male who presented with complaints of right mandibular molar pain with cold water contact and occlusion. Panoramic and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images revealed impaction of the right mandibular third and fourth molars, with the occlusal surfaces contacting each other while the roots extended in opposite directions. KMs are classified according to the impaction of the mandibular first and second molars (Class I), second and third molars (Class II), and third and fourth molars (Class III). Our patient was considered Class III. Given the patient’s preference for surgical treatment, successful teeth extraction and extirpation were performed under intravenous sedation. The patient’s postoperative course was unremarkable. We describe a case of KMs Class III with a cystic variant assessed by panoramic and CBCT images. We additionally review all KMs Class III reported in the literature.

Bending vibration analysis of rotating machineries using multibody dynamics technology — development of computer program RotB

This paper examines a computer program developed to analyze the vibration of rotating machineries based on theories of vibration and multibody dynamics （MBD）. Bending vibration problems of rotating machineries have generally been categorized as either linear or nonlinear. Linear problems can be formulated by standard methods and nonlinear problems can be formulated by MBD methods. In our study, nonlinear problems are treated by the use of a general-purpose computer program, RecurDyn （RD）. In the program we developed, rotor bending vibration analysis （RotB） structural properties such as shafts, rotating rotary disks, unbalanced masses and foundation structures are modeled as multibody elements. Also, nonlinearities such as contact, non-symmetrical shaft effects, bearing characteristics, nonlinear restoring and damping characteristics in the bearings are taken into account. The computational results demonstrate the validity of RotB.

Evaluation of Patient-Specific Quality Assurance for Carbon Ion Radiotherapy Using Full Energy Scanning Method at QST Hospital

Purpose: Patient-specific QA (PSQA) measurements for carbon ion radiotherapy (CIRT) are critical components of processes designed to identify discrepancies between calculated and delivered doses. We report the results of PSQA conducted at the QST Hospital during the period from September 2017 to March 2018. Methods: We analyzed PSQA results for 1448 fields for 10 disease sites with various target volumes, target depths and number of energy layers. For the PSQA, all the planned beams were recalculated on a water phantom with treatment planning software. The recalculated dose distributions were compared with the measured distributions using a 2D ionization chamber array at three depths, including 95% of the area of the prescription dose. These recalculated dose distributions were evaluated using the 3%/3mm gamma index with a passing threshold of 90%. Results: The passing rates for prostate, head and neck, and bone and soft tissue were 96.8%, 99.3%, and 91.7%, respectively. Additionally, 94.7% of lung plans with low energy beams passed. Overall, the CIRT in the QST Hospital reached a high passing rate of more than 95%. Although the remaining 5% failed to pass, there was no dependence between measurement depth and disease sites in these failures. Conclusion: Using PSQA measurements, we confirmed consistency between the planned and delivered doses for CIRT using the full energy scanning method.
