Nutrition status and Helicobacter pylori infection in patients receiving hemodialysis

Chronic kidney disease(CKD) patients receiving hemodialysis(HD) often develop gastrointestinal abnormalities over their long treatment period. In general, prognosis in such patients is poor due to the development of protein-energy wasting(PEW). Therefore, it is important to clarify the etiology of PEW and to establish better strategies to deal with this condition. Chronic Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) infection in the gastric mucosa has a close association with not only the development of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer, but is also associated with abnormal plasma and gastric mucosal ghrelin levels that are seen in malnutrition. It is unclear whether H. pylori infection of the gastric mucosa is directly associated with prognosis in HD patients by affecting ghrelin levels. Recent studies show that the prevalence of H. pylori infection in HD patients is significantly lower than in subjects with normal renal function. In the natural history of H. pylori infection in HD patients, the prevalence of infection decreases as the length of time on HD increases. The severity of gastric mucosal atrophy has been suggested as the major determinant of ghrelin levels in these patients, and eradication therapy of H. pylori improves nutritional status by increasing serum cholinesterase and cholesterol levels, especially in patients with mildto-moderate gastric mucosal atrophy. Prompt H. pylori eradication to inhibit the progress of gastric atrophy may be required to prevent this decrease in ghrelin levels and subsequent PEW and improve the prognosis of HD patients by improving their nutritional status.

This paper proposes a simple yet efective algorithm to magnify 2D/3D images with preserving discontinuities of *** algorithm is based on the partition of unity(PU)approximation,which ofers many advantages such as smooth representation,noise-robustness,and precise ***,PU encounters difculties when scaling images and maintaining boundaries within images owing to the nature of its *** overcome this problem,we propose an approximation that preserves *** is realized by dividing the local spherical support of PU into two parts along a locally detected discontinuity and by individually approximating intensities on each side of the *** algorithm is suitable for magnifying a variety of images,including scanned documents,pictures,and CT-scanned *** demonstrate the efectiveness of the proposed method,we show some experimental results for 2D/3D images.

Multi-view dynamic three-dimensional reconstruction has typically required the use of custom shutter-synchronized camera rigs in order to capture scenes containing rapid movements or complex topology changes. In this paper, we demonstrate that multiple unsynchronized low-cost RGB-D cameras can be used for the same purpose. To alleviate issues caused by unsynchronized shutters, we propose a novel depth frame interpolation technique that allows synchronized data capture from highly dynamic 3 D scenes. To manage the resulting huge number of input depth images, we also introduce an efficient moving least squares-based volumetric reconstruction method that generates triangle meshes of the scene. Our approach does not store the reconstruction volume in memory,making it memory-efficient and scalable to large *** implementation is completely GPU based and works in real time. The results shown herein, obtained with real data, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method and its advantages compared to stateof-the-art approaches.

Electrocatalytic evolution of oxygen on NiCu particles modifying conductive alumina/nano-carbon network composite electrode

In this paper, a novel electrically conductive alumina/nano-carbon network (NCN) composite material was used as an electro- catalyst carrier. A NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode was prepared by electrodepositing NiCu particles onto the surface of the conductive alumina/NCN composite. Morphology, composition, crystalline structure and electrochemical properties of the NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode were investigated. The results showed that NiCu particles can be deposited onto the surface of the alumina/NCN composite by a coelectrodeposition method. NiCu particles in the form of solid solution with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure were relatively uniformly distributed over the carbon layer of the conductive ceramic between alumina grains. As-resulted NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode had a remarkably enhanced electrochemical activity and high stabilization for oxygen evolution reaction, which indicated its potential application with enhanced performance to oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, based on the electrochemical measurement, the mechanism of the OER on the NiCu/Al2O3 /NCN composite electrode was discussed.

Precision surgery with the genetic assessment for operable pancreatic cancer beyond the radiological assessment alone

We congratulate *** and colleagues for their recently published study entitled“Precision oncology in surgery:Patient selection for operable pancreatic cancer”in Annals of surgery(1).In this unique study,the authors tried to define preoperative clinical and molecular characteristics in order to improve patient selection for operable pancreatic *** ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)remains the most lethal type of human cancer due to its high chemoresistance and invasiveness(2).In resected PDAC,the median overall survival has increased from 22.1 to 35 months during the past 10 years,largely owing to improvements in adjuvant therapies(3,4).On the other hand,the high recurrence rate even in patients who underwent curative resection,and chemoresistance in the recurrent sites to current systemic chemotherapies(FOLFIRINOX and nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine),are major issues in the treatment for unselected PDAC patient *** resection offers the only chance of cure,but surgery can be associated with significant morbidity and decreased activity of daily life(ADL),especially in the Whipple procedure(pancreaticoduodenectomy).Recently,the importance of preoperative chemotherapy even in operable PDAC has been increasingly recognized(5).Although molecular markers are being used more frequently to select patients for systemic targeted agents,only imaging modalities are used to stage patients and to assess their suitability for operative *** on primary surgery or a neoadjuvant approach are made without evaluation of biological measures of tumor aggressiveness,or of the risk of occult metastatic disease.
