Perception gaps for recognition behavior between staff nurses and their managers

Nurse managers play a critical role in improving the work environment. Important leadership characteristics for nurse managers include visibility, accessibility, communication, recognition, and support. The nurse manager’s recognition behaviors strongly influence the job satisfaction of staff nurses. In our previous study, we investigated how staff nurses perceived the nurse manager’s recognition behaviors and revealed that there was a divergence in practical approaches to these behaviors between the nurse manager and the staff. We assume that one factor causing this divergence could be perception gaps between the nurse manager and the staff. The aim of this study, therefore, was to uncover what types of perception gaps exist between the nurse manager and staff nurses and whether the background of staff nurses, such as years of experience or academic background, could affect the staff nurses’ perceptions. This quantitative, cross-sectional study involved 10 hospitals in Japan. A total of 1425 nurses completed the questionnaire. The results showed that staff nurses considered “Respect job schedule preferences” to be the most important of the recognition behaviors. In contrast, nurse managers gave “Nurse manager meets with the staff nurses to discuss patient care and unit management” the highest score for importance. Four factors (marriage status, age, years of clinical experience, and training background) affected the professional awareness of recognition behaviors. Our results suggest that nurse managers need to consider these factors when they conduct recognition behaviors.

Conserved balance of hepatocyte nuclear DNA content in mononuclear and binuclear hepatocyte populations during the course of chronic viral hepatitis

AIM： TO analyze the percentages of hepatocytes with increased nuclear DNA content, i.e., tetraploid （4n） and octoploid （Sn） nuclei, and then compared mononuclear and binuclear hepatocyte populations： METHODS： The percentages of mononuclear diploid （2n）, 4n, and 8n hepatocytes and those of binuclear 2 × 2n, 2 × 4n, and 2 × 8n hepatocytes were determined with a method that can simultaneously measure hepatocyte nuclear DNA content and binuclearity in 62 patients with chronic hepatitis B or C. The percentage of 4n and 8n hepatocytes in the mononuclear hepatocyte population was compared with the percentage of 2 × 4n and 2 × 8n hepatocytes in the binuclear hepatocyte population. RESULTS： The percentages of 4n and 8n hepatocytes in mononuclear hepatocytes and 2 ×4n and 2 × 8n hepatocytes in binuclear hepatocytes were similar, regardless of the activity or fibrosis grade of chronic hepatitis and regardless of the infecting virus. CONCLUSION： The distribution of nuclear DNA content within mononuclear and binuclear hepatocyte populations was conserved during the course of chronic viral hepatitis.

The threat of biological and chemical terror acts remains a growing worldwide *** is therefore a need to develop appropriate technology for the detection of chemical and biological warfare agents,with early identification intended for use by first ***,we disclose the developed autonomous air sampling and detection system for evaluation of the presence of chemical and biological warfare agents that can be harmful to the *** current device utilizes the designed mist generator-assisted air collection system(338 l min^(−1))and biosensing chip technologies,such as electrochemical measurement,Au nanoparticle-based localized surface plasmon resonance,and rapid microfluidic chip PCR for detection of minute concentrations lower than the mean lethal dose(LD_(50))of nerve gases(sarin and VX),toxic proteins(BTX/A/Hc and ricin),and pathogens(anthrax simulant).An operation time of only 5–15 min is needed for the collection and detection;sample preparation is already integrated into the system without the need for direct human *** addition to the system’s sensitivity and ease of use,its portability makes it highly beneficial for first responders,which could aid in immediate risk assessment and mitigation of on-site events.

Feasibility Demonstrations of Liquid Turbine Power Generator Driven by Low Temperature Heats

Lower temperature waste heats less than 373 K have strong potentials to supply additional energies because of their enormous quantities and ubiquity. Accordingly, reinforcement of power generations harvesting low temperature heats is one of the urgent tasks for the current generation in order to accomplish energy sustainability in the coming decades. In this study, a liquid turbine power generator driven by lower temperature heats below 373 K was proposed in the aim of expanding selectable options for harvesting low temperature waste heats less than 373 K. The proposing system was so simply that it was mainly composed of a liquid turbine, a liquid container with a biphasic medium of water and an underlying water-insoluble low-boiling-point medium in a liquid phase, a heating section for vaporization of the liquid and a cooling section for entropy discharge outside the system. Assumed power generating steps via the proposing liquid turbine power generator were as follows: step 1: the underlying low-boiling-point medium in a liquid phase was vaporized, step 2: the surfacing vapor bubbles of low-boiling-point medium accompanied the biphasic medium in their wakes, step 3: such high momentum flux by step 2 rotated the liquid turbine (i.e. power generation), step 4: the surfacing low-boiling-point medium vapor was gradually condensed into droplets, step 5: the low-boiling-point medium droplets were submerged to the underlying medium in a liquid phase. Experiments with a prototype liquid turbine power generator proved power generations in accordance with the assumed steps at a little higher than ordinary temperature. Increasing output voltage could be obtained with an increase in the cooling temperature among tested ranging from 294 to 296 K in contrast to normal thermal engines. Hepatectomy is an effective surgical treatment for multiple bilobar liver metastases from colon cancer;however,one of the primary obstacles to completing surgical resection for these cases is an insufficient volume of the future remnant liver,which may cause postoperative liver *** induce atrophy of the unilateral lobe and hypertrophy of the future remnant liver,procedures to occlude the portal vein have been conventionally used prior to major *** report a case of a 50-year-old woman in whom two-stage hepatectomy was performed in combination with intraoperative ligation of the portal vein and the bile duct of the right hepatic *** procedure was designed to promote the atrophic effect on the right hepatic lobe more effectively than the conventional technique,and to the best of our knowledge,it was used for the first time in the present *** successful induction of liver volume shift as well as the following procedure,the patient died of subsequent liver failure after developing recurrent *** discuss the first case in which simultaneous ligation of the portal vein and the biliary system was successfully applied as part of the first step of two-stage hepatectomy.

Analysis of Film Generated on Various Stainless Steel Surfaces in Soy Sauce by EIS and XPS

This paper was developed the passivation phenomenon for various stainless steels in soy sauce by evaluation for the electrochemical impedance characteristic and the distribution of elements in the specimens measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is possible to show a passivation phenomenon using the electrical equivalent circuit that is assumed consisting of a series connection of two parallel RC circuits and a resistance of solution. By equivalent circuit analysis, the resistance of passive film and the corrosion resistance values of duplex stainless steels are 10 times higher than that of the austenitic stainless steels, the duplex stainless steels are superior in corrosion resistance to the austenitic stainless steels in soy sauce. In stainless steels with higher corrosion resistance, as for the element distribution in the passive film that had been generated to the stainless-steel surface, it was shown that Cr was concentrated to an outermost surface of the film by the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. And, the thickness of the passive film is thinner. When the high local Cr concentration is generated at the outermost surface of passive firm thus leading to the increase of the film resistance value, its corrosion resistance is enhanced, the corrosion current becomes smaller and corrosion resistance is heightened. The ratio of concentration of Cr is proportional to its film resistance value as well as its charge transfer resistance.

Knowledge and Tube Feeding Practices for Older Adult Patients among Japanese Registered Nurses

The aim of this study was to examine nurses’ thinking regarding the indications for tube feeding in older adults with eating difficulties and to determine whether the team approach can improve their knowledge and tube feeding practices. We sent self-administered questionnaires to 436 nurses and collected them from November to December 2010 (response rate, 70.0%). The results indicated that approximately 30% of the Japanese nurses thought that older patients with dementia should be on tube feeding and more than half of the nurses answered that tube feeding is indicated for aspiration-prone, frail, older adults. Moreover, our findings showed that nurses who organize multidisciplinary teams performed more interventions for dysphagia before introducing tube feeding than the reference group as analyzed by multivariate adjustment (odds ratio, 2.1-6.6). In conclusion, a multidisciplinary team approach is expected to make better decisions on the treatment and care of older patients with difficulty eating, including the need for tube

AIM To evaluate the relationship between the location of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and the efficacy of transarterial chemoembolization(TACE).METHODS We evaluated 115 patients(127 nodules), excluding recurrent nodules, treated with TACE between January 2011 and June 2014. TACE efficacy was evaluated according to m RECIST. The HCC location coefficient was calculated as the distance from the central portal portion to the HCC center(mm)/liver diameter(mm) on multiplanar reconstruction images rendered(MPR) to visualize bifurcation of the right and left branches of the portal vein and HCC center. The HCC location coefficient was compared between complete response(CR) and non-CR groups in Child-Pugh grade A and B *** The median location coefficient of HCC among all nodules, the right lobe, and the medial segment was significantly higher in the CR group than in the non-CR group in the Child-Pugh grade A patients(0.82 vs 0.62, P 0.05). On the other hand, in the Child-Pugh grade B patients, the HCC median location coefficient in each lobe and segment was not significantly different between in the CR and in the non-CR *** Improved TACE efficacy may be obtained for HCC in the peripheral zone of the right lobe and the medial segment in Child-Pugh grade A patients.
