Removal of Radioactivity from Sediment Mud and Soil and Use for Cultivation of Safe Vegetables in Fukushima, and Removal of Toxic Metals Using Photosynthetic Bacteria

The immobilized photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter shpaeroides SSI (SSI), cultured on porous 2 cm ceramic beads, effectively removed and recovered 20 mg/L of non-radioactive Cs (almost 100%) and Sr (≌50%), after 3 - 5 days of aerobic treatment. Toxic and heavy metals such as Hg, Cr, Pb and As were also removed, almost 100%, after 6days of aerobic treatment. A practical method of removal of radioactivity of 10 - 30 μSv/h, caused mainly by radioactive Cs released from the accident at the Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant on 11th March 2011, from sediment mud and soil in Fukushima, Japan, was also carried out. Using immobilized SSI beads, more than 90% and 42% - 73% of radioactive Cs was removed and recovered from sediment mud and soil, respectively, after 3 - 14 days of aerobic treatment in an outdoor 60 L vessel. The weight and mass of the harvested beads could be reduced by more than 97% after desiccation. This technology of removal and recovery had therefore, considerable advantages over other technologies that demanded very large storage facilities in Fukushima. After removal of radioactivity from polluted soil, vegetables like Komatsuna (Turrip leaves) and Chingensai (Green pakchoi) were cultivated on remediated soil. Safe vegetables grown on these treated soils showed a radioactivity content lower than the recommended limit for edible foods in Japan, i.e. less than <100 Bq/kg. Treatment by SSI beads, therefore, appeared to be a compact and suitable technology that could make significant contributions towards agricultural recovery in radioactively polluted areas of Fukushima.

The management of electronic waste(e-waste),which can be a source of both useful materials and toxic substances,depending on the processing method,is important for promoting material *** this study,we used the dioxin-responsive chemical-activated luciferase gene expression(DR-CALUX)assay combined with gas chromatographyehigh-resolution mass spectrometry to evaluate the levels of dioxin-like compounds in surface soils and river sediments collected in and around an e-waste-processing village in northern *** WHO-TEQs(Toxic equivalents)of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans(PCDD/Fs),coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls(Co-PCBs),and polybrominated dibenzo-pdioxins and dibenzofurans(PBDD/Fs)in soils collected in January 2012 ranged from 0.29 to 310 pg/g(median 2.9 pg/g,n=32),and the WHO-TEQs in sediments ranged from 0.96 to 58 pg/g(median 4.4 pg/g,n=8).Dioxin-like activities(CALUX-TEQs[2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalent])in soils collected in January 2012,2013,and 2014 ranged from<30 to 4300 pg/g(median<30 pg/g,n=96),and the activities in sediments ranged from<30 to 4000 pg/g(median 33 pg/g,n=24).Dioxin-like compounds accumulated in samples collected around e-waste-processing areas such as open-burning sites and e-waste-processing workshops,and the compounds may be transported from their sources to surrounding areas over the course of several *** of the CALUX-TEQs,but not WHO-TEQs,values were higher than the maximum acceptable WHO-TEQs promulgated by various authorities,indicating that all dioxin-like compounds should be evaluated in samples collected from e-waste-processing *** findings suggest that open burning and open storage of e-waste should be prohibited and that wastewater treatment should be implemented at each workshop to reduce contamination by dioxin-like compounds from e-waste.

Factors that affect the process of professional identity formation in public health nurses

Objective: The aim of this study was to elucidate the process of professional identity formation and the factors that affect the process in public health nurses (PHNs). Methods: We performed an inductive qualitative analysis based on semi-structured interviews and focus group interviews of 65 PHNs. Results: At years 1 - 5, PHNs did not have a professional self-identity. Therefore, it was important for them to recognize the significance of their own work. At years 6 - 10, PHNs acquired self-assurance as a practitioner through feedback from residents. It was important for them to have a better understanding, broader viewpoints and more affection for their own community. At years 11 - 20, PHNs felt ambivalent toward the challenges and heavy responsibilities based on the objective assessment of their jobs and roles. PHNs felt embarrassed by role changes when they became a manager or an expert. It was important for them to become aware of their new role through managerial education and training. However, some PHNs who were unable to establish a clear PHN identity experienced setbacks at each developmental stage. Conclusions: Our data suggest that a differential approach dependent on the stage and level of confidence in an individual’s PHN identity is required for the formation of PHN identity.

Surgical Treatment of Lung Cancer in Patients with Psychiatric Disorders: A Retrospective Study

Background: The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the clinical outcomes of patients with concomitant lung cancer and psychiatric disorders who underwent pulmonary resection at our institution and develop a strategy for treating such patients in the future. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 23 patients with psychiatric disorders who underwent pulmonary resection for lung cancer at our institution between January 1984 and December 2011. Results: The study population comprised 13 men and 10 women with an average age of 67.4 years. The histological types of lung cancer included adenocarcinoma in 14 patients, squamous cell carcinoma in 4, and other types in 5. Fifteen patients were classified as having pathological TNM stage I cancer, four as having stage II, three as having stage III, and one as having stage IV. The coexisting psychiatric disorders were neurosis in eight patients, depression in seven, schizophrenia in five, dementia in two, and oligophrenia in one. Three patients were admitted without a full understanding of the operation. There were no major complications with the exception of delirium, which was seen in eight patients. None of these patients’ coexisting psychiatric disorders worsened. No perioperative death occurred. Conclusions: At our institution, we cooperate closely with psychiatrists to care for surgical patients with psychiatric disorders. There is a possibility that such cooperation will reduce the frequency of previously reported complications.

Suppression of Sup35 amyloid fibril formation by group II chaperonin from <i>Thermoplasma acidophilum</i>

The Group II chaperonin from Thermoplasma acidophilum was added to the in vitro amyloid fibrillation reaction of yeast Sup35NM protein to assess its effects. By measuring the formation of Sup35NM fibrils in real time using the fluorescent dye Thioflavin T, we found that the addition of T. acidophilum-cpn α16, α1, and β1 proteins suppressed fibril formation. Addition of a 0.1 molar-equivalent T. acidophilum-cpn α16 relative to Sup35NM prolonged the initial lag-time of fibril formation and decreased the rate of fibril extension. Addition of 1 or 3 molar-equivalents of T. acidophilum-cpn monomers also produced a similar effect. Delayed addition of these chaperonins after the initial lag phase did not suppress fibril formation. Interestingly, these effects were also observed upon adding only the apical domain segments of α and β-subunits, and we also found that deletion of the helical protrusion in the apical domain of these segments led to an abolishment of the suppression effects. A synthetic peptide whose sequence corresponded to the helical protrusion also displayed a suppression effect, which indicated that archaeal group II chaperonin binds to Sup35NM through the helical protrusion of the apical domain. These findings suggest that group II chaperonin might be actively involved in suppressing amyloid fibril formation, in addition to acting as a protein folding assistant.

Biomechanical Stability of Open-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy: Comparison of Two Locking Plates

Introduction: Recently, new plates with locking screws have been developed and used for medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO). The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare biomechanical properties of different internal fixations in open-wedge HTO using the two currently available locking plates. Methods: Eight paired fresh-frozen cadaveric lower extremities were vertically embedded in steel boxes. The axial compression load was applied to the legs using the mechanical testing machine. The axial compression load test from 0 N to 550 N and the failure test were performed before and after HTO. One side of the leg of a specimen was fixed with the Puddu locking plate and the other side was fixed with the TomoFix plate to compare the two plates using the same specimen. A mode of failure and vertical displacement of the medial and lateral parts of the tibia at the osteotomy gap was recorded using a video camera in the failure test. The load–displacement data were analyzed to calculate stiffness, failure load, and displacement at failure. Results: The mean failure load was 1471.4 N and 1692.3 N and total vertical displacement at failure was 3.1 mm and 2.9 mm with the Puddu and TomoFix plates, respectively. During axial compression loading, displacements mainly occurred at the lateral osteotomy gap, while the medial gap was well preserved. No significant differences were observed in the failure load, displacement, or mode of failure between the two plates. Conclusions: The Puddu and TomoFix plates had similar biomechanical properties in open-wedge HTO. The results indicated reliable stability after open-wedge HTO without fibular osteotomy.

Radiofrequency Ablation-Associated Delayed Diaphragmatic Hernia Treated with the Thoracolaparotomy Approach: A Case Report

Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an effective treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, rare but serious complications may occur after RFA. We describe a case of diaphragmatic hernia associated with RFA. Case Presentation: A 68-year-old man with a history of hepatitis C-related liver cirrhosis was admitted to our hospital because of lower abdominal pain. Three years earlier, he underwent RFA for HCC in segment 8. Computed tomography revealed that the intestine was intruding into the right thoracic cavity through a diaphragmatic hernia. On the basis of the diagnosis of right diaphragmatic hernia with a strangulated ileus, an emergency operation was performed. Perforation of the strangulated transverse colon into the right thoracic cavity was suspected, and a combined approach of laparotomy and thoracotomy was utilized. The operative findings showed that the diaphragmatic hernia was 3.5 × 2.0 cm in diameter, and it was simply sutured with a nonabsorbable suture material. Resection of the intruded ischemic transverse colon was completed, and a covering ileostomy was performed. The patient was discharged without any complications. Conclusions: RFA is widely used for the treatment of HCC. Reports of early- and late-phase complications indicate that heat damage contributes to the fragility of neighboring organs. The occurrence of diaphragmatic hernia after RFA is one of the delayed complications. Although it rarely occurs, this complication requires emergency surgery. In conclusion, if perforation of the intestine into the thoracic cavity is suspected, thoracolaparotomy should be considered as a treatment option to prevent postoperative massive empyema.

This study investigated the contamination status of 21 emerging flame retardants(FRs)in soils(n=32)and river sediments(n=8)from an e-waste recycling(EWR)site in the northern part of *** analyzed FRs,higher levels of decabromodiphenyl ethane(DBDPE)(NDe4200 ng/g dw),1,2-bis-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane(BTBPE)(NDe350 ng/g dw)and Dechlorane Plus isomers(DPs)(NDe65 ng/g dw)were found in soils near EWR workshops and open burning *** highest concentrations of DBDPE(20 ng/g dw),BTBPE(5.7 ng/g dw)and DPs(6.7 ng/g dw)were also detected in sediments collected from the middle of the EWR *** levels decreased concomitantly with increasing distance from the EWR *** results indicate that these FRs were released to the surrounding environment from improper recycling activities,such as manual dismantling of devices and open burning of ***,the estimated daily intakes of those FRs via soil ingestion were approximately ten times higher for children than *** our knowledge,this is a first comprehensive study on characterization of soil and sediment contamination by a series of emerging FRs at an EWR site in Vietnam.
