Niche Differentiation of Phenol-Degrading Microorganisms in UASB Granular Sludge as Revealed by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization

BACKGROUND Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(G-CSF)is a cytokine produced in inflammatory environments that induces differentiation and proliferation of neutrophils in bone *** report a rare case of aggressive G-CSFproducing squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue exhibiting fluorine-18 deoxyglucose(FDG)accumulation in primary lesion,metastatic lymph nodes,spleen,and bone marrow on positron emission tomography–computed tomography(PET/CT).CASE SUMMARY We report a 58-year-old female with a rapid enlarged lingual mass with partial *** test results from the initial examination revealed a leukocyte count of 21380/μ*** PET/CT,extensive FDG accumulation was observed in the tongue and bilateral cervical lymph nodes,with elevated FDG accumulation in the spleen and bone marrow although no distant metastases were *** performed partial glossectomy and bilateral neck *** staining with G-CSF antibodies on biopsy specimen and resected samples revealed that both specimens were G-CSF *** is a rare case of G-CSF producing tongue carcinoma with elevated FDG accumulation in the spleen and bone *** In patients with the tongue cancer and hyperleukocytosis,where FDG accumulations in the spleen and bone marrow are observed using PET/CT and when these accumulations are not caused by metastasis,G-CSF-producing tumors,with associated poor prognosis,should be considered.

Globalization or Isolation？—— Ricardo＇s Model

Through the attempt to clarify justifiable economic circumstances where a policy of globalization and/or a policy of national isolation is proven valid, the author revealed in this thesis that there are two such economic phases： An economy where the theory of comparative advantage, proposed by David Ricardo, is applicable, and an economy where the theory is not applicable. The author applied his original approach to prove the validity of Ricardo＇s comparative advantage theory, and found that the theory can be justified only when a macro economy is in the primal problem phase, where a policy of globalization is effective. It is a necessary and sufficient condition for the theory to be valid. In other words, Ricardo＇s theory of comparative advantage is not applicable when a macro economy is in the dual problem phase, where a policy of national isolation, instead of that of globalization, is valid. The primal problem phase and the dual problem phase of a macro economy, called in this thesis by the author, are a version of an expression quite common in OR （operations research）.

BACKGROUND The clinical significance of intratumoral human epidermal growth factor receptor 2(HER2)heterogeneity is unclear for HER2-positive gastric cancer,although it has been reported to be a significant prognosticator for HER2-positive breast cancer,which has received trastuzumab-based *** To clarify the clinical significance of intratumoral HER2 heterogeneity for HER2-positive gastric cancer,which has received trastuzumab-based *** Patients with HER2-positive unresectable or metastatic gastric cancer who received trastuzumab-based chemotherapy as a first line treatment were *** patients were classified into two groups according to their intratumoral HER2 heterogeneity status examined by immunohistochemistry(IHC)on endoscopic biopsy specimens before treatment,and their clinical response to chemotherapy and survival were *** A total of 88 patients were included in this study,and HER2 heterogeneity was observed in 23(26%)patients(Hetero group).The overall response rate was significantly better in patients without HER2 heterogeneity(Homo group)(Homo vs Hetero:79.5%vs 35.7%,P=0.002).Progression-free survival of trastuzumab-based chemotherapy was significantly better in the Homo group(median,7.9 vs 2.5 mo,HR:1.905,95%CI:1.109-3.268).Overall survival was also significantly better in the Homo group(median survival time,25.7 vs 12.5 mo,HR:2.430,95%CI:1.389-4.273).Multivariate analysis revealed IHC HER2 heterogeneity as one of the independent poor prognostic factors(HR:3.115,95%CI:1.610-6.024).CONCLUSION IHC of HER2 heterogeneity is the pivotal predictor for trastuzumab-based ***,HER2 heterogeneity should be considered during the assessment of HER2 expression.

Verifying Ricardo＇s Model--Whether TPP is Right or Wrong？

Endoscopic removal of a tablespoon lodged within the duodenum

Here we report the case of a 34-year-old man who underwent endoscopic removal of a tablespoon from the stomach that was lodged within the *** required the use of a two-channel upper endoscope and polypectomy *** the doublesnare technique, the spoon was grasped at the proximal and distal parts of the *** doublesnare was first pulled unsuccessfully and then pulled with simultaneous manual abdominal compression of the bulbus from the body *** was gently applied towards the *** a result, the head of the spoon prolapsed from the bulbus, and was easily retracted from the stomach without any *** cases of foreign body lodging within the duodenum, the manual abdominal compression technique may help clinicians pull out the object and avoid *** usefulness of manual compression is dependent on the foreign body's sharpness and the location.

Small hepatocellular carcinoma with ring calcification:A case report and literature review

Ring calcification in untreated hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is extremely rare,with only 3 previously reported cases in the English-language literature.A case of HCC with ring calcification was reported in this ***,3 previously reported cases of HCC with ring calcification were *** 3 of these 4 cases(including our case),surgery was *** the size of the ring-calcified lesion ranged from 3.0-3.7 cm in previously reported cases,the size was only 1 cm in *** differentiation of the tumor was moderate in the 2 previously reported cases in the histological findings and poor in *** spite of their poor differentiation for their sizes,these tumors showed no early enhancement in dynamic computed *** calcified tumors showed a thick fibrous capsule and extensive necrosis *** calcification was considered to result from a circulatory disturbance caused by the imbalance between the less abundant arterial blood flow and high inner pressure induced by either the thick fibrous capsule or vigorous proliferation due to the poor *** calcification in untreated HCC may suggest a lower differentiation of the *** if its size is small,hepatic resection should be performed for any tumor with ring calcification because poor differentiation is considered to be one of the risk factors for recurrence after local ablation therapy,including radio frequency ablation.

Modeling three-dimensional forest structures to drive canopy radiative transfer simulations of bidirectional reflectance factor

Three-dimensional(3-D)Monte Carlo-based radiative transfer(MCRT)models are usually used for benchmarking in intercomparisons of the canopy radiative transfer(RT)***,the 3-D MCRT models are rarely applied to develop remote sensing algorithms to estimate essential climate variables of forests,due mainly to the difficulties in obtaining realistic stand structures for different forest biomes over regional to global ***,some of important tree structure parameters such as canopy height and tree density distribution have been available *** enables to run the intermediate complexities of the 3-D MCRT *** consequently developed a statistical approach to generate forest structures with intermediate complexities depending on the inputs of canopy height and tree *** aims at facilitating applications of the 3-D MCRT models to develop remote sensing retrieval *** proposed approach was evaluated using field measurements of two boreal forest stands at Estonia and USA,*** demonstrated that the simulations of bidirectional reflectance factor(BRF)based on the measured forest structures agreed well with the BRF based on the generated structures from the proposed approach with the root mean square error(RMSE)and relative RMSE(rRMSE)ranging from 0.002 to 0.006 and from 0.7%to 19.8%,*** of the computed BRF with corresponding MODIS reflectance data yielded RMSE and rRMSE lower than 0.03 and 20%,*** the results from the current study are limited in two boreal forest stands,our approach has the potential to generate stand structures for different forest biomes.

Inhibitory effect of fluvastatin on ileal ulcer formation in rats induced by nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug

AIM: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)cause gastrointestinal damage as one of their side effects in humans and experimental animals. Lipid peroxidation plays an important role in NSAID-induced ulceration. The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA)reductase inhibitors on the ulceration in small intestines of ***: The effects of three HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, fluvastatin, pravastatin and atorvastatin on ileal ulcer formation in 5-bromo-2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-(4-methylsulfonylphenyl) thiophene (BFMeT)-treated rats were examined. Antioxidative activity of the inhibitors was measured by a redox-linked colorimetric ***: Fluvastatin, which was reported to have antioxidative activity, repressed the ileal ulcer formation in rats treated with BFMeT an NSAIDs. However, the other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (pravastatin and atorvastatin)did not repress the ileal ulcer formation. Among these HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, fluvastatin showed a significantly stronger reducing power than the others(pravastatin, atorvastatin).CONCLUSION: Fluvastatin having the antioxidaitive activity suppresses ulcer formation in rats induced by NSAIDs.
