In vitro evaluation of the anti-diabetic potential of soymilk yogurt and identification of inhibitory compounds on the formation of advanced glycation end-products

In this study, we aimed to identify starter strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to produce soymilk yogurt that can decrease the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) and its complications. The inhibition assays of the dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP- IV) and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation were conducted using 70% ethanol (EtOH) extraction of freeze-dried soymilk yogurt. Soymilk yogurt produced using Weissella confusa TOKAI 2 showed the highest inhibition rate in the α-amylase inhibition assay, while soymilk yogurt produced using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum TOKAI 17 showed the highest inhibition rates in the α-glucosidase and DPP-Ⅳ inhibition assays, respectively. Soymilk yogurt produced using Streptococcus macedonicus TOKAI 4 showed the highest inhibitory activities in Nω-(carboxymethyl) arginine (CMA) and Nε-(carboxymethyl) lysine (CML) formation, respectively. Furthermore, soymilk yogurt prepared using Lb. plantarum TOKAI 17 and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus TOKAI 35 exhibited higher proportions of aglycone isoflavones than soymilk and showed a higher fluorescent AGEs inhibitory activity than that of soymilk (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the inhibition assay assessing fluorescent AGEs formation using isoflavones indicated that aglycone-type isoflavones, such as genistein and daidzein, had higher inhibitory activities than that of glycosides (p < 0.05). These results indicate that soymilk yogurt produced using Lb. plantarum TOKAI 17 and Lb. pentosus TOKAI 35 had inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase, DPP-Ⅳ, and AGEs formation in vitro, and that aglycone isoflavones might inhibit the formation of fluorescent AGEs.

Protective effects of ursodeoxycholic acid on chenodeoxycholic acid-induced liver injury in hamsters

AIM： TO investigate the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid （UDCA） on chenodeoxycholic acid （CDCA）-induced liver injury in hamsters, and to elucidate a correlation between liver injury and bile acid profiles in the liver.METHODS： Liver injury was induced in hamsters by administration of 0.5% （w/w） CDCA in their feed for 7 d. UDCA （50 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg） was administered for the last 3 d of the experiment.RESULTS： At the end of the experiment, serum alanine aminotransferase （ALl） increased more than 10 times and the presence of liver injury was confirmed histologically. Marked increase in bile acids was observed in the liver. The amount of total bile acids increased approximately three-fold and was accompanied by the increase in hydrophobic bile acids, CDCA and lithocholic acid （LCA）. UDCA （50 mg/kg and 150 mg/kg） improved liver histology, with a significant decrease （679.3 ±77.5 U/L vs 333.6 ± 50.4 U/L and 254.3 ±35.5 U/ L, respectively, P 〈 0.01） in serum ALT level. UDCA decreased the concentrations of the hydrophobic bile acids, and as a result, a decrease in the total bile acid level in the liver was achieved.CONCLUSION： The results show that UDCA improves oral CDCA-induced liver damage in hamsters. The protective effects of UDCA appear to result from a decrease in the concentration of hydrophobic bile acids, CDCA and LCA, which accumulate and show the cytotoxicity in the liver.

In many organisms, the genomes of individual species are isolated by a range of reproductive barriers that act before or after fertilization. Successful mating between species results in the presence of different genomes within a cell （hybridization）, which can lead to incompatibility in cellular events due to adverse genetic interactions. In addition to such genetic interactions, recent studies have shown that the epigenetic control of the genome, silencing of transposons, control of non-additive gene expression and genomic imprinting might also contribute to reproductive barriers in plant and animal species. These genetic and epigenetic mechanisms play a significant role in the prevention of gene flow between species. In this review, we focus on aspects of epigenetic control related to hybrid incompatibility during species hybrid- ization, and also consider key mechanism（s） in the interaction between different genomes.

The interactions of CD4^(+)T cells and B cells are fundamental for the generation of protective antibody responses,as well as for the development of harmful autoimmune *** studies of human tissues and blood samples have established a new subset of CD4^(+)B helper T cells named peripheral helper T(Tph)*** T follicular helper(Tfh)cells,which interact with B cells within lymphoid organs,Tph cells provide help to B cells within inflamed *** cells share many B helper-associated functions with Tfh cells and induce B cell differentiation toward antibody-producing *** differentiation mechanism is also partly shared between Tph and Tfh cells in humans,and both Tfh and Tph cells can be found within the same tissues,including cancer ***,Tph cells display features distinct from those of Tfh cells,such as the expression of chemokine receptors associated with Tph cell localization within inflamed tissues and a low Bd-6/Blimp1 *** that of Tfh cells,current evidence shows that the target of Tph cells is limited to memory B *** this review,we first summarize recent findings on human Tph cells and discuss how Tph and Tfh cells play shared and distinct roles in human diseases.

Estimating reflectance and shape of objects from a single cartoon-shaded image

Although many photorealistic relighting methods provide a way to change the illumination of objects in a digital photograph, it is currently difficult to relight digital illustrations having a cartoon shading style. The main difference between photorealistic and cartoon shading styles is that cartoon shading is characterized by soft color quantization and nonlinear color variations that cause noticeable reconstruction errors under a physical reflectance assumption, such as Lambertian reflection. To handle this non-photorealistic shading property, we focus on shading analysis of the most fundamental cartoon shading technique. Based on the color map shading representation, we propose a simple method to determine the input shading as that of a smooth shape with a nonlinear reflectance property. We have conducted simple ground-truth evaluations to compare our results to those obtained by other approaches.
