Few studies have evaluated the effects of activity patterns of the jaw closing muscles assessed by specific parameters on jaw opening in subsequent cycles during the chewing of food. The objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze the effect of the masseter (jaw closer) activity patterns on suprahyoid (jaw opener) activity during subsequent cycles. The assessments were performed while participants naturally chewed six test foods that differed in size dimensions and textural properties. Surface electromyograms of the masseter (on the habitual working side) and suprahyoid muscles were recorded in ten healthy young adults, each of whom randomly received one of the six test foods. The activity patterns were assessed using three parameters specifically developed for their quantification. Changes in suprahyoid activity during each of the subsequent chewing cycles were examined by three amplitudinal (minimum, maximum, and net values of the integrated suprahyoid electromyogram) parameters and one durational (active duration) parameter. The main finding was that two of the three activity pattern parameters had a statistically significant effect only on the three amplitudinal parameters in three of the six test foods. These results suggest that masseter activity patterns partially affect suprahyoid activity during subsequent chewing cycles and that the effect is food dependent. A possible neural mechanism responsible for this effect is presented.

AIM:To assess adalimumab's efficacy with concomitant azathioprine (AZA) for induction and maintenance of clinical remission in Japanese Crohn's disease (CD) patients. METHODS:This retrospective, observational, singlecenter study enrolled 28 consecutive CD patients treated with adalimumab (ADA). Mean age and mean disease duration were 38.1 ± 11.8 years and 11.8 ± 10.1 years, respectively. The baseline mean Crohn's disease activity index (CDAI) and C-reactive protein were 177.8 ± 82.0 and 0.70 ± 0.83 mg/dL, respectively. Twelve of these patients also received a concomitant stable dose of AZA. ADA was subcutaneously administered:160 mg at week 0, 80 mg at week 2, followed by 40 mg every other week. Clinical response and remission rates were assessed via CDAI and C-reactive protein for 24 wk. RESULTS:The mean CDAI at weeks 2, 4, 8, and 24 was 124.4, 120.2, 123.6, and 135.1, respectively. The CDAI was significantly decreased at weeks 2 and 4 with ADA and was significantly suppressed at 24 wk with ADA/AZA. Overall clinical remission rates at weeks 4 and 24 were 66.7% and 63.2%, respectively. Although no statistically significant difference in C-reactive protein was demonstrated, ADA with AZA resulted in a greater statistically significant improvement in CDAI at 24 wk, compared to ADA alone. CONCLUSION:Scheduled ADA with concomitant AZA may be more effective for clinical remission achievement at 24 wk in Japanese Crohn's disease patients.

Evaluation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Generated on the Surface of Copper Using Chemiluminesence

The antibacterial activity of copper is well-known from an ancient civilization, however, its biocidal mechanism has not been necessarily elucidated. Notwithstanding up to now, mainly 4 processes have been proposed. Among them, it is cleared that 4 kinds of reactive oxygen species (ROS): hydroxyl radical ·OH, hydrogen per oxide H2O2, superoxide anion ·O-2 and singlet oxygen 1O2, play an important role for contact-killing of bacteria, viruses and fungi. In this paper, generation of ROS on the surfaces of copper plates heated from room temperature to 673 K for 4.2 × 102 s in air, was investigated using the chemiluminescence. ROS have been evaluated by selecting the most suitable scavengers, such as 2-propanol for ·OH, sodium pyruvate for H2O2, nitro blue tetrazolium for ·O-2, and sodium azide NaN3 for 1O2. At the same time the outermost surface of copper, on which thin film of cuprous oxide Cu2O was first formed and then cupric oxide CuO was laminated on Cu2O, was examined by thin-film XRD and TEM analysis to estimate the amounts and kinds of copper oxides. It was found that the most amounts of ROS were obtained for the 573 K-heated Cu plate and they were composed of ·OH, H2O2, and ·O-2..

Patterns and Trends in Diagnostic Tests Used for Detection of Colorectal Cancer after Screening with the Immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood Test in Japan

According to the guidelines by the Japanese government, optical colonoscopy is the most strongly recommended diagnostic test after screening with the immunochemical fecal occult blood test (iFOBT), followed by double-contrast barium enema (BE) or sigmoidoscopy. Our study was to assess patterns and trends of colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnostic testing within 2 years after iFOBT. We analyzed both iFOBT results and claims data provided by employee health insurance societies in Japan from 2005 to 2010. 25,596 enrollees underwent iFOBT screening. The positive rate was 5.1%. 32.3% of those positive underwent diagnostic tests and 1.0% (12 patients) were confirmed as having cancer. The most common test was optical colonoscopy (77.2% of total tests), followed by BE (16.2%). From 2006 to 2009, the rate of optical colonoscopy for females increased from 55% to 82% and that of BE declined from 36% to 12%, while no significant changes were seen for males. Only one-third of those who tested positive underwent diagnostic test in the 2 years following screening iFOBT. As official guidelines for diagnostic testing of CRC recommend, optical colonoscopy is now the most commonly used diagnostic test after positive iFOBT result for enrollees in employee health insurance societies in Japan.

Background: To provide patients with a superior quality of life (QOL) after their pelvic tumor resection, ensuring the stability of the trunk as well as satisfactory lower extremity function is important. Although microsurgical reconstructions for the pelvic ring and hip are used clinically, the details of postoperative long-term spinal deformity and QOL remain unclear. Methods: The patients were 66- and 43-year-old men and a 43-year-old woman. The mean postoperative follow-up period was 134 months. The surgical procedures performed on these patients were: pelvic ring reconstruction using a double-barreled free vascularized fibular graft (FVFG) in Patient 1;simultaneous pelvic ring reconstruction using FVFG and hip arthrodesis in Patient 2;and latissimus dorsi free flap without pelvic ring reconstruction in Patient 3. As indicators of spinal deformity, we measured the Cobb angle, thoracic kyphosis angle, lumbar lordosis angle, pelvic angle on the sagittal plane, and sagittal plane balance using whole spine radiography. To assess the patients’ QOL, we examined the International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) score, the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RDQ), activities of daily living (ADL) satisfaction using a visual analogue scale (VAS), and the SF-36. Results: Spinal alignment in the frontal plane worsened in order from Patient 1 to 3. Spinal alignment and pelvic tilt in the sagittal plane were at appropriate levels in Patients 1 and 2. The trunk tilt in the sagittal plane was at an appropriate level only in Patient 1. In the QOL assessment, the function of the affected limb worsened in order from Patient 1 to 3. RDQ scores were lower than the national norm in Patients 2 and 3. With respect to ADL satisfaction and the SF-36, Patient 3 had a markedly low VAS, physical functioning, role-physical, and role-emotional scores. In late years the use of UAV which is suitable for the observation activities in a dangerous area is pushed forw ard.R otary wing type UAV which can perform vertical takeoff and landing and hovering is used. We propose a compact U AV called SW U M which is without tail rotor. We adopt " stator wing" as an anti- torque compensation mechanism instead of a tail ***,the attitude control test around yaw axis was performed using the SW UM prototype on a free rotational table. It was confirmed that the attitude of the vehicle around yaw axis by stator wings was controlled well. We studied a control method for translational motion of this vehicle. The horizontal translational motion will be achieved by tilting the body fone of stator *** created the mathematical model of the kinetics of this vehicle,and are performed analysis by the computer simulation.
