AIM: To investigate the mechanisms of liver growth and atrophy after portal vein ligation (PVL) and its effects on tumor growth. METHODS: Mice were subjected to PVL, partial hepatectomy, or sham surgery. The morphological alterations, activation of transcription factors, and expression of cytokines and growth factors involved in liver regeneration were evaluated. In a separate set of experiments, murine colorectal carcinoma cells were injected via the portal vein and the effect of each operation on liver tumor growth was studied. RESULTS: Liver regeneration after PVL and partial hepatectomy were very similar. In ligated lobes, various cytokines, transcription factors and regulatory factors were signifi cantly upregulated compared to nonligated lobes after PVL. Atrophy in ligated lobes was a result of early necrosis followed by later apoptosis. Tumor growth was signifi cantly accelerated in ligated compared to non-ligated ***: Tumor growth was accelerated in ligated liver lobes and appeared to be a result of increased growth factor expression.

AIM: To investigate if transnasal endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (n-ERCP) using an ultrathin forward-viewing scope may overcome the disadvantages of conventional oral ERCP (o-ERCP) related to the large- caliber side-viewing duodenoscope. METHODS: The study involved 50 patients in whom 25 cases each were assigned to the o-ERCP and n-ERCP groups. We compared the requirements of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) prior to ERCP, rates and times required for successful cannulation into the pancreatobiliary ducts, incidence of post-procedure hyperamylasemia, cardiovascular parameters during the procedure, the dose of a sedative drug, and successful rates of endoscopic naso-biliary drainage (ENBD). RESULTS: Screening gastrointestinal observations were easily performed by the forward-viewing scope and thus no prior EGD was required in the n-ERCP group. There was no significant difference in the rates or times for cannulation, or incidence of hyperamylasemia between the groups. However, the cannulation was relatively difficult in n-ERCP when the scope appeared U-shape under fluoroscopy. Increments of blood pressure and the amount of a sedative drug were significantly lower in the n-ERCP group. ENBD was successfully performed succeeding to the n-ERCP in which mouth-to-nose transfer of the drainage tube was not required. CONCLUSION: n-ERCP is likely a well-tolerable methodwith less cardiovascular stress and no need of prior EGD or mouth-to-nose transfer of the ENBD tube. However, a deliberate application is needed since its performance is difficult in some cases and is not feasible for some endoscopic treatments such as stenting.

Thermal efficiency has improved by using high-temperature vapor produced by spraying water vapor along with flame from a burner. This study aims to apply high-temperature steam heating mechanism in a high-efficient industrial furnace and household gas range. Past studies in this laboratory show that the heat transfer is promoted due to the appropriate amount of water content in each convection, radiation heat transfer. Then, water vapor-added industrial metal melting furnace has been researched. However, the existing furnace was intended to evaluate only the effect of water vapor except measuring surrounding environment, for example temperature and humidity. In this study, the effect of surrounding environment to the furnace is examined, and possibility of heat transfer enhancement is estimated. As a result, surrounding experimental condition has little effect on the change of heating ability, while this experimental furnace shows gradual degradation of heating ability in every experimental trial. Then optimum amount of water supply to the apparatus was discussed. Too much water injection leads to more consumption of heat as latent heat of water in phase change, and exceeds the effect of water vapor in heat transfer. There is a possibility of suitable total water supply, despite that there is no significant change in gas usage in water injection case compared with no water injection.

To date, various signal transducers, cytokines, growth factors, and hormones have been reported to play an important role in homeostasis of various organs. Various cells and organs are involved in the hepatic regeneration process, which proceeds as a result of the coordination of many factors. While these factors are well known to be involved in the liver regeneration after the liver injury, however, as the details of such mechanisms have not been sufficiently elucidated, the practical applicability of hepatic regeneration based on the action of these and cytokines growth factors is still unclear. In terms of the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in hepatic regeneration, cell proliferation resulting from direct signal transduction to the liver has also been reported and recent studies focusing on the inter-organ communication via neural network opened a novel aspect of this field for therapeutic applicability. Therefore, the appropriate understanding of the relationship between autonomic neural network and liver regeneration through various organs including brain, afferent nerve, efferent nerve, etc. is essential. This mini-review explains the principle of neural system involved in the inter-organ communication and its contribution on the liver regeneration upon the liver injury reviewing recent progress in this field.

AIM To evaluate the short-and long-term results of endoscopic ultrasound-guided transmural drainage(EUS-GTD) for pancreatic fluid collection(PFC) and identify the predictive factors of treatment outcome for walled-off necrosis(WON) managed by EUS-GTD *** We investigated 103 consecutive patients with PFC who underwent EUS-GTD between September 1999 and August 2015. Patients were divided into four groups as follows: WON(n = 40), pancreatic pseudocyst(PPC; n = 11), chronic pseudocyst(n = 33), and others(n = 19). We evaluated the short-and long-term outcomes of the treatment. In cases of WON, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the predictor variables associated with the treatment success. In addition, PFC recurrence was examined in patients followed up for more than 6 mo and internal stent removal after successful EUS-GTD was *** In this study, the total technical success rate was 96.1%. The treatment success rate of WON, PPC, chronic pseudocyst, and others was 57.5%, 90.9%, 91.0%, and 89.5%, respectively. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography using the multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the treatment success rate of WON was significantly lower in patients with more than 50% pancreatic parenchymal necrosis(OR = 17.0; 95%CI: 1.9-150.7; P = 0.011) and in patients with more than 150 mm of PFC(OR = 27.9; 95%CI: 3.4-227.7; P = 0.002).The recurrence of PFC in the long term was 13.3%(median observation time, 38.8 mo). Mean amylase level in the cavity was significantly higher in the recurrence group than in the no recurrence group(P = 0.02).CONCLUSION The reduction of WON by EUS-GTD alone was associated with the proportion of necrotic tissue and extent of the cavity. The amylase level in the cavity may be a predictive factor for recurrence of PFC.

Multiple carcinoids in the duodenum, pancreas and stomach accompanied with type A gastritis: A case report

We report a case of multiple duodenal, pancreatic, and gastric carcinoids. A 67-year old woman was admitted to our hospital for treatment of a duodenal carcinoid. Laboratory tests revealed that the patient was associated with macrocytic anemia and hypergastrinemia, and type A gastritis was shown by gastrofiberscopy. During surgery, another tumor was incidentally found in the head of the pancreas. The tumors in the duodenum and pancreas were completely excised by pancreatoduodenectomy and immunohistologically diagnosed as gastrin-and serotonin-producing carcinoids, respectively. Pathological examination revealed that in addition to the grossly found carcinoids, there were subclinical carcinoids, one of which was an endocrine cell micronest, located in the stomach and duodenum. The tumors in the duodenum, pancreas, and stomach showed different characteristics from one another morphologically and immunochemically. Although no definitive evidence has been obtained, some sort of genetic anomaly may have been involved in this case, and hypergastrinemia due to duodenal gastrinoma may induce multiple gastric carcinoids.

Mn（Ⅱ）, Co（Ⅱ）, Ni（Ⅱ）, Cu（Ⅱ）, Pd（Ⅱ） and Ru（Ⅲ） complexes of Schiff bases derived from the condensation of sulfaguanidine with 2,4-dihydroxy benzaldehyde （HL1）, 2-hydroxy-l-naphthaldehyde （HL2） and salicylaldehyde （HL3） have been synthesized. The structures of the prepared metal complexes were proposed based on elemental analysis, molar conductance, thermal analysis （TGA, DSC and DTG）, magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic techniques （IR, UV-Vis, and ESR）. In all complexes, the ligand bonds to the metal ion through the azomethine nitrogen and a-hydroxy oxygen atoms. The structures of Pd（Ⅱ） complex 8 and Ru（Ⅲ） complex 9 were found to be polynuclear. Two kinds of stereochemical geometries; distorted tetrahedral and distorted square py- ramidal, have been realized for the Cu（Ⅱ） complexes based on the results of UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility and ESR spectra whereas octahedral geometry was predicted for Co（Ⅱ）, Mn（Ⅱ） and Ru（Ⅲ） complexes. Ni（Ⅱ） com- plexes were predicted to be square planar and tetrahedral and Pd（Ⅱ） complexes were found to be square planar. The antimicrobial activity of the ligands and their metal complexes was also investigated against the gram-positive bac- teria Staphylococcus aures and Bacillus subtilis and gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli and Pesudomonas aeruginosa, by using the agar dilution method. Chloramphenicol was used as standard compound. The obtained data revealed that the metal complexes are more or less, active than the parent ligand and standard. The X-ray crys- tal structure of HL3 has been also reported.

The spinal cord is composed of gray matter and white *** is well known that the properties of these two tissues differ *** diseases often present with symptoms that are caused by spinal cord *** the mechanical properties of gray and white matter would allow us to gain a deep understanding of the injuries caused to the spinal cord and provide information on the pathological changes to these distinct tissues in several *** studies have reported on the physical properties of gray and white matter,however,these were focused on longitudinal tension *** is known about the differences between gray and white matter in terms of their response to *** therefore performed mechanical compression test of the gray and white matter of spinal cords harvested from cows and analyzed the differences between them in response to *** conducted compression testing of gray matter and white matter to detect possible differences in the collapse *** found that increased compression(especially more than 50%compression)resulted in more severe injuries to both the gray and white *** present results on the mechanical differences between gray and white matter in response to compression will be useful when interpreting findings from medical imaging in patients with spinal conditions.
