A 91-year-old female presented with a pulsatile abdominal mass. Her past medical history included hypertension and hyperlipidemia. A 6.9 cm infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm, with a left ectopic pelvic kidney and two aberrant renal arteries, one each from the left and right common iliac arteries was found on computed tomography. Because of the high risk of rupture, surgery was recommended and an endovascular aneurysm repair was performed. The antegrade flow of the aberrant renal artery from the left common iliac artery was preserved. The right aberrant renal artery was covered with stent graft. The patient’s serum creatinine level remained unchanged throughout the postoperative course, with an uneventful postoperative recovery.

Positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is a diagnostic tool to evaluate metabolic activity by measuring accumulation of FDG, an analogue of glucose, and has been widely used for detecting small tumors, monitoring treatment response and predicting patients’ prognosis in a variety of cancers. However, the molecular mechanism of FDG accumulation into tumors remains to be investigated. It is well-known that most cancers are metabolically active with elevated glucose metabolism, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect. The underlying mechanisms for elevated glucose metabolism in cancer tissues are complex. Recent reports have indicated the potential of FDG-PET/CT scans in predicting mutational status (e.g., KRAS gene mutation) of colorectal cancer (CRC), which suggests that FDG-PET/CT scans may play a key role in determining therapeutic strategies by non-invasively predicting treatment response to anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) therapy. In this review, we summarize the current findings investigating the molecular mechanism of 18F-FDG accumulation in CRC.

A 42-year-old Japanese man with liver cirrhosis by hepatitis C virus (HCV) had successful interferon therapy in May 1991. Since then, serum HCV-RNA and liver function tests had been negative. He had continued to drink more than 100 g/d of alcohol as before. In June 2003, a 5-cm tumor was found in the posterior segment of the liver. The tumor was curatively resected and the surgical specimen showed a well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Non-cancerous lesions of the liver revealed fibrosis at stage F3 with minimal to mild inflammation of grade A1. Heavy drinking may retard the dissolution of fibrosis and accelerate HCC development in patients with sustained virological response.

Dear Editor,Beige adipocytes,which increase energy expenditure by dissipating energy as heat,have gained attention as a therapeutic target for combating obesity.1 Adipocytes express many types of G-protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs),each of which has a unique preference for the Gs,Gi,Gq,and G12 *** the function of Gs-coupledβ-adrenergic receptors in beige adipocyte induction is well established,2 little is known about the function of G12-coupled GPCRs beyond its suppressive roles in white adipocyte maturation.3 In this study,we generated transgenic mice conditionally expressing a G12-coupled designer GPCR using a Cre-loxP system and investigated the potential effects of G12 signaling on adipocyte biology.

随着全球化的加速以及对外开放的进一步深入,高等教育国际化已经成为一种必然趋势。中国普通高校聘请的外籍教师人数也不断增加,可以说已经成为高校教学师资的重要组成部分之一。其中语言类外籍教师不仅数量庞大,分布广泛,而且在很多方面具有较大的独特性,然而外籍教师的专业发展并没有得到很大的重视。笔者采用半结构性访谈法,针对15位语言类日籍外教进行了深入访谈,从而对语言类外籍教师的专业发展现状以及其影响因素进行了探索。研究发现中国高校的语言类外籍教师的专业发展状况并不是很理想。虽然总体工作满意度较高,但还是存在教学能力参差不齐、职业规划不明确等问题。由于外教的工作积极性偏高,学习意识自我学习意识较强,这能够在很大程度上弥补这些不足。因此,笔者认为影响外教专业发展的因素主要为外部因素。通过对访谈资料的整理发现,影响外教专业发展的外部因素为社会文化因素、制度因素和学校因素。

A 72-year-old male underwent neck dissection and parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation. Endotracheal intubation was facilitated with succinylcholine. Prolonged muscle paralysis which was first detected after failure to stimulate the facial nerve with electrocautery, lasted five hours. Laboratory tests indicated pseudocholinesterase (PChE) deficiency. A thyroidectomy one month later was performed uneventfully using rocuronium as a muscle relaxant. Literature review revealed a total of 40 PChE deficiency cases being reported since 1956.

Non-Destructive Imaging of Water Permeation through Cementitious Materials Using MRI

In this study, water permeation through cementitious materials was observed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The influence of cement type on the magnetic resonance signal was studied subsequent to determining the parameters required for imaging. Consequently, adequate imaging of water permeating through hardened cement paste (HCP) made with white Portland cement was achieved, while water permeation through ordinary Portland cement-based HCP yielded poor signal. HCPs maintained at various levels of relative humidity (RH) were observed, and the signal was detected only from those maintained at an RH of higher than 85%. The water permeation depths in HCP were observed by using MRI, and the measured depths were compared to those measured via a spraying water detector on the split surface of the specimens. As a result, good agreement was confirmed between the two methods. Additionally, MRI was applied to concrete specimens;although it was found that water was not detected when a lightweight aggregate was used, water permeation through concrete with limestone aggregate was detectable via MRI. MRI will help in understanding how water permeation causes and accelerates concrete deteriorations such as rebar corrosion and freezing and thawing.

Promoting bone healing after a fracture has been a frequent subject of ***,sclerostin antibody(Scl-Ab)has been introduced as a new anabolic agent for the treatment of ***-Ab activates the canonical Wnt(cWnt)-β-catenin pathway,leading to an increase in bone formation and decrease in bone *** of its rich osteogenic effects,preclinically,Scl-Ab has shown positive effects on bone healing in rodent models;researchers have reported an increase in bone mass,mechanical strength,histological bone formation,total mineralized callus volume,bone mineral density,neovascularization,proliferating cell nuclear antigen score,and bone morphogenic protein expression at the fracture site after Scl-Ab *** addition,in a rat critical-size femoral-defect model,the Scl-Ab-treated group demonstrated a higher bone healing *** the other hand,two clinical reports have researched Scl-Ab in bone healing and failed to show positive effects in the femur and *** review discusses why Scl-Ab appears to be effective in animal models of fracture healing and not in clinical cases.

BACKGROUND:Stent migration in the hepatopancreatic duct might arise as one of the rare complications associated with biliary or pancreatic *** there are some procedures to retrieve the migrated stent,including surgical,percutaneous,and endoscopic approaches,endoscopy should be attempted first because it is least *** study set out to evaluate the usefulness of endoscopic retrieval of migrated biliary and pancreatic ***:Plastic stents that migrated in the bile duct(35 patients)or pancreatic duct(2)were retrieved with endoscopic retrograde *** used were snare forceps,a basket catheter,grasping forceps,biopsy forceps,a balloon catheter,and the Soehendra stent ***:Endoscopic retrieval of migrated stents was performed successfully in 36(97.0%)of the 37 *** devices utilized for successful treatment were basket catheter(13 patients),grasping forceps(10),snare forceps(8),balloon catheter(3),biopsy forceps(1),and the Soehendra stent retriever(1).The unsuccessfully treated patient with chronic pancreatitis underwent surgery since the guide wire did not move forward due to bile duct stenosis,and there was also duodenal *** patient developed mild pancreatitis after withdrawal of the stent;the pancreatitis was relieved with conservative ***:Endoscopic retrieval of migrated biliary and pancreatic stents appears to be useful because of its safety and low ***,various forceps should be prepared for the retrieval of a migrated stent.

To investigate interleukin (IL)-26 expression in the inflamed mucosa of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the function of IL-26. METHODSHuman colonic subepithelial myofibroblasts (SEMFs) were isolated from colon tissue surgically resected. The expression of IL-26 protein and its receptor complex was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The gene expression induced by IL-26 was evaluated by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Intracellular signaling pathways were evaluated by immunoblotting and specific small interfering (si) RNA transfection. RESULTSThe mRNA and protein expression of IL-26 were significantly enhanced in the inflamed mucosa of patients with IBD. IL-26 receptor complex was expressed in colonic SEMFs in vivo and in vitro. IL-26 stimulated the mRNA expression of IL-6 and IL-8 in colonic SEMFs. The inhibitors of mitogen-activated protein kinases and phosphoinositide 3-kinase, and siRNAs for signal transducers and activator of transcription 1/3, nuclear factor-kappa B and activator protein-1 significantly reduced the mRNA expression of IL-6 and IL-8 induced by IL-26. CONCLUSIONThese results suggest that IL-26 plays a role in the pathophysiology of IBD through induction of inflammatory mediators.
