Relationship between Radiological Lung Findings and Laboratory Ferritin and D-Dimer Levels in Patients with COVID-19 Infection

Introduction: Pulmonary symptoms of COVID-19 infection range from asymptomatic infection to severe pneumonia. Pathogenesis and severity of symptoms were found to be related to the body’s immune response. Objectives: Ferritin and D-Dimer in COVID-19 confirmed cases can predict lung injury and possible poor patient prognosis. Materials and Methods: Patients who had been admitted to Dr. Sulaiman alhabib-Arryan Hospital with positive COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests between March 2020 and December 2021 were studied for blood ferritin and D-Dimer levels in relation to pulmonary radiological findings. Results: A total of 494 cases are included in this study. Male patients represent 74.1% of the cases, and the mean age is 51.68 ± 13.37 years. Increased age, ferritin, D-Dimer levels, and respiratory symptoms are factors that showed a statistically significant association with positive computed tomography (CT) findings. Receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) showed that ferritin has a higher capability than D-Dimer to detect CT findings and that both are equal in predicting possible patient mortality. Suggested cutoff values for Ferritin > 336 ng/mL, with 78.21% sensitivity and 86.42% specificity and for D-Dimer > 0.55 mg/L FEU, with sensitivity of 74.82% and specificity of 75.31%. For mortality, the suggested cutoff point for ferritin is >864.6 ng/mL, which gives a sensitivity of 80.26 and a specificity of 64.83%. The suggested cutoff point for D-Dimer is >1.46 mg/L FEU, which gives a sensitivity of 65.79% and a specificity of 78.23%. Conclusion: Laboratory markers such as Ferritin and D-Dimer can be an accurate predictor of lung injury in COVID-19 patients and their increased values can predict the poor patient prognosis and possible mortality if aggressive hospital care is not provided.

Purification of Produced Water from a Sour Oilfield in South Kuwait. 1. Oil-Water Separation and Industrial Salt Production

Produced water from an oil extraction site in South Kuwait was sampled after primary oil – water separation had been carried out. The produced water was filtered through a mixture of activated charcoal and esterified cellulosic material gained from spent coffee grounds as a tertiary adsorption treatment. The earth-alkaline metal ions and heavy metals were separated from the de-oiled produced water by addition of either sodium or potassium hydroxide in the presence of carbon dioxide or by direct addition of solid sodium carbonate. The resulting filtrate gave salt of industrial purity upon selective crystallization on evaporation.

The Role of Colonial Knowledge in Building the Arab Gulf’s Migration Regime

In this paper,I examine how the British Empire in the Arab Gulf created colonial classifications between Gulf Arabs and South *** British racialised the Gulf Arabs in a way which presented them as an eternal,homogeneous,and‘pure’*** racialisation contributed to the exclusion of others within the Gulf,most notably South Asian ***,I discuss some of the gaps within the literature which include the erasure of race and ***,I identify how these gaps can be remedied using a Decolonial *** on these theoretical foundations,I interrogate the racialisations of Gulf Arabs and how these racialisations influenced the migration regime in the ***,I examine how South Asians were racialised in the Gulf.I conclude that the exclusionary migration regime in the Arab Gulf is built on the foundations of the racialised colonial classifications of the British Empire.

Mycetoma at a tertiary care hospital in Saudi Arabia: correlation of histopathological and clinical findings

Objective: To present the histopathological and clinical correlation of mycetoma among patients attending King Abdulaziz University Hospital between ***: The data of all histopathologically diagnosed mycetomas in the period between January 1998 and January 2013 were collected through a computerized database search of the anatomic pathology archives at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. The collected data were analysed. Identification of species were performed for five patients using 16 S ribosomal DNA and internal transcribed spacer ***: There were 19 patients with mycetoma with an average age of 44.26 years and male: female ratio of 4:1. Actinomycetoma were 63.15% and eumycetoma were 36.84%. all patients presented with the classic lesions; presenting as painless subcutaneous mass, sinuses and discharge containing grains. The swellings were of slow evolution, with preferential foot localization. Species specification performed for samples from five patients with active lesions revealed species of Actinomyces israelii and Madurella mycetomatis in respective ***: Actinomycetoma is more common than eumycetoma in this region. The fact that one of the patients with eumycetoma was a Saudi national raises the possibility of an indigenous species similar to Maduraella mycetomatis to be further explored for characteristics and pathogenesis. The disease has to be prioritized again and more robust and quick molecular diagnostic tools should be made available in order to save patients form disfiguring amputations.

Reliability and validity of the Arabic version of the PedsQL<sup>TM</sup>4.0 generic ore scales and PedsQL<sup>TM</sup>3.0 diabetes module

Background: Health related quality of life (HRQOL) has become a field of extensive research involving children and adolescents with diabetes. There are no HRQOL instruments designed or adapted for the Arabic culture and language. The objectives of the study are to test the Arabic translated version of the PedsQLTM 4.0 Generic Core Scales (GCS) and the PedsQLTM 3.0 Diabetes Module (DM) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) in Kuwait and analyse their psychometric properties. Methods: After the process of translation, committee review and pre-testing (linguistic validation), 131 children and adolescents with and 104 without T1DM, with their parents completed the Arabic version of GCS. Those with T1DM completed the Arabic DM. Demographic and diabetes-related data were collected using specially designed questionnaires. Internal consistency was checked by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. The intraclass correlations coefficient, celling and floor effects and construct validity were assessed to determine the psychometric properties of both instruments. Results: Cronbach’s alpha of the child self-report and parent proxy-report was greater than 0.70, for both instruments, indicating internal consistency reliability. Items of both instruments had minimal missing responses, and required a brief time (5 - 7 minutes) to finish indicating their feasibility. No floor effect was demonstrated. Ceiling effect ranged from 5.8% to 15.8%. The GCS distinguished between healthy and diabetic children. Microbial Quality of Irrigation Water of Public Parks in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

In this study, the microbial quality of treated wastewater used for irrigation of three public parks in Dubai was evaluated. A total of 23 samples of TWW (treated wastewater) and 12 samples of irrigated soils from three public parks were collected and tested for Legionella, Salmonella, traditional bacterial indicators, Cryptosporidium oocyst and Giardia cysts using membrane filtration and direct immune-fluorescence assay. The majority of the tested water samples were found contaminated with LLO (Legionella like organisms), Salmonella and traditional bacterial indicators. Both Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts were detected in these samples with a higher occurrence of Cryptosporidium oocysts (96%) than Giardia cysts (35%). The fecal coliform bacteria were detected in 60.8% of water samples and 58% of soil samples. Total coliform bacteria were detected in most of the water and soil samples with a higher occurrence than the fecal coliform bacteria. The results of this study indicate that microorganisms are surviving the chlorination method used for disinfecting wastewater, and are further multiplying in the public parks irrigation network system. Therefore, monitoring the treated wastewater for bacterial pathogens, protozoan parasites and controlling their growth at the point of end use are vital to reducing the risk of environmental contamination with microbial pathogens.
