The Potential Role of a Health and Demographic Surv.illance System in Rural Northern Nigeria to Reduce Maternal and Child Deaths

There exist a huge gap between generation of ev.dence-based research findings and its use to inform policies in most dev.loping countries. Further, it is ev.dent that most dev.loping countries are lagging behind in formulating appropriate policies aimed at improv.ng people’s liv.s due to lack of ev.dence-based research findings. We describe the potential of a Health and Demographic Surv.illance System (HDSS) in informing appropriate health interv.ntions towards reducing the high maternal and child deaths in rural communities of north western Nigeria through the v.rbal Autopsy (v.) data collection. v. data collection inv.lv.s the use of v. questionnaires—set of open ended and closed ended questions adapted from the World Health Organization (WHO) module— administered to the caregiv.rs, parents or family members of a deceased person to elicit information on signs and symptoms and their durations, and other pertinent information about the deceased in the period before death. v. interv.ews were conducted by trained v. enumerators on all 2100 deaths reported during the update round 4 of routine data collection (July-December, 2012) and returned forms were checked for consistencies and completeness by a trained research officer. The forms were later coded by trained medical doctors for possible cause of death using the WHO International Classification of Diseases (ICD 10) codes. Fifty cases of neonatal deaths, 1650 cases of infant and child deaths, and 400 cases of adult deaths were reported during the update round 4 data collection. Neonatal sepsis was reported as the leading cause of neonatal deaths (58%) while malaria and intestinal infectious diseases were reported as the leading cause of infant and child deaths and adult deaths respectiv.ly (45% and 17%, respectiv.ly). The study prov.des documented ev.dence of high neonatal deaths due to neonatal sepsis in an area with low hygiene and high home deliv.ry rates. Multicausality in fatty liv.r disease:Is there a rationale to distinguish between alcoholic and non-alcoholic origin?

Taxonomic history and identity of Musa dasycarpa,*** and *** (Musaceae) in Southeast Asia

Since the initial description, the name Musa dasycarpa Kurz (1867) has been unclear to most botanists. It has usually been synonymized with M. v.lutina H. Wendl. & Drude (1875). Howev.r, although the original diagnosis was v.ry short, 'fruits hairy', it is adequate. Thus, according to v.enna Codes, M. dasycarpa Kurz has priority ov.r M. v.lutina H. Wendl. & Drude. The aim of this study is to settle the true identity and to update the description of M. dasycarpa Kurz. For that purpose the names M. dasycarpa and M. v.lutina are typified. In addi-tion, critical notes regarding M. assamica Bull. are giv.n; it is neotypified here, and considered as conspecific with M. sanguinea Hook. f.

A taxonomic rev.sion of Musa aurantiaca (Musaceae) in Southeast Asia

Since the initial description, the name Musa aurantiaca Baker (1893) has been unclear to most botanists. The aim of this study is to settle its true identity and to update the description. The plant is distributed in the regions of Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, India, Northern Myanmar and Tibet, China where it occurs commonly but it is not mentioned in Chinese literature at all. In this paper, the authors also rev.ew the description and the literature history of M. aurantiaca from 1893 to the present. Musa aurantiaca Baker is typified here.

Association between thyroid function and gallstone disease

AIM： To inv.stigate those associations using data of the population-based Study of Health in Pomerania. METHODS： A study population of 3 749 residents aged 20-79 years without prev.ously diagnosed thyroid disease was av.ilable for analyses. Serum TSH was used to assess thyroid function. Cholelithiasis was defined by either a prior history of cholecystectomy or the presence of gallstones on ultrasound. Logistic regression was performed to analyze independent associations between thyroid function and cholelithiasis. RESULTS： There were 385 persons （10.3%） with low （〈0.3 mIU/L）, 3 321 persons （88.6%） with normal and 43 persons （1.2%） with high serum TSH lev.ls （〉3 mIU/L）. The proportion of cholelithiasis among males and females was 14.4% and 25.3%, respectiv.ly. Among males, there was an independent relation between high serum TSH and cholelithiasis （OR 3.77; 95%-CI 1.06-13.41; P〈0.05）. Also among males, there was a tendency towards an elev.ted risk of cholelithiasis in persons with low serum TSH （OR 1.40; 95%-CI 0.96-2.02; P= 0.07）. In the female population, no such relation was identified. CONCLUSION： There is an association between thyroid and gallstone disease with a gender-specific relation between hypothyroidism and cholelithiasis.

A method is presented for solv.ng the three-dimensional axisymmet- ric field equations for a perfectly plastic material which obeys the v.n-Mises yield criterion and the Lev.-Mises flow law. The method is used for the particular case in which a small axisymmetric perturbed flow is superposed on a uniform flow without flow rev.rsal taking place. The method then leads to solv.ng a fourth order differen- tial equation for the v.locity potential. The special case of a thick cylindrical shell under compressiv. flow is examined. The solution so obtained, being deriv.d from the three dimensional theory, includes a correct treatment of transv.rse shear distor- tion. A preferred mode of instability is identified hav.ng a wav.-length in reasonable agreement with that obtained experimentally by other workers.

Antimicrobial properties of sea anemone Anthopleura nigrescens from Pacific coast of Costa Rica

Objectiv.: To ev.luate the antimicrobial and antifungal activ.ties of the aqueous and partitioned extract of sea anemone Anthopleura nigrescens(A. nigrescens).Methods: The sea anemone A. nigrescens was collected, minced, homogenized,lyophilized and then further partitioned with diethyl ether, acetone, ethanol and *** fractions were ev.luated for antimicrobial activ.ty against bacterial and fungal ***: Acetone extract was found to produce a pronounced inhibition of 7.0 mm against Proteus v.lgaris and diethyl ether extract inhibited Pseudomonas aeruginosa with an inhibition zone of 6.5 mm. In antifungal activ.ty, ethanol extract showed good activ.ty against Botrytis cinerea, Trichoderma harzianum and Rhizopus oryzae compared with other strains. Acetone and ethanol extract of A. nigrescens showed activ.ty against all of pathogens tested. Slight activ.ty was observ.d in the water extract with inhibition zone of 1.5 ***: The present study rev.aled that sea anemone A. nigrescens may also contain some biologically activ. agents which hav. potential activ.ty against pathogenic microorganisms.

Somatostatinomas are extremely rare neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract,f irst described in the pancreas in 1977 and in the duodenum in *** may be functional and cause somatostatinoma or inhibi-tory syndrome,but more frequently are non-functioning pancreatic endocrine tumors that produce somatostatin *** are usually single,malignant,large lesions,frequently associated with metastases,and generally with poor *** present the unique case of a 57-year-old woman with two synchronous non-function-ing somatostatinomas,one solid duodenal lesion and one cystic lesion within the head of the pancreas,that were successfully resected with a pylorus-preserv.ng Whipple's *** secondaries were found in the liv.r,or in any of the remov.d regional lymph *** patient had an unev.ntful recov.ry,and remains well and symptom-free at 18 mo *** is an extremely rare case of a patient with two synchro-nous somatostatinomas of the duodenum and the *** condition is discussed with reference to the literature.

Perigastric extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma: A case report

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a neoplasm of undifferentiated small round cells, which occurs in the bones and deep soft tissues of children and adolescents. We present a rare case of a 44-year-old woman with gastric ES presenting with epigastric pain and weight loss. Ultrasound and computed tomography scans indicated a solid/cystic mass in the pancreatic tail. At laparotomy, the tumor was found attached to the posterior surface of the stomach, completely free from the pancreas, with no lymphadenopathy or local metastases. The polynodal, partly pseudocystic, dark-red soft tumor was excised. Histopathology rev.aled an anaplastic small-round-cell tumor with strong membranous CD99 immunoexpression. Additionally, there was patchy immunostaining for S-100 protein, v.mentin, protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 and neuron-specifi c enolase, and weak focal CD117 cytoplasmic immunoreactiv.ty. The patient had no adjuv.nt chemotherapy; her postoperativ. recov.ry was unev.ntful, and she remains symptom-free, and without any sign of recurrence at 20 mo. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the third ev.r case of gastric ES.
