Design Intervention: An Artistic Strategy (A Strategy) to Minimize Text Fading and Metal Commemorative Plaque Theft in Ghana

The Commemorative Plaque Industry thrives at the hands of the local craftsmen in Ghana. Techniques, methods, tools, and materials used as handed to them by their previous masters have remained the same over the years. As a result, plaques produced had peculiar problems such as text fading, degrading the actual effect of the plaques. Additionally, metals once widely used for making plaques devoid of text fading in the industry seem to have lost their relevance due to metal plaque theft, rust on metal plaques, and the continuous rise in metal prices. This research uses descriptive, experimental, and case studies of the qualitative research method to examine the problems associated with locally produced commemorative plaques. A total of hundred (100) artisans, including metal scrap dealers, and plaque buyers, were selected for the study. Direct observation and face-to-face interviews were conducted with the local craftsmen, art lecturers and students, scrap dealers, and plaque buyers who were purposively sampled for the study. The study revealed that existing materials like ceramic and aluminium could be integrated innovatively to produce commemorative plaques devoid of text fading;a corrosion-resistant text could be made using anodized or coated metals used in smaller quantities to reduce costs while also making them unattractive for theft and lastly, silicone sealant was found to be a viable option for permanently inscribing text on porcelain bases. The results clarify and underline the necessity to grow the local plaque industry in terms of plaque production as another essential basis to assure high-quality plaques with no text fading that will survive for generations to serve their intended purpose.

Exploitation and Excavation of Land for Clay as Raw Material for Potters in Vume in the Volta Region of Ghana

Clay is a precious natural resource that is used in practically every aspect of life. It has a wide range of applications, including utilitarian and aesthetic items as well as electrical and electronic gadgets. Vume is rich in clay types, which may be found in vast concentrations. In Vume, the commonest way of clay winning is the open pit method. Most clay winners usually abandoned the sites after their clay winning activities without any effort to reclaim it. As a result, the study was designed to investigate the causes of such clay over exploitation and its consequences in Vume. The study employed qualitative research method with phenomenological approach to investigate the problem. The convenience sampling as non-probabilty sampling method was adopted to select six (6) clay winners from two (2) sampling sites of clay winning, making a total sampling size of twelve (12) for this research. The justification was that these clay winners were available at the clay sites and also engaging in unsystematic clay winning activities during the visits by the researchers. The main instruments used for data collection were interviews and direct observation of sites. The study showed that if this rapid clay depletion was not addressed, it would have a negative impact on the pottery and ceramic centers in Vume. The study recommended among others that, there could be proper mechanism to organize clay winners into Small Scale Enterprises and become official distributors of clay to potters in Vume and other industries as well as institutions within the catchment area so that government could get tax revenue from the clay winning activities to develop Vume and the country at large.

Assessment of anti mosquito measures in households and resistance status of Culex species in urban areas in southern Ghana:Implications for the sustainability of ITN use

Objective:To determine resistance status of Culex species to different class of insecticides and assess the major anti-mosquito strategies employed by urban households and their possible effects on malaria ***:Structured questionnaires were randomly administered to obtain information on demographic characteristics,measures that people use to prevent mosquito bites and their perception of where mosquitoes breed in their *** susceptibility assays were also carried out using WHO discriminating dosages of four insecticides from different chemical classes against Culex ***:Majority of respondents(54.75%) preferred the use of domestic insecticides in the form of aerosols and *** households that used domestic insecticides,the use of coil was most frequent(62.9%) with a mean(95%CI) of 9.18(8.99,9.37) coils per *** level of pyrethroid-resistance and multiple insecticide resistance in Culex species were also detected in some of the study ***:The excessive use of domestic insecticides and high level of resistance in Culex species observed in the study area has implications for the ITN component of the nation's malaria control program in more subtle *** will lose interest in the use of ITN when it fails to protect users from bites of resistant Culex *** use of domestic insecticides may also select resistance in both malaria vectors and Culex *** this account we recommend that nuisance mosquitoes must be controlled as part of malaria control programs to improve acceptance and utilization of ITN.

When a crowdsourcing approach is used to assist the classification of a set of items,the main objective is to classify this set of items by aggregating the worker-provided labels.A secondary objective is to assess the workers’skill levels in this process.A classical model that achieves both objectives is the famous Dawid-Skene *** this paper,we consider a third objective in this context,namely,to learn a classifier that is capable of labelling future items without further assistance of crowd *** extending the DawidSkene model to include the item features into consideration,we develop a Classification-Oriented Dawid Skene(CODS)model,which achieves the three objectives *** effectiveness of CODS on this three dimensions of the problem space is demonstrated experimentally.

In this paper,new four fifth-order fractional nonlinear equations are derived and *** frac-tional terms are defined in the conformable sense and these equations are then solved using two effective methods,namely,the sub-equation and the generalized Kudryashov *** methods were tested on the proposed models and succeeded in finding new solutions with different values of parameters.A graphical representation of some results is provided and proves the efficiency and applicability of the proposed methods for providing solutions with known physical *** methods are good candi-dates for solving other similar problems in the future.

Electro-oxidation of paracetamol in the presence of malononitrile:Application for green,efficient,none-catalyst,simple and one-pot electro-synthesis of new paracetamols

Electrochemical oxidation of paracetamol has been studied in the presence of malononitrile as a nucleophile in a phosphate buffer solution （0.15 tool/L, pH 7）, using cyclic voltammetric techniques. The results indicated that the N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone-imine derived from paracetamol participates in a 1,4-Michael-ts, pe addition reaction with the malononitrile to form the corresponding paracetamol derivatives （6a, 7a）. The present study has led to the development of a simple, green, non-catalyst and one-pot electrochemical method with high atom economy under mild conditions.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 emphasizes the need for economies around the world to double their efforts in energy efficiency *** is because improvements in energy efficiency can trigger economic growth and considered as one of the‘green’growth strategies due to its carbon free *** this end,some empirical studies have investigated the nexus between economic growth and energy efficiency,but the effects of the latter on financial indicators have not been sufficiently studied in the literature,at least in developing economies like *** study examines the effect of energy efficiency improvements on commercial bank profitability under different political regimes(i.e.,autocratic and democratic political regimes);something previous literature had *** study uses panel data,consisting of 43 African countries and the simultaneous System Generalized Method of *** found that energy efficiency improvement is more likely to induce higher bank profitability in political institutions with the characteristics of centralization of power compared with those with decentralization of ***,for the banking sector,the findings suggest that energy utilization behavior of clients should be included in the loan or credit valuation *** the government,the agenda of energy efficiency should be aggressively pursued while taking cognizance of creating a political environment that weans itself from a‘grandfathering’behavior.

Vegetation structure,dominance patterns and height growth in an Afromontane forest,Southern Africa

Information on forest structure is fundamentally important to track successional vegetation dynamics for efficient forest *** study reports on vegetation characteristics,dominance patterns and species height growth in a northern mistbelt forest type in South *** alpha-diversity indices(species richness and Shannon-Weiner diversity),structural vegetation parameters(tree density and basal area),and species importance value index were *** class distribution and height-diameter allometry were further examined for the overall stand and most important *** densities(472.0±43.5 and 605.3±28.1 trees ha^-1 for C 5 cm to\10 cm and C 10 cm dbh(diameter at breast height)classes,respectively)and basal area values(1.99±0.19 and 48.07±3.46 m^2 ha^-1,respectively)are comparable to other Afromontane forests in East *** overall stand showed an inverted-J shaped distribution pattern which is a typical feature of stand size class distribution in most natural *** ecologically important species also exhibited an inverted-J shaped distribution pattern,suggesting good regeneration and recruitment *** were significant differences in species on height,reflecting species-specific height growth patterns,possibly a result of intrinsic growth potential and competitive *** present study suggests that conservation and management policies,including protection of surrounding land uses against fire,contribute to maintaining a successful recovery of these ***,it should be noted that these forests may be experiencing relatively slow dynamic flux as a result of the overmature state of some trees with several years under relatively strict protection.
