Treatable causes of fever among children under five years in a seasonal malaria transmission area in Burkina faso

Background:fever remains a major public health *** Burkina faso,more than half of febrile children are considered not to be infected by *** study prospectively assessed probable(treatable)causes of fever in Burkinabe ***:A prospective study was conducted among febrile children(≥37.5°C)under 5 years of age presenting at four health facilities and one referral hospital in rural Burkina *** each participant,blood was collected for malaria microscopy and culture,urine for dipstick testing and culturing if tested positive for leucocytes and nitrite,stool for rotavirus/adenovirus testing,culture and parasitology,and a nasopharyngeal swab for ***:In total 684 febrile children were included in the *** falciparum malaria was found in 49.7%(340/684)of the participants and non-malaria infections in 49.1%(336/684)of *** non-nalaria infections included gastro-intestinal infections(37.0%),common bacterial pathogens of nasopharynx(24.3%),bacterial bloodstream infections(6.0%)and urinary tract infections(1.8%).Nearly 45%(154/340)of the malaria infected children were co-infected with non-nalaria infections,but only 3.2%(11/340)of these co-infections could be considered as a possible alternative cause of *** contrast,in the malaria microscopy negative children 18.0%(62/344)of the infections could be the probable cause of the *** were not isolated from 23.7%(162/684)of the febrile ***:Malaria remains the most common pathogen found in febrile children in Burkina ***,a relative high number of febrile children had non-malaria *** correct diagnosis of these non-malaria fevers is a major concern,and there is an urgent need to develop more point-of-care diagnostic tests and capacities to identify and treat the causes of these fevers.

BackgroundIn onchocerciasis-endemic areas with high ongoing Onchocerca volvulus transmission,a high prevalence of epilepsy has been *** study aimed to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of epilepsy in the Bono Region of Ghana following 27 years of implementation of ivermectin mass drug administration(MdA).MethodsBetween October 2020 and August 2021,cross-sectional surveys were conducted in nine communities in the Tain district and Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region of *** the first stage,a random door-to-door approach was used to screen the population for epilepsy using a pre-tested *** suspected of having epilepsy were invited for a second-stage neurological examination for case *** *** microfilarial infection status and Ov16 seropositivity were also ***-five confidence intervals(95%CI)for prevalence values were calculated using the Wilson Score *** the 971 participants,500(51.5%)were females,and the median age(interquartile range)was 26(15‒43)*** participants(1.4%,95%CI:1.0‒2.0)were diagnosed as having epilepsy with generalized seizures being the most frequent seizure type(85.7%,12/14).The overall microfilarial prevalence of *** was 10.3%(November 2020)and 9.9%(August 2021);the Ov16 seroprevalence was 22.2%(June 2021).Only 63.2%took ivermectin in the last round of MdA distribution in March *** 1.4%prevalence of epilepsy in the Bono region is similar to the median epilepsy prevalence in sub-Saharan ***,the persistent microfilarial prevalence and low ivermectin study coverage call for the Ghana Onchocerciasis Elimination Programme to step up its efforts to ensure that the gains achieved are consolidated and improved to achieve the elimination of onchocerciasis by 2030.

Nanoscale displacement of the image of an atomic source of radiation

Light emitted by an atomic source of radiation appears to travel along a straight line （ray） from the location of the source to the observer in the far field. however, when the energy flow pattern of the radiation is resolved with an accuracy better than an optical wavelength, it turns out that the field lines are usually curved. We consider electric dipole radiation, a prime example of which is the radiation emitted by an atom during an electronic transition, and we show that the field lines of energy flow are in general curves. Near the location of the dipole, the field lines exhibit a vortex structure, and in the far field they approach a straight line. The spatial extension of the vortex in the optical near field is of nanoscale dimension. due to the rotation of the field lines near the source, the asymptotic limit of a field line is not exactly in the radially outward direction and as a consequence, the image in the far field is slightly shifted. This sub-wavelength displacement of the image of the source should be amenable to experimental observation with contemporary nanoscale-precision techniques.

New Indicators of the Technological Impact of Scientific Production

Purpose:Building upon pioneering work by francis Narin and others,a new methodological approach to assessing the technological impact of scientific research is ***/methodology/approach:It is based on the analysis of citations made in patent families included in the PATSTAT database that is to scientific papers indexed in ***:An advanced citation matching procedure is applied to the data in order to construct two indicators of technological impact:on the citing(patent)side,the country/region in which protection is sought and a patent family’s propensity to cite scientific papers are taken into account,and on the cited(paper)side,a relative citation rate is defined for patent citations to papers that is similar to the scientific paper-to-paper citation rate in classical *** limitations:The results are limited by the available data,in our case Scopus and PATSTAT,and especially by the lack of standardization of references in *** required a matching procedure that is neither trivial nor *** implications:Results at the country/region,document type,and publication age levels are *** country/region-level results in particular reveal features that have remained hidden in analyses of straight *** notable is that the rankings of some Asian countries/regions move upwards when the proposed normalized indicator of technological impact is applied as against the case with straight counts of patent citations to those countries/regions’published ***/value:In our opinion,the level of sophistication of the indicators proposed in the current paper is unparalleled in the scientific literature,and provides a solid basis for the assessment of the technological impact of scientific research in countries/regions and institutions.

desiccation tolerance （dT）, the ability to survive loss of more than 90% of cellular water （≤0.1 g h2O g^-1 dry mass） for prolonged periods, is common in seeds （90% of angiosperm species） but rare in vegetative tissues （0.04% of land plants; reviewed in Gaff and Oliver, 2013）. Vegetative dT is more widespread in non-tracheophytes, being present in 25 species of algae, 158 bryophytes species, and all lichens, but is rare in tracheophytes, being displayed in 64 pteridophyte and 135 angiosperm species （Gaff and Oliver, 2013）.

Breeding melon(Cucumis melo)with resistance to powdery mildew and downy mildew

Melon(Cucumis melo L.)production is often restricted by a plethora of pests and diseases,including powdery mildew and downy mildew caused respectively by the fungal species Podosphaera xanthii/Golovinomyces orontii and oomycete species Pseudoperonospora *** efforts have been directed on identification of resistant sources by screening(wild)melon *** the current review,we summarized such efforts from various publications of the last 50 plus *** to powdery mildew has been identified in 239 melon accessions and downy mildew resistance in 452 accessions of both *** and the wild relative species *** the resistance sources,*** *** accessions PMR 45,PMR 5,PMR 6,and WMR 29 as well as *** *** accessions PI 124111,PI 124112,and PI 414723 have been considered as the most valuable germplasm because multiple resistance genes have been identified from these accessions and are widely used in melon resistance *** genetic mapping in a number of resistant sources has enabled identification of 25 dominant genes,two recessive genes and seven QTLs conferring powdery mildew resistance,as well as eight dominant genes and 11 QTLs for downy mildew *** on the reported sequences of associated markers,we anchored physically(many of)these genes and QTLs to chromosomes of the melon ***92 *** addition to presenting a comprehensive overview on powdery mildew and downy mildew resistance in(wild)melon germplasm,we suggest strategies aiming at breeding melon with durable and broad-spectrum resistance to pathogens and pests.

This case report describes a 69-year-old man presen-ting with an extensive subcutaneous emphysema in his neck and generalized peritonitis caused by a lower gastrointestinal tract perforation. This case emphasizes that subcutaneous emphysema patients with negative thoracic findings should be scrutinized for signs of retroperitoneal hollow viscus perforation.
