Association of handgrip strength with semen characteristics:a study with repeated measurements among healthy Chinese men

Accumulating epidemiological evidence shows that handgrip strength provides predictive potential in physical,mental,and reproductive health ***,the associations between handgrip strength and semen characteristics have not been *** recruited 1382 eligible men at the Hubei Province Human Sperm Bank(Wuhan,China)who had their handgrip strength measured at recruitment and provided 6458 repeated semen specimens within a 6-month *** characteristics,including semen volume,sperm motility parameters(immotility,nonprogressive motility,and progressive motility),and sperm concentration,were ***-effect models and restricted cubic spline functions were applied to investigate the relationship of handgrip strength with repeated measurements of semen *** adjusting for confounding factors,the mixed-effect models revealed that handgrip strength was positively associated with semen volume,sperm concentration,progressive motility,total motility,and total count(all P for trend<0.05).Compared to men in the lowest quartile,those in the highest quartile of handgrip strength had higher semen volume,sperm concentration,progressive motility,total motility,and total count,with measurements of 14.2%(95%confidence interval[CI]:5.9%-23.2%),19.5%(95%CI:7.3%-33.1%),9.5%(95%CI:3.4%-15.9%),8.8%(95%CI:3.2%-14.6%),and 36.4%(95%CI:18.9%-56.5%),*** positive dose-response relationships were further confirmed in restricted cubic splines,where handgrip strength was modeled as a continuous *** strength,as an indicator of muscular function and strength,was positively associated with semen characteristics in a dose-dependentmanner.

The longitudinal immunologic status of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)-infected patients and its association with the clinical outcome are barely ***,we sought to analyze the temporal profiles of specific antibodies,as well as the associations between the antibodies,proinflammatory cytokines,and survival of patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).A total of 1830 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases were *** temporal profiles of the virus,antibodies,and cytokines of the patients until 12 weeks since illness onset were fitted by the locally weighted scatter plot smoothing *** mediation effect of cytokines on the associations between antibody responses and survival were explored by mediation *** the 1830 patients,1435 were detectable for SARS-CoV-2,while 395 were positive in specific antibodies *** the 1435 patients,2.4%presented seroconversion for neither immunoglobulin G(IgG)nor immunoglobulin M(IgM)during *** seropositive rates of IgG and IgM were 29.6%and 48.1%,respectively,in the first week,and plateaued within five *** the patients discharged from the hospital,the IgM decreased slowly,while high levels of IgG were maintained at around 188 AUmL^(-1) for the 12 weeks since illness *** contrast,in the patients who subsequently died,IgM declined rapidly and IgG dropped to 87 AUmL^(-1) at the twelfth *** interleukin-6,interleukin-8,interleukin-10,interleukin-1b,interleukin-2R,and tumor necrosis factor-a levels were observed in the deceased patients in comparison with the discharged patients,and 12.5%of the association between IgG level and mortality risk was mediated by these *** study deciphers the temporal profiles of SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies within the 12 weeks since illness onset and indicates the protective effect of antibody response on survival,which may help to guide prognosis estimation.

Bioinspired Ultrasensitive Flexible Strain Sensors for Real-Time Wireless Detection of Liquid Leakage

Micro-extrusion compression molding and surface modification were proposed for the mass fabrication of a superhydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane sensor (TCGS).Inspired by scorpions, TCGS features Archimedean spiral crack arrays and micropores, achieving 218.13 sensitivity at 2% strain, a 4300% increase, and over 5000 usage cycles of *** robust superhydrophobicity of TCGS improves sensitivity and stability for detecting small-scale liquid leakage, allowing precise monitoring across various sizes and compositions while providing early warnings in various scenarios. Liquid leakage of pipeline networks not only results in considerable resource wastage but also leads to environmental pollution and ecological imbalance. In response to this global issue, a bioinspired superhydrophobic thermoplastic polyurethane/carbon nanotubes/graphene nanosheets flexible strain sensor (TCGS) has been developed using a combination of micro-extrusion compression molding and surface modification for real-time wireless detection of liquid leakage. The TCGS utilizes the synergistic effects of Archimedean spiral crack arrays and micropores, which are inspired by the remarkable sensory capabilities of scorpions. This design achieves a sensitivity of 218.13 at a strain of 2%, which is an increase of 4300%. Additionally, it demonstrates exceptional durability by withstanding over 5000 usage cycles. The robust superhydrophobicity of the TCGS significantly enhances sensitivity and stability in detecting small-scale liquid leakage, enabling precise monitoring of liquid leakage across a wide range of sizes, velocities, and compositions while issuing prompt alerts. This provides critical early warnings for both industrial pipelines and potential liquid leakage scenarios in everyday life. The development and utilization of bioinspired ultrasensitive flexible strain sensors offer an innovative and effective solution for the early wireless detection of liquid leakage.

Efficient photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate by a molecular noble metal-free system

Inhibiting SHP2 reduces glycolysis, promotes microglial M1 polarization, and alleviates secondary inflammation following spinal cord injury in a mouse model

Reducing the secondary inflammatory response, which is partly mediated by microglia, is a key focus in the treatment of spinal cord injury. Src homology 2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2(SHP2), encoded by PTPN11, is widely expressed in the human body and plays a role in inflammation through various mechanisms. Therefore, SHP2 is considered a potential target for the treatment of inflammation-related diseases. However, its role in secondary inflammation after spinal cord injury remains unclear. In this study, SHP2 was found to be abundantly expressed in microglia at the site of spinal cord injury. Inhibition of SHP2 expression using siRNA and SHP2 inhibitors attenuated the microglial inflammatory response in an in vitro lipopolysaccharide-induced model of inflammation. Notably, after treatment with SHP2 inhibitors, mice with spinal cord injury exhibited significantly improved hind limb locomotor function and reduced residual urine volume in the bladder. Subsequent in vitro experiments showed that, in microglia stimulated with lipopolysaccharide, inhibiting SHP2 expression promoted M2 polarization and inhibited M1 polarization. Finally, a co-culture experiment was conducted to assess the effect of microglia treated with SHP2 inhibitors on neuronal cells. The results demonstrated that inflammatory factors produced by microglia promoted neuronal apoptosis, while inhibiting SHP2 expression mitigated these effects. Collectively, our findings suggest that SHP2 enhances secondary inflammation and neuronal damage subsequent to spinal cord injury by modulating microglial phenotype. Therefore, inhibiting SHP2 alleviates the inflammatory response in mice with spinal cord injury and promotes functional recovery postinjury.

Using chloramine as a coagulant aid in enhancing coagulation of Yellow River water in China

Considering that contaminated raw water mostly contains high Ammonia-N and a majority of water treatment plants use prechlorination process in China, efficiency of chloramines as a coagulant aid in enhancing coagulation was investigated by Jar stirring and pilot-scale tests, using Yellow River water containing high concentration of natural organic matters （NOM） and bromide in winter. The jar tests results showed that, compared with no preoxidation, preformed chloramine apparently decreased the turbidity of settled and filtered water with low dosage （2.0 rag/L）, and the aid-coagulation efficiency was further enhanced with the increase of chlorine （Cl2） to Ammonia-N （N） ratio. Pilot-scale studies indicated that, in comparison to the case without preoxidation, the turbidity removal efficiency of flotation and filtration effluent water was significantly improved, the particle counts of filtered water were decreased 63.4%, the average rate of filter head loss was reduced 18.2%, and filter run time was prolonged 15.7%. Therefore, chloramine preoxidation may substantially enhance the particle separation efficiency.

Supersonic flow onto solid wedges, multidimensional shock waves and free boundary problems Dedicated to Professor LI Ta Tsien on the Occasion of His 80th Birthday

When an upstream steady uniform supersonic flow impinges onto a symmetric straight-sided wedge,governed by the Euler equations,there are two possible steady oblique shock configurations if the wedge angle is less than the detachment angle—the steady weak shock with supersonic or subsonic downstream flow(determined by the wedge angle that is less than or greater than the sonic angle)and the steady strong shock with subsonic downstream flow,both of which satisfy the entropy *** fundamental issue—whether one or both of the steady weak and strong shocks are physically admissible solutions—has been vigorously debated over the past eight *** this paper,we survey some recent developments on the stability analysis of the steady shock solutions in both the steady and dynamic *** the static stability,we first show how the stability problem can be formulated as an initial-boundary value type problem and then reformulate it into a free boundary problem when the perturbation of both the upstream steady supersonic flow and the wedge boundary are suitably regular and small,and we finally present some recent results on the static stability of the steady supersonic and transonic *** the dynamic stability for potential flow,we first show how the stability problem can be formulated as an initial-boundary value problem and then use the self-similarity of the problem to reduce it into a boundary value problem and further reformulate it into a free boundary problem,and we finally survey some recent developments in solving this free boundary problem for the existence of the PrandtlMeyer configurations that tend to the steady weak supersonic or transonic oblique shock solutions as time goes to *** further developments and mathematical challenges in this direction are also discussed.

Rarefied gas effect in hypersonic shear flows

Recently,as aerodynamics was applied to flying vehicles with very high speed and flying at high altitude,the numerical simulation based on the Navier-Stokes(NS)equations was found that cannot correctly predict certain aero-thermo-dynamic properties in a certain range of velocity and altitude while the Knudsen number indicates that the flow is still in the continuum *** first noted by Zhou and Zhang(Science in China,2015),the invalidity of NS equations for such flows might be attributed to an non-equilibrium effect originating from the combined effects of gas rarefaction and strong shear in the boundary-layer *** this paper,we present the scope,physical concept,mathematical model of this shear non-equilibrium effect in hypersonic flows,as well as the way of considering this effect in conventional computational fluid mechanics(CFD)for engineering *** hypersonic flows over sharp bodies and blunt bodies are analyzed by the proposed new continuum model,named direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC)data-improved Navier-Stokes(DiNS)model.
