The ecological performance of metallophyte plants thriving in geochemical islands is explained by the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis

Aims The Inclusive Niche Hypothesis has not been validated for plants using ecophysiological *** few experiments have measured growth and competition but not the physiological response of plants.A metallophyte plant that hyperaccumulates aluminium(Al),Plantago almogravensis,showed a defined spa-tial distribution by occurring mostly on vegetation gaps associ-ated with metalliferous areas(geochemical islands).This case was used to determine,in situ,whether the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis was suitable to explain the extent of the species real-ized *** The vegetation associated with *** geochemical islands in the SW coast of Portugal was *** biotic(neighbouring plants)and abiotic(edaphic)components of the niche were cor-related with parameters of the plant’s ecological and physiological performances(plant density and cover;leaf c and N concentration and isotopic composition;growth).The results were obtained using image analysis,abundance and morphological measures,isotopic signatures and chemical *** Findings The species showed better physiological performance where its ecological performance was lower due to trade-offs with environ-mental *** species’realized niche was mostly limited by shrub competition and soil *** limits contribute to explain the rarity status of the species:the species has a poor capacity to compete but,due to an enhanced Al-tolerance and Al-hyperaccumulator trait,has the ability to find refuge in geochem-ical islands that are too harsh for most other *** work,based on ecophysiological field studies,provides support for the Inclusive Niche Hypothesis relating to plant species.

Folate and vitamin B12 in idiopathic male infertility

Although methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, a folate enzyme gene, has been associated with idiopathic male infertility, few studies have examined other folate-related metabolites and genes. We investigated whether idiopathic male infertility is associated with variants in folate, vitamin B12 （B12） and total homocysteine （tHcy）-related genes and measured these metabolites in blood. We conducted a case-control study that included 153 men with idiopathic infertility and 184 fertile male controls recruited at the Fertility center and Antenatal care center, University Hospital, Malmo and Lund, Sweden. Serum folate, red cell folate （RcF）, serum B12, plasma tHcy and semen quality were measured. Subjects were genotyped for 20 common variants in 12 genes related to folate/B12/ homocysteine metabolism. Metabolite concentrations and genotype distributions were compared between cases and controls using linear and logistic regression with adjustment for covariates. The phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase （PEMT） M 175V and TcblR rs173665 polymorphisms were significantly associated with infertility （P=0.01 and P=0.009, respectively）, but not with semen quality. Among non-users of supplements, infertile men had lower serum folate concentrations than fertile men （12.89 vs. 14.73 nmoll^- 1 P=0.02）, but there were no significant differences in RcF, B 12 or tHcy. Folate, B 12 and tHcy concentrations were not correlated with any semen parameters. This study provides little support for low folate or B12 status in the pathogenesis of idiopathic male infertility. Although additional data are needed to confirm these initial findings, our results suggest that PEMTand TcbIR, genes involved in choline and B12 metabolism, merit further investigation in idiopathic male infertility.

Uterine cervical carcinoma treated with chemoradiotherapy: impact of three-month MRI follow-up on clinical management and outcome

Aim:The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of MRI performed three months after treatment on further follow-up interventions and outcome in patients with uterine cervical carcinoma treated with definitive ***:Sixty consecutive women diagnosed with uterine cervical cancer FIGO 2009 stage IB1-IVA during 2011-2012 treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy/radiotherapy with curative intent at the Department of Gynaecological Oncology at Karolinska University Hospital were retrospectively included.A review of MRI reports and medical records with focus on follow-up interventions associated to imaging was ***:On follow-up MRI three months post treatment,29/60 women had complete remission(mrcR),24/60 women had partial remission(mrPR)and 7/60 had progressive disease(mrPD).In patients with mrcR,no additional procedures were *** group with mrPR had 27 additional MRIs,3 PET/cT examinations and 9 biopsy procedures,none leading to diagnosis of residual *** control rate was 96%after 6.5 months(median).No patient had cervical relapse only;2/53 had cervical relapse in combination with non-regional lymph nodes and distant *** was no statistically significant difference in overall survival between patients with mrcR and mrPR(HR=2.2,P=0.21).conclusion:Patients with residual changes on MRI at three months post treatment have a low risk for locoregional *** this is not recognised,follow-up MRI results in unnecessary additional procedures with low impact on treatment *** studies are needed regarding the most appropriate imaging modality and timing of post-treatment evaluation.

Functional Status Information(FSI)describes physical and mental wellness at the whole-person *** includes information on activity performance,social role participation,and environmental and personal factors that affect the well-being and quality of *** and analyzing this information is critical to address the needs for caring for an aging global population,and to provide effective care for individuals with chronic conditions,multi-morbidity,and *** knowledge graphs(PKGs)represent a suitable way for meaning in a complete and structured way all information related to people's FSI and reasoning over them to build tailored coaching solutions supporting them in daily life for conducting a healthy *** this paper,we present the development process related to the creation of a PKG by starting from the HeLis ontology in order to enable the design of an Al-enabled system with the aim of increasing,within people,the self-awareness of their own functional *** particular,we focus on the three modules extending the HeLis ontology aiming to represent(i)enablers and(ii)barriers playing potential roles in improving(or deteriorating)own functional status and(iii)arguments driving the FSI collection ***,we show how these modules have been instantiated into real-world scenarios.

Mycorrhizal synthesis between Pisolithus arhizus and adult clones of Arbutus unedo in vitro and in nursery

Arbutoid mycorrhizae were synthesized between adult se- lected clones of Arbutus unedo L. and Pisolithus arhizus. Two micro- propagated clones were tested： ALl, in vitro and c1 （acclimatized plants） in nursery and later in a field trial. In vitro, rooted shoots were trans- ferred to test tubes containing the substrate previously inoculated with mycelium cultured on agar. In the nursery, two inoculation treatments were tested （vegetative inocula or dry sporocarps） and compared to con- trol plants. In the field trial, plants from nursery inoculation treatments were compared and an additional control treatment using seedlings was implemented. Plant height was evaluated 4 months later in the nursery and 20 months later in the field trial.

Regional rural transformation and its association with household income and poverty incidence in Indonesia in the last two decades

Increasing rural household income and reducing poverty rank among Indonesia’s top development *** rural transformation is one strategic policy framework to achieve these *** the last three decades,agricultural production has shifted from low-value food crops to high-value commodities,such as horticulture,estate crops,and *** studies have analyzed rural transformation in Indonesia at the national level,but information on the magnitudes of impact across regions remains *** study aims to analyze the changes in rural transformation at a regional level in the past two *** research utilizes secondary data from Statistics Indonesia(BPS),covering 34 provinces from 2000 to 2020,analyzed using descriptive and panel data regression *** results show an increasing trend in the share of high-value agriculture(RT_(1))and rural non-farm employment(RT_(2)).Both RT_(1)and RT_(2)are positively associated with the growth of rural household income and a lower poverty ***,the speed of structural transformation(ST),RT_(1),RT_(2),rural income growth,and poverty reduction vary across *** research implies that improving rural income and reducing poverty should be done by integrating policies,i.e.,promoting highvalue agriculture and expanding rural non-farm *** attention should also be given to provinces with slow growth in ST,RT_(1),RT_(2),and rural household income.

Growth, Proximate composition and Pigment Production of Tetraselmis chuii cultured with Aquaculture Wastewater

Microalgae are cultured commercially as healthy food, cosmetic products, food preservatives, and a source of valuable compounds. However, the high cost of commercial culture medium is one of the challenges to microalgal production. Therefore, it is essential to find an alternative cost-effective culture medium. Aquaculture wastewater is considered as a highly potential candidate due to its high nutrient content and large quantity generated from the rapid growth of aquaculture sector. In this study, Tetraselmis chuii cultured in different media with or without wastewater was evaluated for its growth, proximate composition and carotenoid production. The results showed that significantly(P cells mL^(-1)) and protein(56.4% dry weight), lipid(44% dry weight) and carbohydrate(20% of dry weight) contents were found in T. chuii when they were cultured in the combination of both wastewater and conway(wastewater + conway) medium. However, carotenoid production of T. chuii was significantly increased(P cultured in wastewater only, followed by conway + wastewater and conway medium only. Therefore, the incorporation of wastewater with commercial medium convey is recommended for a cost-effective microalgae culture, as well as for the enhancement of growth and nutritional content of microalgae.
