We consider two DNA sequences and compare both sequences. One of the crucial issues in bioinformatics is to measure the similarity of two DNA sequences. To this purpose one has to consider different alignments between both sequences. The number of alignments grows very rapidly with the length of the sequences. In this paper we give exact, explicit and computable formulas for the number of different possible alignments and for some classes of reduced alignments. We provide a new insight into the theory of DNA sequence alignment.

Effect of ceria surface facet on stability and reactivity of isolated platinum atoms

Well-defined surface structures and uniformity are key factors in exploring structure–activity relationships in heterogeneous catalysts.A modified atomic layer deposition method and three well-defined ceO_(2) nanoshapes,octahedra with(111)surfaces,cubes exposing(100)facets,and rods with(100)and(110)surface facet terminations,were utilized to synthesize ultra-low loading Pt/ceO_(2) catalysts and allow investigations on the influence of ceria surface facet on isolated Pt species under reducing conditions.A mild reduction temperature(150℃)reduces the initial platinum ions present on the surfaces of the ceria support but preserves the isolated Pt atoms on all ceria surface *** contrast,a reduction temperature of 350°c,reveals very different interactions between the initial single Pt atoms and the various ceria surface facets,leading to dissimilar and nonuniform Pt ensembles on the three ceria *** isolate facet dependent Pt–ceO_(2) interactions and avoid variations between Pt species,the Pt1/ceO_(2) catalysts after reduction at 150°c were subjected to cO oxidation *** isolated Pt atoms on the ceO_(2) octahedra and cubes are less active in the cO oxidation reaction,compared with Pt on ceO_(2) *** the case of Pt on the ceO_(2) octahedra this is due to strongly bound cO blocking active sites together with a stable ceO_(2)(111)surface limiting the oxygen supply from the *** the ceO_(2) cubes,some Pt is not available for reaction and cO is bound strongly on the available Pt *** addition,the Pt catalysts supported on the ceO_(2) cubes are not stable with time on *** isolated Pt atoms on the ceO_(2) rods are considerably more active under these conditions and this is due to a weaker Pt–cO bond strength and more facile reverse oxygen spillover from the defect-rich(110)surfaces of the rods due to the lower energy of oxygen vacancy formation on this ceO_(2) *** Pt supported on the ceO_(2) rods is also remarkably stable with t

Anemia is a frequent finding in most diseases which cause malabsorption. The most frequent etiology is the combination of iron and vitamin B12 deficiency. celiac disease is frequently diagnosed in patients referred for evaluation of iron deficiency anemia (IDA), being reported in 1.8%-14.6% of patients. Therefore, duodenal biopsies should be taken during endoscopy if no obvious cause of iron defi ciency (ID) can be found. cobalamin defi ciency occurs frequently among elderly patients, but it is often unrecognized because the clinical manifestations are subtle; it is caused primarily by food-cobalamin malabsorption and pernicious anemia. The classic treatment of cobalamin deficiency has been parenteral administration of the vitamin. Recent data suggest that alternative routes of cobalamin administration (oral and nasal) may be useful in some cases. Anemia is a frequent complication of gastrectomy, and has been often described after bariatric surgery. It has been shown that banding procedures which maintain digestive continuity with the antrum and duodenum are associated with low rates of ID. Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection may be considered as a risk factor for IDA, mainly in groups with high demands for iron, such as some children and adolescents. Further controlled trials are needed before making solid recommendations about H pylori eradication in these cases.

Glutamine and glutamate supplementation raise milk glutamine concentrations in lactating gilts

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in milk, and lactation is associated with increased glutamine utilization both for milk synthesis and as a fuel for the enlarged small intestine. A number of recent studies have indicated that lactation is accompanied by a mild catabolic state in which skeletal muscle proteins are degraded to provide amino acids that are used to synthesize additional glutamine. In this study we tested the hypothesis that supplemental L-glutamine or the commercially available glutamine supplement Aminogut （2.5% by weight mixed into daily feed） provided to gilts from 30 days prior to parturition until 21 days post-parturition would prevent a decrease in skeletal muscle glutamine while increasing the glutamine content of the milk. Muscle glutamine content decreased （P 〈 0.05） in control animals during lactation but this was prevented by supplementation with either L-glutamine or Aminogut. In this study, neither lactation nor supplementation had any effect on plasma glutamine or glutamate content. Free glutamine, and the total glutamine plus glutamate concentrations in milk from the control and the Aminogut group rose （P 〈 0.05） during the first 7 days of lactation, with milk concentrations in the L-glutamine supplemented group showing a similar trend （P = 0.053）. Milk glutamate remained constant between day 7 and 21 of lactation in the control and L-glutamine supplemented groups, but by day 21 of lactation the free glutamine, glutamate, and glutamine plus glutamate concentrations in milk from Aminogut-treated gilts were higher than those of control gilts. Thus dietary glutamine supplementation can alleviate the fall in intramuscular glutamine content during lactation in gilts, and may alleviate some of the catabolic effects of lactation. Furthermore, the increased milk glutamine content in the supplemented gilts may provide optimum nutrition for piglet development.

Background: Epidemiologic research to learn the incidence, type, location, and severity of female soccer injuries and the risk factors for sustaining a sport injury is the first step in developing preventive policies. The aim of this study was to analyze the incidence of injuries in the population of female soccer players in ***: The injuries incurred by 25,397 female soccer players were registered by the medical staff of the Spanish Football Federation during 1 season. A standardized medical questionnaire was used to classify the injury according to type, severity, location, and injury mechanism. A total of 2108 injuries was reported with an incidence of 0.083 injuries per player per season. Most injuries were in the lower limbs(74.0%), mainly affecting knee(30.4%) and ankle joints(17.9%).Results: The proportion of injuries derived from contact with another player was higher during matches(33.7%) than during training(11.4%;p contact injuries were classified as severe more frequently than were contact injuries(51.0% vs. 42.6%; p cidence of injury was found in adult soccer players(≥18 years) vs. their counterparts younger than 18 years(0.094 vs. 0.072 injuries per player per year, respectively; p ces between age groups in any other injury variable(e.g., type, mechanism, location, or severity; p > 0.05).conclusion: Most female soccer injuries were located at the knee and ankle; the injury mechanism determined the playing time lost; and the player's age did not affect injury characteristics.

Genetic characterization of species using phylogeographic approaches represents a basic reference to understand their evolutionary history as well as to identify conservation priorities to protect areas of particular interest regarding evolutionary *** in well-studied regions such information is lacking for the majority of species,including many endemic species with reduced distribution *** investigate the phylogeographic pattern of the Iberian frog Rana iberica,an endemic amphibian restricted to central and North-Western Iberian *** mitochondrial sequences,we reconstruct the phylogeographic history of the species to test the effect of Quaternary climate changes on the evolutionary diversification of lineages,that is,the differentiation of mitochondrial lineages and the formation of genetic diversity melting pots,and integrate phylogeographic evidence for future conservation *** results indicate the existence of 3 main mitochondrial lineages differentiated during the Upper *** historical demographic analyses and climatic niche modeling show a strong effect of glacial climate changes,suggesting recurrent range contractions and *** such circumstances,differentiation took place most likely by isolation in allopatric interglacial *** lineage admixture in northern Portugal generated a broad mixed zone with highest nucleotide *** its particular evolutionary potential,its reduced distribution and eventual threats under current climate change scenario,conservation priorities should focus on the isolated lineage from Sierra de Guadalupe.
