Originally identified as allelochemicals involved in plant-parasite interactions, more recently, strigolactones （sLs） have been shown to play multiple key roles in the rhizosphere communication between plants and mycorrhizal fungi. Even more recent is the hormonal role ascribed to sLs which broadens the biological impact of these relatively simple molecules. in spite of the crucial and multifaceted biological role of sLs, there are no data on the receptor（s） which bind（s） such active molecules, neither in the producing plants nor in parasitic weeds or AM fungi. information about the putative receptor of sLs can be gathered by means of structural, molecular, and genetic approaches. Our contribution on this topic is the design and synthesis of fluorescent labeled sL analogs to be used as probes for the detection in vivo of the receptor（s）. Knowledge of the putative receptor structure will boost the research on analogs of the natural substrates as required for agricultural applications.

This paper aims at presenting different pumped-storage solutions for improving the energy efficiency and economic sustainability of water systems. The assessment of pumped-storage solutions, either using fresh water or sea-water, is seen as a viable option to solve problems of energy production, as well as in the integration of intermittent renewable energies, providing system flexibility due to energy loads’ fluctuation, as long as the storage of energy from intermittent sources. Pumped-storage is one of the best and most efficient options in terms of renewable resources as an integrated solution allowing the improvement of the energy system elasticity and the global system efficiency. Two real case studies are presented: a fresh water system installed in a river dams—the Alqueva system, in Portugal—and a sea-water system in an arid region of the Cape Verde islands in Africa. These cases demonstrate the benefits associated to pumped-storage solutions, depending on the storage volume capacity, operational rules and energy tariffs.

Anabolic steroid-induced cardiomyopathy underlying acute liver failure in a young bodybuilder

Heart failure may lead to subclinical circulatory disturbances and remain an unrecognized cause of ischemic liver injury. We present the case of a previously healthy 40-year-old bodybuilder, referred to our intensive-Care Unit of Hepatology for treatment of severe acute liver failure, with the suspicion of toxic hepatitis associated with anabolic steroid abuse. Despite the absence of symptoms and signs of congestive heart failure at admission, an anabolic steroid-induced dilated cardiomyopathy with a large thrombus in both ventricles was found to be the underlying cause of the liver injury. Treatment for the initially unrecognized heart failure rapidly restored liver function to normal. To our knowledge, this is the f irst reported case of severe acute liver failure due to an unrecognized anabolic steroid-induced cardiomyopathy. Awareness of this unique presentation will allow for prompt treatment of this potentially fatal cause of liver failure.

Background:There are few data regarding endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)usefulness in children and *** reviewed the long-term experience with diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP in a tertiary single center in southern ***:A retrospective chart review of patients aged 0-18 years who had undergone ERCPs from January 2000 to June 2012 was *** on demographics,indications,diagnosis,treatments,and complications were ***:seventy-five ERCPs were performed in 60 *** median age of the patients at the procedure was 13.9 years(range:1.2-17.9).Of the 60 patients,47(78.3%)were *** all ERCPs,48(64.0%)were performed in patients above 10 years and 35(72.9%)of them were in *** was indicated for patients with bile duct obstruction(49.3%),sclerosing cholangitis(18.7%),post-surgery complication(12%),biliary stent(10.7%),choledochal cyst(5.3%),and pancreatitis(4%).The complication rate of ERCP was 9.7%involving mild bleeding,pancreatitis and *** who had therapeutic procedures were older(13.7±3.9 vs.9.9±4.9 years;P=0.001)and had more extrahepatic biliary abnormalities(82%vs.50%;P=0.015)than those who had diagnostic ERCPs.A marked change in the indications of ERCPs was found,i.e.,from 2001 to 2004,indications were more diagnostic and from 2005 therapeutic procedures were ***:Diagnostic ERCPs are being replaced by magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography and also by endoscopic *** these procedures are complementary and ERCP still has a role for therapeutic purposes.

species and hybrids of Eucalyptus are the world＇s most widely planted hardwood trees. They are cultivated across a wide range of latitudes and therefore environmen- tal conditions. in this context, comprehensive metabolo- mics approaches have been used to assess how different temperature regimes may affect the metabolism of three species of Eucalyptus, E. dunnii, E. grandis and E. pellita. Young plants were grown for 53 d in the greenhouse and then transferred to growth chambers at 10℃, 20℃ or 30℃ for another 7 d. in all three species the leaf chlorophyll content was positively correlated to temperature, and in E. pellita the highest temperature also resulted in a significant increase in stem biomass. Comprehensive metabolomics was performed using untargeted gas chromatography mass spectrometry （GC-Ms） and liquid chromatography （LC）-Ms. This approach enabled the comparison of the relative abundance of 88 polar primary metabolites from GC-Ms and 625 semi-polar secondary metabolites from LC-Ms. Using principal components analysis, a major effect of tempera- ture was observed in each species which was larger than that resulting from the genetic background. Compounds mostly affected by temperature treatment were subsequently selected using partial least squares discriminant analysis and were further identified. These putative annotations indicated that soluble sugars and several polyphenols, including tannins, triterpenes and alkaloids were mostly influenced.

The article deals with the relationship between the decision to invest and the exchange rate. The literature relates investment at interest rate. An increase in the interest rate would reduce the investment expenditure. Jorgenson’s equation uses the flexible accelerator model, taxation, and the cost of capital to explain and predict the amount of investment in machinery and equipment. The relationship between the exchange rate and the investment appears in the literature as a direct relation. An appreciated exchange rate allows the importation of cheaper machinery and equipment and increases productive investments. This paper proposes a modified equation in which the appreciated exchange rate inhibits productive investments by reducing the expectation of profit, either because the domestic market becomes more competitive or because exports decrease. it still incorporates in the model of Jorgenson the idea that the unit cost of labor is the relevant variable to explain the choice of investing, assuming a function of production of fixed coefficients.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GisT) are an uncommon group of tumors of mesenchymal origin. GisT of the anal canal is extremely rare. At present, only 10 cases of c-kit positive anal GisT have been reported in the literature. There is no widely accepted treatment approach for this neoplasia. Literature is sparse on imaging evaluation of anal canal GisT, usually described as a lesion in the intersphincteric space. We describe the case of a 73-year-old man with a mass in the anal canal, and no other symptoms. Endoanal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging showed a well circumscribed solid nodule in the intersphincteric space. The patient was treated by local excision. Gross pathological examination showed a 7 cm × 3.5 cm × 3 cm mass, and histological examination showed a proliferation of spindle cells, with prominent nuclear palisading. The mitotic count was of 12 mitoses/50 HPF. The tumor was positive for KiT protein, CD34 and vimentin in the majority of cells, and negative for desmin and s100. A diagnosis of GisT, with high risk aggressive behavior was made. An abdomino-perineal resection was discussed, but refused. The follow-up included clinical evaluation and anal ultrasound. After 5 years the patient is well, with maintained continence and no evidence of local recurrence.
