Bone morphogenetic protein-2 gene controls tooth root development in coordination with formation of the periodontium

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD) are currently treated with pneumatic retinopexy,scleral buckling surgery(SBS) or primary pars plana vitrectomy(PPV).Worldwide,there is a definite trends towards PPV,which now seems to be the most popular treatment method and is used in 75 to 100% of cases in re- cently published *** main reason for the popularity of PPV is the better visibility and easier management of more challenging cases of ***,however,is also associated with a significant complication rate(cataract in phakie patients,PVR and redetach- ments) and some authorities argue that the current trend towards PPV will worsen the anatomical and functional outcome of the sur- gical treatment of *** retrospective and few prospective studies comparing SBS and PPV have been published;however, none has found a significant difference in the results.

Formation of the periodontium begins following onset of tooth-root formation in a coordinated manner after birth. Dental follicle progenitor cells are thought to form the cementum, alveolar bone and Sharpey＇s fibers of the periodontal ligament （PDL）. However, little is known about the regulatory morphogens that control differentiation and function of these progenitor cells, as well as the progenitor cells involved in crown and root formation. We investigated the role of bone morphogenetic protein-2 （Bmp2） in these processes by the conditional removal of the Bmp2 gene using the Sp7-Cre-EGFP mouse model. Sp7-Cre-EGFP first becomes active at E18 in the first molar, with robust Cre activity at postnatal day 0 （PO）, followed by Cre activity in the second molar, which occurs after P0. There is robust Cre activity in the periodontium and third molars by 2 weeks of age. When the Bmp2gene is removed from Sp7＋（Osterix＋） cells, major defects are noted in root, cellular cementum and periodontium formation. First, there are major cell autonomous defects in root-odontoblast terminal differentiation. Second, there are major alterations in formation of the PDLs and cellular cementum, correlated with decreased nuclear factor IC （Nfic）, periostin and α-SMA＋ cells. Third, there is a failure to produce vascular endothelial growth factor A （VEGF-A） in the periodontium and the pulp leading to decreased formation of the microvascular and associated candidate stem cells in the Bmp2-cKOsp7-cre＇EGFe. Fourth, ameloblast function and enamel formation are indirectly altered in the Bmp2-cKOsp7-cre＇EGFe. These data demonstrate that the Bmp2 gene has complex roles in postnatal tooth development and periodontium formation.

The influence of co-catalyst triethylaluminium (TEAL) concentration on polymerization rate for standard Ziegler-Natta catalyst systems has been studied. By applying the simple polymerization rate model it is found that the co-catalyst concentration can be positively correlated with the number of active centers C*. This finding is confirmed by the fact that a deactivated catalyst can be reactivated by additional co-catalyst injection. It also is shown that co-catalyst concentration mmol·dm-3 should be used in ethene slurry polymerisation to qualify the behavior of Ziegler-Natta catalysts and not the commonly used co-catalyst/catalyst (Al/Ti) molar ratio.

A glaciomarine succession of Neoproterozoic age (between 748～584 Ma) is widespread on the Yangtze Platform, South China. The deposition took place during an intermediate to low paleolatitude position of the Yangtze Platform. The Snowball Earth hypothesis offers an explanation for the occurrence of low-latitude tillites in general. It is based on records obtained of deposits underlying and overlying the tillites. In contrast, we focused on the tillites themselves by using geochemistry to obtain detailed information about the conditions during the glaciation. Of particular interest are environmental conditions, which are closely related to the climate development. Additionally, stable isotope geochemistry was used for a paleoclimate interpretation. The geochemical results of the Sinian glacial succession on the Yangtze Platform are compared to the predictions made by the Snowball Earth hypothesis.

Numerous virulent and widespread diseases are related to water. The transmission and outbreak of water-related diseases are closely coupled to their hydrological environment. Changes in this environment and the associated hydrological processes may affect the occurrence and virulence of water-related diseases. Environmental changes can be manifold, including e.g. climate and land use, agricultural management or urbanization. Water fluxes and storages play a dominant role in describing disease outbreak, transmission and transport. New land cover types often alter landscape scale water storages. If the effects of changes could be better understood, predictions about the distribution, emergence or outbreak of water-related diseases would be possible. Furthermore, the collaboration of experts from different disciplines is essential for accurate spatial and temporal prediction of water-related disease outbreaks. Here we review the current state of knowledge of water-related diseases and present a general classification of these diseases, followed by a discussion of their major drivers. This review focuses particularly on hydrologists and how they can contribute with their understanding of hydrological processes.
