Sediment generation and soil mound denudation in areas of high-density tree throw along a river valley in the Jura Mountains, Switzerland

A preliminary field-based investigation was undertaken in a small(<10 km^(2))river valley located in the mountainous Jura region of northwest *** aims of the work were to assess sediment generation and annual sediment transport rates by tree throw on forested hillslopes,and to document surface hydrology characteristics on four fresh soil mounds associated with recent tree throws over a 24-day monitoring *** the soil mounds,average sediment recovery ranged from 7.7-28.2 g(dry weight),equivalent to a suspended sediment concentration of 145.2-327.8 g L^(-1),and runoff coefficients ranged from 1.0%-4.2%.Based on a soil bulk density value of 1,044 kg m^(-3),upslope runoff generation areas were denuded by an average 0.14 mm by the end of the 24-day monitoring period,representing an erosion rate equivalent to 2.1 mm yr^(-1).A ca.50 cm high soil mound could therefore feasibly persist for around 200-250 *** tree throw work,the dimensions of 215 individual tree throws were measured and their locations mapped in 12 separate locations along the river valley representing a cumulative area equivalent to 5.3 ha(***,43 per ha).Tree throws generated a total of 20.1 m^(3) of fine-sediment(<2 mm diameter),or the equivalent of 3.8×10^(-4) m^(3) m^(-2).The process of tree throw was originally attributed to two extreme weather events that occurred in west and central Europe in late December *** the 18-year period since both storms,this represents an annual sediment transport rate of 2.7×10^(-5) m^(3) m^(-1) yr^(-1).Exploring the relationship with wind on fall direction,65.5%of tree throws(143)generally fell in a downslope direction irrespective of hillslope aspect on which they were *** infers that individual storms may not have been responsible for the majority of tree throws,but instead,could be associated with root *** the high density of tree throws and their relative maturity(average age 41 years),we hypothesise that once tr

Preparation and Luminescent Properties of Eu 3+ Doped Calcium Phosphate Nanocrystalline

The nanocrystalline Eu^3＋ doped calcium phosphate was prepared by calcining precursors, which were got by precipitation method combined with ultrasound treatment and some polysaccharide. The existence of Eu^3＋ inhibited the reaction of Na^＋ ion and SO4^2- radical with apatite and resulted in the transformation of HAP to β- TCP by replacing the calcium ions. The strongest excitation peak was at 393 nm, and other lower peaks were at 361 nm, 375 nm, 381 nm, 418nm. The strongest emission spectrum appeared at about 618nm. The emission peak （579 nm） showed that Eu^3＋ ions distributed on Ca^2＋ sites of the apatitic structure.

Adaptive stray-light compensation in dynamic multi-projection mapping

Projection-based mixed reality is an effective tool to create immersive visualizations on real-world objects. Its wide range of applications includes art installations, education, stage shows, and advertising. In this work, we enhance a multi-projector system for dynamic projection mapping by handling various physical stray-light effects: interreflection,projector black-level, and environmental light in real time for dynamic scenes. We show how all these effects can be efficiently simulated and accounted for at runtime, resulting in significantly improved projection mapping results. By adding a global optimization step,we can further increase the dynamic range of the projection.

A novel deadline and budget constrained scheduling heuristics for computational grids

The conventional deadline and budget constrained （DBC） scheduling heuristics for economic-based computational grids does not take the inconsistency of grid heterogeneity into account, which can lead to decline of application completion ratios. Motivated by this fact, a novel DI3C scheduling heuristics was proposed to deal with sequential workflow applications. In order to valuate the inconsistency, the relative cost （RC） metric was introduced, which was used to indicate the task-starving degree for resources. The new algorithm assigns tasks to resources, considering completion time, budget and RC together. The GridSim toolkit and the benchmark suites of the standard performance evaluation corporation （SPEC） were used to simulate the heterogeneous grid environment and applications. The experimental results show that the task and workflow completion ratios of the new heuristics are higher than those of the conventional heuristics.

Reaction zone characterization of counter-flow diffusion flame with diluted and preheated reactants

Reaction zone characteristics were studied using hydroxy radical planar laser-induced fluorescence （OH-PLIF） technique for a counter-flow preheated （CH4＋N2）/（Air＋N2） diluted diffusion flames. The effects of preheat temperature and dilute ratio on the reaction zone characteristics were investigated by demonstrating the OH intensity distribution and reaction zone thickness from OH-PLIF images. Under the experimental conditions of constant cold flow velocity, the results show that the OH intensity and reaction zone thickness decrease with the increase of dilute ratio at constant preheat temperature and increase with preheat temperature at fixed dilute ratio. The OH maximum intensity shifts towards the ＂lean＂ side of counter flow at constant preheat temperature, and it shifts towards the fuel side with the increase of dilute ratio of fuel stream and towards the oxidizer side with the increase of dilute ratio of oxidizer stream respectively. The feasibility of OH as a reaction zone marker in this diluted combustion is verified further. The variation of diffusion and chemical reaction rate of reactants due to preheat and dilution contributes to the reaction zone characteristics simultaneously. The effect of strain on the flame reaction zone should be included in the future work.

Size Depending Separation of HAP:Eu Nanoparticles in Dispersed Sol

The panicle size has a strong impact on the interactions between nanoparticles and cells. However, the synthesis process of nanoparticles limits the range of achievable average panicle sizes. When biocompatible hydroxyapatite nanoparticles （HAP） are doped with the luminescent rare earth elemeat Europium （Eu）, the panicle size becomes larger compared to pure HAP. Hence, a panicle size reduction is necessary to achieve similar experimental conditions when stbstituting pure HAP with luminescent HAP ： Eu nanoparticles to investigate particlecell-interactions in cell culture experiments. While the sedimentation process of particles in liquids and gels has been well described in literature, the separation of particles in dispersed colloids has not been studied, yet. In this study, the size depending separation and particle size redaction of a homogeneous dispersed nanoparticle sol by gravity and centrifugation were investigated. As the results showed, shorter time of centrifugation at higher speed can reduce the average particle size compared to the decline of the panicle concentation in the upper sol layer most efficiently. This ceatrifugation method has some similarity to the overspeeding technique which is commonly used to lower the transient time to reach the equilibrium of sedimentation.

Python Supervised Co-simulation for a Day-long Harmonic Evaluation of EV Charging

To accurately simulate electric vehicle DC fast chargers'(DCFCs')harmonic emission,a small time step,i.e.,typically smaller than 10μs,is required owing to switching ***,in practice,harmonics should be continuously assessed with a long duration,e.g.,a day.A trade-off between accuracy and time efficiency thus *** address this issue,a multi-time scale modeling framework of fast-charging stations(FCSs)is *** the presented framework,the DCFCs'input impedance and harmonic current emission in the ideal grid condition,that is,zero grid impedance and no background harmonic voltage,are obtained based on a converter switching model with a small timescale *** a DCFC's input impedance and harmonic current source are functions of the DCFC's load,the input impedance and harmonic emission at different loads are ***,they are used in the fast-charging charging station modeling,where the DCFCs are simplified as Norton equivalent *** the station level simulation,a large time step,i.e.,one minute,is used because the DCFCs'operating power can be assumed as a constant over a *** this co-simulation,the FCSs'long-term power quality performance can be assessed time-efficiently,without losing much accuracy.

Coordination Control of Power Flow Controller and Hybrid DC Circuit Breaker in MVDC Distribution Networks
